It all depends really.
If they collect action figures/plushes and keep them in their room or just wear a minimalist shirt with the media's logo or something? That's alright, do you man. But if you're walking outside with like, 4+ keychain plushies and showing off your shirt that only "us nerds" would get and shoving your tattoos in everybody's face and sneaking in a character's catchphrase from the show every 6 sentences?
Basically, if they do everything in their power to make a massive point of them doing whatever they do, then they become insufferable.
Nothing wrong with liking a thing (I like Unicorno okay? Fuck Funkos of course.) but don't act like a persecuted minority over it.

For me it always seemed that this "popular people vs nerds/geeks" is exclusively product of American culture (and some Western Europe countries maybe). Times changes. And being interested in something or having a hobby and being passionate about it is a normal thing and in many places in the world was always seen as nothing special. I like animation and know far too much about French cartoons, but never considered myself nerd/geek.

I remember one video Sargon of Akkad responded to in his early days was this one.

Fake geek girls legit ruined cosplay, though. I used to get mad when people said this but it's 100% true. They turned what was a neat geeky craftsmanship hobby into being overrun with camwhores and actual literal whores. Like there was a "cosplay model" who would have autograph booths at cons of her cosplays and you could go on her website and book a session with her at the hotel later. There are probably more than a few like that now, I don't follow it anymore because it's gross and sad.

It might be because I am a dude... but uh, what's the problem here?

As you guys can tell by my username I'm quite a big fan of the software VOCALOID. It's basically software that allows voice synthesis for songs, demos or whatever. Kind of like what they did for SIRI.

I've had a lot of fun and made genuine friendships in the large community of musical creators, artists, etc but I have not seen a community with so much gatekeeping in my life.

I find it a bit disgusting but I still find it understandable. The fandom has both a big overlap with the anime/weeb community because of its Japanese presence and the art style that inhibits the Japanese and Chinese company/VOCALOID characters as well as having to deal with the normal 'nerd' subculture (as you can see with the genuinely hideous funko pops).

It's a fucking mess and it's why when talking about your interests or hobbies it's very hard to bring such a genuinely nerdy/rare thing into conversation as you're going to make people confused (understandable) or have the terrible response of "Oh, you mean like Miku! That anime character!".

this is very heartbreaking, please tell us more

I went on a date recently and told this lady how rude I was to this kid on a BBS back in the day and she didn't care that much. Honestly, still angry about it. Then I told her I was a big deal in FYAD. Well, needless to say we went back to her place and I ate her out but afterwards when I asked if she would reciprocate she kicked me out yawning the whole time saying she had to work early.

Anyways, keep that in mind when shitting on the posters here, buddy.

TBF when you bring up Vocaloid Miku should be the first thing that comes to mind as the software is the most popular to date thanks to Crypton. Even then I don't consider vocaloid to be a nerd thing even when it clashes with weeb shit. @Michel what do you think bud?

I fucking hate talking "nerdy" shit with people, it's annoying and cringy. Just go play your game or whatever and leave me alone. Also don't bypass my weeb-guard friend to tell me your fire cat pokemon is named "shadow after the hedgehog", not shut up about other shit I don't care about, interrupt weeb-guard, and refuse to leave.

They think it's so rare for people to like when it's not, will make a beeline for them and try to cling to them, even if they only have that one little thing in common, like pokemon or whatever. At this point in time you can't use fandoms to make friends because it's so broad.

Am i the only one who find people who are over 15 and use those game/comic/tv show tshirts and collect toys and game related shit as immature and insufferable?.

Sadly they are a dime a dozen in my college, seems the fashion of now is to wear the ugliest most childish clothing and have unkempt hair and beards.

I find people who sperg out about fighting commies to be insufferable and immature.

That pretty much nailed it. It was always wearing bland clothing, pen pouch in shirt pocket, zit cream on face, Vitalis or Brylcreem in hair, glasses, it was just easy to spot when you have those examples.

I dated a girl like this. She based her whole identity around being “geeky,” but most of what she was into was standard shit like Star Wars and X-Men. She was also a fan of Big Bang Theory. Despite being a self-described “geek,” she was condescending as shit to me because I played old-school shooters like Doom and Duke Nukem.

She did, however, play D&D and Warcraft, both of which she tried getting me into, but I didn’t really like either of them.

I've got one of these on my bookshelves. I am not ashamed as the average boy or girl calling themselves nerds or geeks these days probably wouldn't even recognise it.

Also, at the risk of sounding a sexist pig, is it just me or are geek grrrls generally a lot more strident about being so than the boys? I'm sure that there are very sound sociological explanations for this but to me it just feels like geek grrrl is the new lipstick lesbian or girl-who-can-down-a-pint-of-beer-in-five-secomds. A quick, easy way for passably attractive but generally unremarkable women to try to make themselves seem more exciting and interesting.
Yeah i know exactly what you mean
I have this on my shelf and people that CALL themselves geeks or nerds have no idea what it fucking is

I miss the 80s/90s nerd stereotype a lot because it used to be a branding you'd earn by being really really into a particular field. There were woodworking nerds and music nerds and computer nerds and most of them would be more than happy to sperg out about anything in their field of interest if you had questions.

The one saving grace of the modern internet is that there's still a place for these people and a lot of them have found success in making youtube series about whatever their interests are. Being able to learn music theory from a dude who's just super super into it whenever I've got 20 minutes to kill is neat as hell.
