Voting in the US midterm elections is now underway.

UpdatedUpdated 27 September

In this article...
Americans have started to cast their ballots in a vote that could shape the rest of Donald Trump's presidency.

Although the US midterm elections are technically held on 6 November, early voting has already started in a handful of states.

Minnesota was the first state to allow early in-person voting on 21 September, with a handful of key states following, including New Jersey, California and Arizona.

Thirty-five states and the District of Columbia offer some form of early voting, meaning every day until 6 November counts for Democrats and Republicans.

It's been an inauspicious beginning to the voting season for Mr Trump and his Republican Party, which continue to struggle under the weight of near-constant self-imposed crises and chaos.

80 per cent chance of winning back the chamber.

The Senate though is likely to be retained by the Republicans.

According to CNN, the Democrats are defending some two dozen seats, including 10 in states where Mr Trump secured victory in 2016, and five of those where he won resoundingly.

FiveThirtyEight gives the Democrats just a 30 per cent chance of taking the Senate.

The Democrats could also use their numbers to set up House select committees targeting the president.

"They will have an opportunity to set up special panels and committees to essentially smear President Trump," United States Studies Centre research fellow Dougal Robinson told SBS News in April.

Mr Robinson pointed to the Benghazi committee set up by the Republicans against Hillary Clinton in 2014 to further investigate the fatal 2012 terrorist attack on two US government facilities in Libya.

Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Once seen as cruising to an easy vote - fulfilling Mr Trump's key promise to stack the Supreme Court with conservative justices - a string of sexual assault allegations has turned the Kavanaugh decision into all-out political war.

According to CNN's national political reporter Eric Bradner, the scandal and lukewarm response from some Republicans to Mr Kavanaugh's accusers could "drive suburban women away in midterms".

I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 21, 2018
Analysts also point to Robert Mueller's investigation as an ongoing potential source of political curveballs.

Mr Mueller has already indicted more than 30 people in connection with his probe into whether members of Mr Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to help get the real estate tycoon elected.

And speculation has swirled in recent days that Mr Trump may fire embattled deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein - who oversees the Russia collusion probe.

Doubts over how long Mr Rosenstein can keep the job have swirled since shock media reports that he once suggested secretly recording Mr Trump to collect evidence for ousting him under a constitutional amendment for presidents unfit to remain in office.

Mr Rosenstein's firing - and Mr Trump possibly putting someone more pliable in his place - would set off alarm bells over the future independence of a probe, which has the potential to rock both the midterms and the entire Trump presidency.

US wants ‘partnership, not domination’ in Australia and region[/paste:font]

A report co-authored by Mr Robinson predicted after the midterms, Congress would be highly unlikely to support a US re-entry to the Trans-Pacific Partnership - a trade deal between 11 Pacific nations including Australia and New Zealand which Mr Trump pulled the US out of last year.

Another issue that may affect Australia is that if the Democrats retake the House, it is likely to lead to lower defence spending.

How will Trump keep his voter base energized? "More Winning."

TRUMP HAS A TWO WORD RESPONSE WHEN REPORTER ASKS HIM HOW HE WILL KEEP GOP BASE ENERGIZED
5:52 PM 10/10/2018
Benny Johnson | Reporter At Large

President Donald Trump made portions of the White House press corps chuckle with his response on how he intends to keep Republican voters fired up after the ultimately successful confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“How do you keep your base energized now that you have this Kavanaugh victory?” one reporter asked. Tuesday was the first day that Kavanaugh sat on the court after a contentious battle over his nomination.

“More winning,” Trump said.

Trump was leaving the White House on his way to a campaign rally Tuesday night when he took questions from reporters in the White House driveway.

The president was also asked about the mobs of paid progressive protesters that took over Capitol Hill during the contentious debate over Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Trump was specifically asked about the intense “energy” of the protesters.

“A lot of those were paid protesters. You saw that they are all unhappy because they haven’t been paid yet,” Trump alleged about the protesters. (RELATED: Trump Has A Theory Why The Anti-Kavanaugh Protesters Are So Mad)

Trump brought up his new trade deal with Canada and Mexico as a major policy win. “Our deal with Mexico and Canada was fantastic,” Trump said. “China wants to make a deal so badly. We will see where it goes. But I don’t think they are ready.”

MATT DRUDGE WARNS OF MIDTERM BLOODBATH: TRUMP TO LOSE ’60 SEATS IN THE HOUSE LIKE OBAMA DID’
2:41 PM 09/14/2018
Peter Hasson | Reporter

Conservative news giant Matt Drudge on Friday made a somber prediction about Republicans’ chances in the November midterm elections, predicting President Donald Trump will see his party lose 60 seats in the House of Representatives.

Drudge, who runs the influential Drudge Report, compared the upcoming midterms to the electoral bloodbath Democrats suffered in the 2010 midterm elections under former President Barack Obama.

