The United Nations is taking heat after posting a bizarre new dictionary of “gender-neutral” terms to replace more gendered words used in everyday life — with social media users expressing bewilderment and confusion at the language policing that in some cases appeared to backfire.

“Help create a more equal world by using gender-neutral language if you're unsure about someone's gender or are referring to a group,” the U.N. Twitter account said.

The dictionary, originally posted by U.N. Women, includes terms that have been in regular use for a while -- such as replacing “mankind” with “humankind” and “chairman” with "chair.”

Others, however, are a little more strained. The list suggests replacing “landlord” with “owner” — a term that has its own problematic connotations related to slavery and cannot typically be swapped for the former term without dramatically changing the meaning. (“This is Bob. Bob is my owner.”)

It also suggests using “family name” instead of “maiden name,” although many people would identify their family name as the one they married into. It also suggests using “representative” for “businessman,” even though the former is normally used for a spokesman rather than someone in business.

The tweet was quickly flooded with responses by people suggesting the U.N. take its advice elsewhere — quickly zipping up a ratio.

“Stop trying to control people's language. It's creepy and unnecessary,” former British Member of the European Parliament Lucy Harris tweeted.

"You know we're over the worst of the pandemic when these issues are back being discussed," another user wrote.

Others expressed their opposition in memes, while some noted that "U.N. Women" was itself not a particularly gender-neutral term.

U.N. Women has been a source of controversy before. Last year, countries with poor records on women’s rights – including the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Lebanon and Nigeria – were among those elected to U.N. Women’s Executive Board.

I'm extremely proud of sneaking weed into the UN past their dumbass security and toking up in the bathroom.

Burn that motherfucker to the ground, but I am a big fan of the giant Trump poster they put up on the US UN mission building across the street.

You would think they'd have killer fucking security, but they really don't. I know a guy who accidentally walked in there with a switchblade still in his coat pocket and no one at the checkpoint even noticed despite it going through one of those TSA-style security scanners.

If there's any justice in the world, a careless weed-smoker will inadvertently spark a bathroom fire that does burn the UN down....

Ah yes, UN Women...the worse version of the UN that gave Anita and Zoe the time of day and contributed to this current mess.

That, precisely that, is what people fail to realize. When they hear "The UN" they imagine the Security Council calling down a swarm of blue-helmeted pedophile peacekeepers on anyone who uses the wrong language. But really most of what goes on under the UN umbrella is just make-work for rich kids and people who want to be "diplomats" in New York rather than wherever they came from. Nothing coming out of these UN sub-sub-subdivisions means anything or harms anyone.

UN forgot this one:
Taiwanese -> Chinese

Is it any surprise that the un is utter shit judging by how they’ve fucked up so hard in the past. They completely fucked up trying to stop the Rwandan genocide, they failed at keeping peace during the Somalian civil war, they let Saudi Arabia on the woman’s rights council, they caused the cholera outbreak in Haiti that they then tried covering up, refused to accept taiwan is a actual country and much more. This speech shit is just the tip of the incompetency iceberg.

Wasn't it the ones that published this gem?

They truly, genuinely need to all be defunded, without delay.

Seconded. Also...many years ago, I remember my mother railing on about the "New World Order" and "End Times." Seems like she might have a point which is...disturbing.

The best way I've heard it explained is: the UN isn't supposed to be some sort of competent world government. If they manage to accomplish anything positive, that's just a bonus. The value of the UN is keeping a diplomatic neutral ground open for the great powers to have their petty squabbles without starting World War 3, and for a bit of surface-level cultural exchange and network-building. In that respect, they're doing fine.

I used to think Dave Mustaine was a bit weird for not liking the UN. Each year I just get even more proof he was right.

Took me a while to realize that landlord is supposed to be outdated and owner was a joke as in "slave" owner. But hey im french, we just call our landlord the owner already. "Proprietaire" Or "proprio" for short.

We use the word "proprietor" as well. I believe it's technically slightly more specific than "owner" in English, but in practice that distinction is only made in legal settings.

Also, when the bourgeoisie want to sound more important than they really are, they sometimes describe themselves as being the "owner and proprietor" of a business, as if that's more advanced than being just one or the other.

I swear, there must be some kind of internal contest with these UN orgs to see who can come off as the most useless to the general public.

I always wondered what people who hated the new world order would think about the nWo in wrestling? Same style of takeover and it made the fans paranoid who would betray who.

Aha! UN's run by white supremacists confirmed.
