I think you're only assuming that Chris' beliefs are only about him.

Chris has pretty consistently been telling people that there are higher truths to the universe, involving these stupid cartoon dimensions, and that people are shallow or naive for not considering them.

And I don't think you paid enough attention to the actual crazy shit that happened with Idea Guy. Chris wanted his religion to serve him, but he had to deal with the "reality" that it wouldn't. Like when Rosechu turned out to be a tranny. That burned him up. I'm still not sure where Chris sits with that.

There's plenty of existing human religions that are very similar to Chris' religion. Voodoo, wicca, various pantheistic religions. Shamanism especially. Chris' behaviors here are very similar to a lot of primitive people's religions. Just with a more obvious veneer of stupid because Chris sources his mythology from cartoons and not nature or whatever.

The first sentence on the wikipedia article on religion is "There is no scholarly consensus over what precisely constitutes a religion". So a lot of these debates seem a little useless.

But those are some interesting points. The existence of toonworld cannot be disproven. I think that is Chris' jumping off point. There is a sense in which "toonworld is possible" is more true than "toonworld is impossible".

Also, I think that Chris "losing control" of CWCville is a more fundamental point than people give it credit for, and even than you suggest here. He isn't just believing whatever he wants to believe. That seems like a crucial factor in terms of Chris' "religion". Take anyone who creates a religion, like L Ron Hubbard or Joseph Smith. Are they a charlatan or not? A key test for that would be whether they believe they can freely make any changes they want to their faith without affecting its truth value. Chris' beliefs have rules, which even he must follow.
