I thought the militias were pretty uniformly armed with surplus Russian Mosins except for the ones they trust who get FALs, M4s and AKs and wear camouflage whereas the the ones they don't trust wear Khaki uniforms.

It's all over the place, because there's also "collectivos" which are literally government- sanctioned street gangs which are armed with everything from shitty handguns to hunting rifles to break open shotguns.

National Militias differ wildly, some have olive drab, some have jungle green, the most common is the khaki with orange helmets. Arms range from Mosins to AR-15s to FALs to AKMs to AK-103s to AK-47s. It's a total shitshow. They've literally emptied out every one of their stockpiles. If the government had a gun, literally any gun, it's been given to some dubiously sanctioned paramilitary group.

The most likely ending to this little standoff is Maduro pillaging what little is left of Venezuela's wealth and fleeing to Mexico or Turkey.

I don't think Maduro can even do that.

The Cartels will be looking for Maduro's money in Mexico, and you know that he'll be scared of Mossad snatch squads in Turkey.

I bet that when/if Maduro leaves, Venezuelans will vote in another leftie populist who will maintain the shitholeness of the country. That's the mindset of most of 3rd world people: as long as government gives some 'welfare' crumbs to their household, they don't care if everything around them is on fire.
And that's why most of 3rd world nations will keep in a vicious circle of underdevelopment. (I can't think of an exception, but probably there is).

In Spanish America the issue can be traced back to the monarchy. At one point in time, they were run fairly well, had a system of checks and balances, and were meritocratic. However, when the crown needed funds to put down various Protestant revolts (like in the Netherlands), they ended up selling off positions to increase their treasury. They also did away with anticorruption policies. Ultimately, this thirst for additional funds created a political culture of corruption that still haunts the region to this day.

(There are other factors too, but I don’t want to do a tl;dr).

I know I'm probably late but if China or Russia try to make a move Orange Man could use the Monroe Doctrine as justification keep them out

Part of the issue with the region is that China is buying less natural resources. Their decreased demand has hurt some countries -like Venezuela- more than others. Russia isn’t as interested in the region as they once were, but the Spanish have actually made some inroads, especially in Cuba.

If I were Maduro, I would wait for the worst possible moment to get up and leave unannounced to flee to another country as I watch & laugh from my airplane Jacuzzi at the dilapidated country I just left to implode like a black hole with a special bottle of champagne by my side to celebrate the total and absolute vacuous collapse of a functional country, I would also leave behind my yes-men to continue serving out my executive orders to ensure that the country never recovers by having those still blindly loyal to me continue pushing the trajectory of failure on nothing more than the empty promise that I'll be back next week, only to continue promising to come back next week every week on the week until Venezuela becomes Somalia 2 Electric Boogaloo. I would then change my identity and get plastic surgery so nobody could find me & I could start the imminent collapse of yet another country all over again.

Well of course they'd support them... imagine my shock.

Never trust a Chinaman. The statement from Beijing is more akin to a certain Willy Wonka moment.

More like a pimp seeing his hooker getting arrested. That bitch owes me money and where she gonna get it from now? Venezuela owes China quite a bit of money, China has been propping them up with loans ever since they've started having money problems. If it wasn't for that, you'd probably hear something between a yawn and silence from them as they gaze their navel over this.

Excellent quote. I must admit, for all my fucketry, I leaned more about how to view the world and respect the human in another from Orwell and no other. No-one I've ever met has been as much of a guiding light.

It fucks me right off when I see someone misuse Orwell's name and voice for a nonsnse poinmt, which happened several times today. Good quote!

Yup. Most left wing English intellectuals in the 1930's were absolutely appalling people but I've always liked Orwell. From the same 'Notes on Nationalism'.

"5) The News Chronicle advised its readers to visit the news film at which the entire execution could be witnessed, with close-ups. The Star published with seeming approval photographs of nearly naked female collaborationists being baited by the Paris mob. These photographs had a marked resemblance to the Nazi photographs of Jews being baited by the Berlin mob. [back]"

And of course now when you see those pictures it's hard not to feel a bit sorry for the women being baited who were probably only guilty of hanging out in bars with Germans - the country was starving, the Germans had food and all the women had going for them was youthful good looks. Particularly as some of people doing the baiting were no doubt troll shielding - they knew they had probably made a few compromises with the occupiers themselves that were a lot worse than letting the Germans buy them stuff but by joining in the mob they hoped to evade the same treatment. What a bunch of hypocritical assholes.

[turns to camera, stares into it and pauses]

Of course long after WWII you had films like Black Book that covered exactly this phenomena. Still Orwell wrote that 1945 when calling out the baiting would probably get you accused of being a Nazi sympathiser.

LOL. Jeremy Hunt has finally figured out that by siding against Maduro he'll be on the same side as the US, EU, most of South America and everyone but the Corbynites. And on the opposite side to Russia, China and Jeremy Corbyn.

It only took him about 24 hours to work this out. Truly a political visionary. No doubt he'll run for Tory leader if the Tories every actually have a proper competitive leadership election.

Chile sadly is coming back into bananerism, the right over here is full of old idiots desperate for approval of any kind, and the left is getting more and more popular between the younger population, our president is cucking out my country and we even have our own AOC equivalent doing stupid shit in Congress.

Only 25+ years old should have the right to vote. Young people are immature, inexperienced and are prone to believe in this socialist-progressive-left dream word bullshit. At least most of them get over this phase.

You can actually generate a majority for either party by restricting the franchise -

E.g. Men vs Women, Young vs Old, Rich vs Poor, Religious vs non Religious, Military vs non Military, Urban vs Rural and so on -

I'm sure the Democrats long term plan is amnesty for illegals which would make it very hard for the GOP to ever win.

Still I'm not convinced the GOP should come up with some sort of mirror image Cunning Plan to get themselves a permanent majority.

I'm really hoping for a Ceausescu-style myself:

The problem is that if you have a violent revolution it's pretty easy to hijack. As arguably Illescu tried to do in Romania. Sure it was satisfying to see Ceausescu get what he deserved, but I'm not convinced it wouldn't have been better to put him on trial and let him incriminate people like Illescu and stop them from playing a major role in politics. Bumping him off was mostly about silencing him and mostly benefited all the commies who wanted to rebrand themselves as social democrats.

Wikileaks is actively defending Maduro right now on Twitter

https://twitter.com/wikileaks

Wikileaks is stating all US presence (the embassies) 72 hours from now would be considered illegal occupations of the country:

Wikileaks is equating Juan Guaido to Nancy Pelosi in terms of interim president legitimacy:

I know some people are being blinded by their hate for Trump. Doesn't mean he is in the wrong here. Maduro has to go.

Do I believe Trump is doing this out of the goodness of his heart? No. But people in Venezuela need this, and getting rid of maduro is something, left and right, should support.

"I like what Trump is doing and believe Maduro is long over due to be removed from power"
and
"The manner he is doing it is worrysome, sets a standard for escalation, and in general, Countries not at war with each other should not be meddling in the other's internal affairs"
and
"We should not get actively involved in Venezuela, or really any other country for that matter, but especially that banana republic."

These are not mutually exclusive thoughts. I DO like Trump telling Maduro to suck it, I DON'T like how he's doing it and think it sets a dangerous precedent. And I generally don't think we should be involved in Venezuela. If they want to have a civil war, they can. Our only involvement should be to keep the fucking monarchies of Europe out of it so they can't get influence into the Americas, as monroe intended.

The problem is that Tin Pot dictator doesn't exist in a vacuum. He has the support of businessmen, other politicans, etc. Just removing the dictator simply replaces the head of the snake. You have to burn out all the rot if you want real change.