“Trump and Obama both have 47% approval at this time of presidency, according to Rasmussen. Trump will also lose 60 seats in the House like Obama did during first midterm!” Drudge wrote on Twitter. (RELATED: Democrats Should Immediately Abolish ICE After Retaking Congress)

He added cryptically: “Unless…”

Democrats have to gain 23 House seats in November in order to flip the lower chamber. Democrats have an 83 percent chance of retaking the House, according to FiveThirty Eight.

Mark Taylor (The Trump Prophecies): Most Important Midterm Elections In All Of US History
July 30, 2018 29 3159

Mark Taylor says the upcoming 2018 elections are the most important mid-term elections in all of America’s history. Here’s why…

Mark Taylor interviewed by Greg Hunter on USA Watchdog

Mark Taylor, author of the popular book “The Trump Prophecies,” contends, “If you are part of the army of God, you need to be ready also because there are going to be politicians that are going to resign. We have had the biggest number of resignations probably in history. This midterm election is going to be huge. This is going to be a red tsunami. They keep talking about the blue wave. I think it’s going to be a blue drip, a leaky faucet, and that is all they are going to get. You have had more resignations than we have ever seen. Now is the time to go in and capture this ground and hold it for the Kingdom of God. . . . It’s not a left or right thing. God is moving us towards a place of righteousness. That’s what’s happening right now. So, he’s going to be replacing these people. If you are called to be a judge, senator, congressman or a council person, I don’t care what level local, state or federal, take your place and get ready. If you are in the Army of God and you don’t vote, you need to get off your behind and register to vote. These are going to be the most important midterm elections in America’s history—period.”

In closing, Taylor says, “I don’t think there is going to be another Democrat in the White House for a long time, if ever again. I believe you are seeing the death of the Democrat party right now.”

Join Greg Hunter as he goes One-on-One with Mark Taylor, co-author of “The Trump Prophecies,” which has been made into a movie that is releasing in early October.

Just popping in to say that I’m fucking sick of political ads. I watch maybe 30-60 minutes of tv a day while hanging out with my parents and I swear to God there are 15 political ads jammed in that short time frame. Someone tell these crooks to shut the fuck up and improve their own policies instead of scaremongering about other politicians.

so, is there any actual evidence of who mailed these alleged bombs? i see a lot of people saying 'dems did it to make GOP look bad' and others saying 'MAGAbomber' but there doesn't seem to be any evidence for either claim. have there been any statements issued by law enforcement on who did it?

Same with all the attempted poisionings of GOPers recently come to think of it

As far as I'm aware, no, they haven't found whoever did it yet. I'm fairly sure this incident won't affect the midterms much either way though, even if the guy found is a right-winger.

And I understand Cuban are always either homogeneously white Criollos or African black with very little mixture in between, and Ted obviously is descended from the former, so he's for sure way whiter than most Texan mestizo type Hispanics.
Trust me, I'm white!

unfortunately, unless it comes out as a framing by a left-wing nut, i can't envision the event generating negative publicity for the dems. whether it's a lone wolf or one of trump's campaign managers it will generate headlines to get sympathy votes for dems. i hope you're right about it not affecting the midterms much.

How do you mail a pipe bomb sticking out of an envelope and it not get intercepted? Why were there no postmarks on the stamps? What "MAGAbomber" if they exist uses ISIS flags?

The Soros bomb didn't make much news, and the narrative that Khashoggi was murdered because Trump's rhetoric against the mainstream media's fake news hasn't worked. With early voting already showing a major Republican turnout, Democrat false flaggers had to do something! It's the same faggots who openly advocate violence ("You cannot be civil" and "when they go low, you kick them"), refuse to condemn Antifa, and will ruin somebody's life with rape accusations. Call it the ultimate TDS.

Cuz it’s horseshit and our mods are hotpocket cucks for deleting the thread

The CNN and Soro's one were locally dropped off. Never posted through the mail. That's why the stamps in the picture aren't postmarked. Which raises all sorts of more interesting questions. The one obvious one is whoever was involved is NYC local or at least was in the area this week.

Hilariously, if I've been reading this correctly, the one sent to Eric Holder got refused and retrun to sendered to Debbie Wasserman Schultz. That's why she got one. They used her address for the return address.

With cameras covering every inch of Manhattan since 9/11, let's see authorities not find any suspects, let alone release the footage, in at least two weeks. De Blasio, Schumer, Cuomo, and the deep state of the FBI are going to Kavanaugh this as slow as they can.

Also, the police are sperging over union shit at the moment. No surprise...

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were among the targets of suspected package bombs delivered to several high-profile Democrats and CNN, which the FBI said it was investigating as an act of terrorism.

At least eight suspicious parcels were intercepted before reaching any intended recipients, including Obama's attorney general, Eric Holder, former CIA Director John Brennan and prominent Democratic Party donor George Soros.

Two packages were sent to California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the FBI said. Investigators were trying to track down another suspicious parcel they believe was addressed to Obama's vice president, Joe Biden, a federal official told Reuters late on Wednesday.

