These school shooters apparently don't understand that it's a gun free zone.

They need signs, obviously.

And old librarian ladies to wag their fingers at them.

Have you ever spent time in an American public school? I have, and it does kind of give you some insight as to why someone would do this.

I don't know a single person in America who actually liked being in one!

Despite the obvious bullying that occurs with any student, some of my best memories were in public school so not everybody has that mentality. I met my best friends during this time, I became more active by going out for sports, I focused more on my grades when I figured out that I can get money for college just by doing well, etc.

Yes, shit happens in high school but these beta idiots need to stop getting this idea of "oh god that Chad just got my dream girl that I never had the balls to talk to, might as well shoot up everybody to show how much I mean business. MUH EDGYNESS!!!11 NO1 UNDERSTANDS!" Every single person will go through bullying and depression, it's in our nature and it's not going away no matter how many times we hear anti-bullying airheads. It's how we handle this that defines who we are. If you're the type of person that keeps setting up goals for yourself and to not give into peer pressure or discrimination, you're a strong person and what every American should strive to be in. But if you're just an asshole that doesn't allow anybody into your life and then decide to harm people just because you think the world sucks and you're entitled to everything then yeah you're probably not someone I'll give the time of day for.

To me, this isn't a matter of gun control but more on the matter of these kids following trends that are popularized on the Internet. Yes it can start with regulating who we sell guns to, but even if we did that what's stopping them from using different weapons like knives? If shankings became the new school danger should we place regulations for kitchen knife control too? Bottom line is that we need to teach the students to not become killers. Maybe get off the Internet and join clubs. I may sound old fashioned here but hey, these shootings need to stop.

Isn't it illegal to have guns on campus though? Like, why aren't these gun control laws working?

I know that this is sarcasm, but at NAU you're allowed to have a gun on campus as long as it's locked in your car. So the NAU gunman was actually following the rules up until the point where he started shooting people in the parking lot. I'm sure that people will manage to argue both that this means that a stricter campus policy could have stopped this or that this is a sign that gun control doesn't work.

You certainly have a much different experience than I did, mine was not so positive. I didn't exactly go to the best or friendliest schools, either. I kind of still see American public schools as basically "diet prison," but I digress.

I never really got the chance for sports or anything like that, due to moving a lot, so even if I did want to try out, I wouldn't have been able to stay. In fact, I didn't really like being in any extracurricular activities at all, even though I was forced to by parents. My mentality was that I didn't want to be at school any more than I had to, and I just wanted to do my work, turn it in, be left alone by everyone, and get the fuck out someday. While it was a hostile environment and every school has its shitheads, it's only four years of your life.

Besides, there are people who I'm sure had things far worse than anything I've had to go through. This is not a simple "dream girl won't notice me" deal, it's been much worse. A classmate got thrown into a trash can once, and another was knocked unconscious by his bully for apparently no fucking reason. It's sometimes hard to imagine at times, but there's probably somebody on campus worse off than you.

Apart from that though, millions of kids have gone through bullying at some point in their lives. While it's inevitable you will encounter it and it won't go away, it's certainly not a good thing for anybody. And while anti-bullying PSAs are well-intentioned, I question their effectiveness in general. Granted, you are going to have to deal with adversity, but at the same time, nobody deserves to be beaten unconscious or stuffed into a locker on a daily basis. That kind of shit just causes psychological damage and creates more problem people like the kind who would go on rampages. Either way, adolescents are cruel, but hopefully most of them grow the fuck out of it by the time they graduate. Granted, there are exceptions, but still.

I don't think it's about gun control or even mental illness at times. Sure, many people who do these kinds of things may have some degree of mental illness, or at least a diagnosis, but in my view, it's more about feeling like you have a shit lot in life, and wanting to get your name known quickly. A disturbed young man who feels he's at a dead end in life sees someone "Go ER" and realizes that "if that person can have his name known and be remembered, I can too!"

There's a lot wrong with the way these things are reported, the media sensationalism and pasting the guy's face everywhere for weeks or even months at times, poring over every gory detail of his life in a futile attempt to find an answer.

If the network news stations truly want an answer, all they need to do is look into a mirror.

That's an argument that could go in any direction, but that being said, only law-abiding people are going to really care about such a thing. It sounds like the person who had the firearm in his vehicle wouldn't have cared about the rules either way, after all, he did break a pretty serious one there.

Would disallowing the possession of a firearm in one's vehicle have prevented this incident? Doubtful, but changing the rule posthumously is going to make someone feel good about themselves.

Have you noticed what they often tell children to do? "Tell a school administrator!" "Tell an adult!" It's still a good idea to report bullying to authorities, but the problem is that they usually don't resolve the issue.
