I guess that hotfix didn't work, then.
Oh you bet your ass it didn't. I literally just ran it before I planned on uninstalling just to see if it was still broke. It is. Btw Any specific MMO you would like to see reviewed or just pull it out of my hat?

Surprise me.

And for the mundane, the game's 1.03 update was balancing the cost and performance of an certain rifle, reworking the surrender mechanic, along with ironing out some more problems with people clipping through the game's walls (seriously didn't they test this out, beforehand?).

I'll revive this thread from the initial Valorant feature from the initial Trainwrecks drama (where the Anticheat developer publishes his IP address) posted by @Blackstar. There's a new drama this time and it starts with Valorant patching DMA firmware of SATA/NVMe cheats (archive):

Riot Games ended up posting this tweet saying "congrats to the owners of a brand new $6k paperweight" which caused quite a stir on Twitter because it implies that Riot Games is actively bricking users hardware:

A lot of people started shitting on Riot Games for this. Some come in and defend the tweet by saying cheaters are mad but also some heavily shit on the tweet for actively spying on the Kernel level and still failing to catch cheaters.

Philip clarifies that this isn't bricking computers rather it throws a hardware fault. However, the way this tweet is worded makes it sound way worse. Especially with Philip's smug demeanor, it hasn't helped him like seen with the Trainwrecks drama.

Let's take a look at the quote retweets. This is one of the more popular quote retweets saying "Riot casually gloating that they put a malware that can brick your PC if they feel like it". He also jokes about a "class action lawsuit incoming" as well.

Some more drama such as people understanding the severity of hacking but adding that bricking a users hardware should be illegal. Some people also joke that if you play anything made by Riot Games, you deserve to have your shit bricked.

I also saw this, I don't know if this is true? They're claiming the ring-zero anticheat also forces you to reformat.

When we open that 'influential person' board we absolutely need a thread on that anti-cheat guy.

p.s. I found this thread while looking for this.

That's why I just don't bother playing new multiplayer garbage. Maybe with the exception of Counter Strike 2.

Kernel Anti-Cheats are pretty much a backdoor and behave like an UK anarcho-tyrannic goverment.

Being a devil's advocate, you COULD call their firmware bs a MASSIVE fuck up and not necessarily malicious, and while painful, probably survivable even with a lawsuit....IF...

IF!!!... They took accountability. Joking about it is ABSOLUTELY pr suicide, you'd probably be better off company wise shooting the person who joked about it in the head during a live stream.

This is probably the most mask off shit I've ever seen, that they brick hardware and essentially lol about it.

That alone will definitely boost class action lawsuits as an "oh my God we fucked up we are so fucking sorry" wouldn't prevent it, but would lessen a lawsuits scope.

Double-edged sword.

Woe to Riot for publicly admitting for distributing malware.
Yet, aren't those cards actually super-specialized and there's zero possibility of actually messing up the mass-murder of said cards? Quickly checking up on that in internet:

1779457806120.png

Doesn't look like firmware with a lot of additional, handy purposes for everyday user.

So, basically, affected people knowingly bought specialized firmware and knowingly installed kernel-level anti-cheat with full knowledge that said anti-cheat can detect those cards and said anti-cheat specifically stated that it can do that. Yeah, woe to those guys as well, they even paid for that it seems.

Talks about lawsuits is a massive cope, those who actually can roll into the lawsuit are not so numerous and they probably already break some kind of law regarding misuse of technology for hacking purposes, not sure.

UPD:

Found exact model of the cards from Riot screenshot,

I re-installed this after a few years to play with some zoomers from work, keep getting BSOD with vgk errors during character select. The new heroes (deadlock and after) suck ass and if they’ve added any new maps I haven’t queued into one yet. No one talks in VC and every game is your hard carry smurf vs the other. It’s a wonder anyone still gives this commie trash game money and time

I'm sure this only targeted cheater hardware and in no way will ever fry a legitimate system...

If they're forcing faults along the PCIe bus and it interacts with the NVME in the wrong way, the nvme drive can go into a lockdown/protection mode that only the manufacturer can recover from. There is actual malware that is less harmful than ring 0 anti-cheat.

If i were a Microsoft saar, I would blacklist their anticheat code signing for this. Reminds me of Sony installing Rootkits to keep people from copying music off of a CD

Reminds me a lot of the Better Way Electronics guy that Louis Rossmann dealt with. Exact same smug retard mindset where you can never be wrong because by definition any and all evidence that you're wrong is just evil cheaters/pirates trying to trick you, and anything against those people is justified. You see it in internet moderators too, but usually not to this extent.

I can't believe this bridge bricked my truck. Someone should start a class action lawsuit against this bridge. Who could have known this bridge was gonna brick my truck. Bridge designers should never have the power to brick my truck. etc etc.

I actually find this nuclear option to the cheating problem fascinating. They're hitting the hardware in a way that isn't irrecoverable, but will take you out for at least a day, and that's assuming you know how to do a OS reinstall. Is this overreach? Yes. At the same time, the targets are niggers spending 6k on a cheat device to become the biggest giga nigger in Valorant. It's kinda kino, ngl
