The United Nations is taking heat after posting a bizarre new dictionary of “gender-neutral” terms to replace more gendered words used in everyday life — with social media users expressing bewilderment and confusion at the language policing that in some cases appeared to backfire.

“Help create a more equal world by using gender-neutral language if you're unsure about someone's gender or are referring to a group,” the U.N. Twitter account said.

The dictionary, originally posted by U.N. Women, includes terms that have been in regular use for a while -- such as replacing “mankind” with “humankind” and “chairman” with "chair.”

Others, however, are a little more strained. The list suggests replacing “landlord” with “owner” — a term that has its own problematic connotations related to slavery and cannot typically be swapped for the former term without dramatically changing the meaning. (“This is Bob. Bob is my owner.”)

It also suggests using “family name” instead of “maiden name,” although many people would identify their family name as the one they married into. It also suggests using “representative” for “businessman,” even though the former is normally used for a spokesman rather than someone in business.

The tweet was quickly flooded with responses by people suggesting the U.N. take its advice elsewhere — quickly zipping up a ratio.

“Stop trying to control people's language. It's creepy and unnecessary,” former British Member of the European Parliament Lucy Harris tweeted.

"You know we're over the worst of the pandemic when these issues are back being discussed," another user wrote.

Others expressed their opposition in memes, while some noted that "U.N. Women" was itself not a particularly gender-neutral term.

U.N. Women has been a source of controversy before. Last year, countries with poor records on women’s rights – including the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Lebanon and Nigeria – were among those elected to U.N. Women’s Executive Board.

Didn't we already got this nailed centuries ago by the use of "they/them" when we don't know the person's gender?
Isn't this even more unnecessary than it is stupid?

I have an idea for the UN, maybe create your own post modern language to talk to each other while covering up child rape in third world countries. The attempt to colonize the English language is disgusting.

I'm disgusted with the reponses here. Transexual people are people too and you should acknowledge them with the basic empathy that is due anyone. The fact that people continue to callously disagree and even call for defunding them, is pretty stunning. All this resistance to changing social mores shows how much we need the United Nanny's, now more than ever.

What? I am all for replacing landlord with owner. I cannot wait to introduce my new tenants to the neighbors, explaining that I am their owner. Should be good for a laugh or two.

The UN - We can't solve world problems, but, we can sure solve ones we create specifically so our out-of-touch and academic-sourced solutions will work for once! Take for example the problematic language spoken in your own home country, well, we've got the solution right here! Who put us in charge? Really? You are asking that? I think the real question should be, how did you fail so bad that we had no alternative but to take over? I mean, really.... do you even KNOW how many homophobic words and idioms we found in your lexicon? You should be ashamed....

Don't they have a worldwide pandemic to fight?

Indeed! The virus that is white people!

So entirely gendered languages like German and Spanish are a-ok, but English needs to be raked over the coals to fit our agenda, gotcha.

Took me a while to realize that landlord is supposed to be outdated and owner was a joke as in "slave" owner. But hey im french, we just call our landlord the owner already. "Proprietaire" Or "proprio" for short.

I know riots and protests are considered a joke to most people, but I think it would be appropriate in this situation.

Here you have a group of people on a very high position that rather than deal with the current shit that's going on right now, they would rather language police.

Back in the day, these people would have their heads on Guillotines and nooses for being traitors of their nation.

UN is amazing
it's like a huge, multinational megacroporation
but unlike megacorporations it does not produce anything, just consumes resources and creates pointless bureucracy

Lol no, there have been many pushes to make spanish gender neutral, and there continue to be.

They are nonsensical at best and conpletely break the language at worst.

The current ones are either using "x" to replace any gender expression (based off of US' use of latinx, which makes it linguistic imperialism at its finest) or turning all words gender neutral by using the same structure as the few ones that already exist.

For kiwis that don't know a lick of spanish, here is an example.

Cat translates as Gato/Gata, O ending is for male, A ending for female.

An already existing gender neutral word would be Presidente, which I dont think I have to bother translating.

And here is how it breaks the language.

If we take the phrase 'what a pity' and translate it, we get "Que pena", if you were to use the retarded gender neutral language you would say "Que pene", this translates into "what a penis".

Both of these retarded alternatives have been pushed by the RAE aswell, which is one of many (and the biggest) entities in charge of regularizing the language.
