Good thing the puck handles bluetooth nightmares. For some reasons, my bedroom in particular really doesn't like bluetooth and regardless of device (Mice, Deck, Switch, PS5...) often drops out.

I really think $99 is too much, there are controller like the 8bitdo ultimate 2 that have 90% of the features, TMR sticks included, for $60. I dont think the trackpads and the puck is worth it for $40 more. I see a bunch of retards on twitter bringing up the xbox elite controllers and whatever playstation calls their pro controllers as though no one knew those were scams with no actual benefit outside gimmicks.
I've bought an 8bitdo ultimate, and I was disappointed with the back buttons being nearly useless, only being useful for remapping controller buttons.

It's also in a nice spot where it's cheaper than the other "pro" controllers (Xbox Elite and Dualsense Edge), yet offers more for the money. 8 bit do can be used with anything, so it may interest the non-pc-gaming crowd a bit more.

Tempted to buy the new controller because I'm a controller hoarder, but I was burned by valve before. I bought the OG steam controller and found it to be completely worthless unless you're playing games on steam. I find it super annoying having to make everything a non steam game just to use a controller.

Outside of that the controller feels like it's perfect for me. I'll be trying to insta buy if I can on launch.
Same. I prefer the controls on the Steamdeck since that is what I game on 80% of my time. Sometimes I enjoy just sitting on the couch with the deck hooked up to my dock. Since I have a Switch pro controller and Dual Sense controller, I hate how controls are invented on the Switch controller and my dual sense is getting long in the tooth. Will probably buy this since I want dual touchpads.

Something interesting I've found, is this project. It's meant to have steam controllers work for non steam games without needing to use steam input, As per the site SISR works by emulating a controller and it's apparently indistinguishable from real hardware to windows. Linux natively supports the steam controller so no work arounds needed on that front. Might be that the developer will work to make the steam controller (2026 variant) not need steam input.

I might actually consider getting a steam controller just to control my media center from the couch, as my current setup of a logitech bt keyboard/trackpad combo kinda sucks.

How well do the steam deck trackpad(s) work as a general replacement for a mouse or laptop style trackpad? Can the joysticks control the mouse cursor directly?

Fingers crossed the steam frame and gabe cube actually get released at a reasonable price and timeframe. I guess McNigger's hopium has infected me.

I think they missed the spot not putting adaptive triggers like the PS5 in it. I would love to have that feature supported in supported titles with steam input.
Maybe, but not sure how energy intensive those are, and they kept it simple by just matching the Deck instead.

I've bought 3 8bitdo pads and two developed issues either with buttons or sticks. Could be me being unlucky but I don't think I'm the only one who has had issues with 8bitdo quality.

For the steam controller, the trackpads alone go a long way in justifying the price tag. On the steam deck they make a lot of unplayable games feasible with a controller.

You're not alone. I had a 8bitdo controller that had issues. I bought membranes for it after a couple of months, then after two years of use, it developed drift.

I don't trust them anymore.

I'm not a gyro guy and I don't plan on using it but having seen what people get up to with those 2 trackpads in games is insane. from radials, to swipes, to even just using them as basically 2 extra d pads/buttons all seems really appealing to me, and that's not even touching on the 4 back buttons. It being easy to open up is icing on the cake. If SISR can deliver (and it seems like it already does for the steam deck configs) it would be possible to have it emulate a controller with whatever set up you can do with steam input for non steam games like emulators for example (although idk if you can even launch emulators through steam) or games one might have found on the high seas.

You can just add as a non steam game and steam input will work

I think you’d be surprised. Being charitable it may be people who were burned by the shitty off brand controllers from back in the day (e.g. those madcatz controllers from the 2000s) and never updated their beliefs to match the times but given how long it’s been I’d wager it’s moreso the bog standard brand slavishness we see in every domain.

Yup, though that’s because of windows fuckery in the way xinput/dinput was setup. Funnily enough 8bitdo fixed it with the pro3 by adding steam input support.

You can just add as a non steam game and steam input will work
Yeah that makes sense in most cases, but can you do that with emulators? I haven't actually messed around with Steam input ever so i'm totally unaware of everything it can do, I don't think I've ever even added non steam games to steam lol. Speaking of steam input though, having read about it a little and specifically the steam deck and how it works on desktop mode in windows I've read something interesting (if true). The steam deck can have a "desktop" profile and a game profile, or per game profile. If that's the case what stops me from jujst having steam open in the background when I use x emulator or pirated game and just have the desktop profile the same as I would for a game? I don't really care for using it on a couch since all my gaming is done at my desk.

How's that work with pirated games or games from other launchers?
Pirated games MAYBE could be an issue if they are pirated poorly from a steam copy(delete steam app id), but gog games or whatever you just add to steam and they work for steam input. Or even random shit, openxcom extended for example. Its remarkably flexible.

I basically only play pirated games on my steam deck and I've not had any issues. The only one I remember having a problem with was Sekiro not recognising the controller at all if you added it through steam but adding it in Lutris first and then adding a steam shortcut worked for some reason.

I've seen the developer of SISR respond to some comments to clear things up and I found them interesting enough to report back here:
- SISR is designed to have steam open in the background and use steam input to emulate controllers in non steam games, like gamepass games for example, or non steam games using anti cheats; you just need steam open and steam input which can then allow you to have any set up you want with anything that supports steam input, so the steam controller (2026) should be day 1 operable in this framework
- There is the ability to have xinput emulation and use without steam at all, but you're just emulating xinput and therefore have no usage of the gyro and trackpads in the case of really restrictive anti cheats

Honestly that feels like a silver bullet to me. The only games I don't have on steam are either pirated or emulators and rom hacks and if for whatever reason I couldn't add them into steam as non steam games there's this.

I'm excited to try out the steam controller, TBH i'll likely only be using it for 3rd person action games and fromsoft games, that trackpad customization is going to be amazing. I just hope it's ergonomic for my gorilla hands.

The news that Valve received large shipments of controllers was reported on April 13, 2026, and the official release date is May 4, 2026.
There are 21 days between these two dates.
If its the same with the consoles the release date should be around May 21.
