Of course they hijack stuff, they are broke dick cunts who latch onto "quirky" things, and even made the fucking word "quirky" itself become cringeworthy.
As for Tony, he seemed like an anxious prick at first. Looking back however, it does seem like they were good friends - perhaps he never met his parents and he is the type of clingy person who sticks around. Maybe Jeff stepped up to defend against him from bullies, and Tony just became his friend.
Alas, morons who don't know what friendship means automatically think they are faggot "lovers". You can make the same case for Frodo and Samwise's friendship.

He then later comes back a third time after being defeated the first one, with even MORE enhancements and then fucking drowns in a sewer.

Nah Tony was really annoying, he couldn't hang up the phone when he'd call Jeff. He's co-dependent regardless of if he's a homosexual or not. Jeff is the complete opposite, just like Dr Andonuts, he is checked out into his own world. Tony does look really stupid regardless with that shocked expression and hat.
 
Something that I found recently: I believe that the song "Katamari of Love" (awesome btw) was an influence on the soundtrack to UNDERTALE.
To my ear, these piano segments seem quite similar...

Honestly, the Katamari of Love riff sounds more UNDERTALE-y than the one that's actually in the game ...somehow.

I really didn't. I thought he looked "weird" when I played Earthbound, but then thought "maybe he's just a clingy person who never knew his parents, and Jeff protected him from bullying or shit". Because I am quite aware there are these types of people around.
Yet suddenly, "ha! gayyyyy!!!". It makes this fucking weird. How is that kid a homo at the age 13? Someone must have molested him, that's the only answer I have. And that is fucking dark, unnecessary detail to have.
It seems like Japan has lax laws & a culture that looks rather neutral to homo stuff so you know, perhaps they see this as an afterthought and not a big deal. Perhaps pederasty was part of society and they don't really care. Weird.
 
Gays are not taken seriously in Japan, that's why Tony is played for laughs. There's another gay kid in Mother 2 who proposes to Ness, the protagonist, but he automatically rejects him, gently. This would trigger the alphabet mafia something fierce.

Just recently Toby had to play damage control because he DARED to call Napstablook a he both directly and in a design document. Using Toby referring to the character that's more or less supposed to be a manifestation of your desires as "they" to be some kind of iron-clad rule about Chara's preferred fucking title is retarded. Chara is basically you. She/he/they/it/whatever is literally the physical embodiment of Gamer Instinct.

Chara isn't even a person anymore. Toby has directly stated that the most apt name to give the lost child besides Chara is your own name.