None of the eight packages detonated, and nobody was hurt. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

But news of the bomb threats heightened tension in a nation deeply polarized ahead of elections on Nov. 6 that will decide whether Democrats take control of one or both houses of Congress from Republicans and deny President Donald Trump the majority his party now holds in both.

Some leading Democrats were quick to accuse Trump himself of stoking the potential for political violence by frequently engaging in hyper-partisan, vitriolic rhetoric.

Trump told a political rally in Wisconsin on Wednesday his government would conduct "an aggressive investigation."

"Any acts or threats of political violence are an attack on our democracy itself," Trump said. "We want all sides to come together in peace and harmony."

But he said the media has a responsibility "to stop the endless hostility and constant negative and oftentimes false attacks and stories."

MANILA ENVELOPES

The first package, which turned up on Monday, was addressed to Soros, the billionaire financier and frequent target of right-wing conspiracy theories.

The parcel intended for Holder ended up rerouted to the return address printed on all the packages - the Florida office of U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who formerly chaired the Democratic National Committee, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The FBI said late on Wednesday it had confirmed that two additional packages, similar in appearance to the others, were addressed to U.S. Representative Waters, a veteran Democratic congresswoman from Los Angeles and also an outspoken Trump critic.

An earlier FBI statement said the other packages consisted of a manila envelope with a bubble-wrap interior containing "potentially destructive devices." Each bore a computer-printed address label and six "Forever" postage stamps.

Other officials said the devices contained in the envelopes were all similar to one found in the mailbox of the Soros home and later detonated by police. At least one bomb was packed with shards of glass, one federal source said.

The U.S. Secret Service intercepted packages addressed to Obama at his Washington home and to Clinton, the 2016 Democratic nominee for president, at her home in New York state.

The CNN bureau in New York received a package addressed to Brennan, who has appeared as an on-air CNN analyst, leading police to evacuate the Time Warner building in a busy Manhattan neighborhood near Central Park. It contained an envelope of white powder that experts were analyzing, Police Commissioner James O'Neill said.

The package to Clinton was found late on Tuesday while the one addressed to Obama was recovered early on Wednesday, both during routine off-site mail screenings, the Secret Service said. Obama and Clinton were not at risk, they said.

"So far the devices have been what appeared to be pipe bombs," John Miller, the New York City police deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, told a news conference.

An FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies "will continue to work to identity and arrest whosoever is responsible for sending these packages," FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a statement.

'WORDS MATTER'

All of the targets are frequently maligned by right-wing critics. Trump has repeatedly criticized CNN as "fake news" and disparaged the mainstream news media as an "enemy of the people."

"There is a total and complete lack of understanding at the White House about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media," CNN President Jeff Zucker said in a statement read on CNN. "The president, and especially the White House press secretary, should understand that their words matter. Thus far they have shown no comprehension of that."

U.S. Democratic leaders in Congress said Trump's call for unity rang "hollow" because of his past statements condoning acts of violence.

Last week, Trump, who has joined other Republicans in accusing Democrats of encouraging "mob" tactics, heaped praise on a Montana congressman who assaulted a reporter in 2017.

At an event in Austin, Texas on Wednesday, Brennan also faulted Trump for frequent inflammatory rhetoric, saying the president "too often has helped incite some of these feelings of anger, if not violence, when he points to acts of violence."

"He should not be beating the tom-toms of anger and animosity and war," said the former CIA chief, whose security clearance was revoked by Trump after he criticized the president's summit earlier this year with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump at the Wisconsin rally called attention to "how nice I'm behaving tonight." "Have you ever seen this? We're all behaving very well and hopefully we can keep it that way, right?"

I get what you mean. The reason I think it won't have much of an effect on the midterm elections is that:

- If the guy is found and he's a right-winger, the people who already pegged him as a right-winger weren't going to vote republican anyway.
- If the guy is found and he's a left-winger, the people who were already convinced it was a false-flag weren't going to vote democrat anyway.
-In either case, the people (somehow) still on the fence about their vote will just view this as yet another one-man event, a lunatic with a screw loose who's been brought to justice akin to the Las Vegas shooter or the guy who shot up that baseball field in D.C.

The fact is that it'll take a big swing and a hit to really get anyone who had already set their minds on who they're voting for by now to change them - the voterbase is much too galvanized this close to the voting date.

Edit:

The CNN and Soro's one were locally dropped off. Never posted through the mail. That's why the stamps in the picture aren't postmarked.

I talked to someone a few hours ago who's worked in the USPS for multiple decades about this specific aspect of it. Apparently, that package was what they label a "non-machinable parcel" meaning it can't be automated, it is processed manually. From what they told me it's standard procedure not to postmark "non-machinable parcels" because they physically don't go through the machinery that would normally post-mark mail - they're hand-sorted. They said that all it really means for something to not be postmarked is that it wasn't put over-the-counter in a post office facility
