Regardless of what you think about the confederate flag now, I don't think it was racist then when the movie came out.

Eh, the Confederate Flag was somewhat controversial even back then, but very much less so compared to nowadays. Most of the racism controversy with the flag before the Charleston church massacre had more to do with KKK groups using it in the 50's and 60's or displaying it on state government institutions.

In a lot of movies and TV shows from the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's, hell even into the early 2000's, a Confederate flag was a quick visual reference to indicate someone was Southern or even just some sort of blue-collar redneck or good ol' boy.

It was a form of short-hand visual archetype, like someone displaying a Union Jack and wearing a mohawk haircut to show they were into punk rock or a guy in a tracksuit with a New York or New Jersey accent to show they were part of the Mafia.

There wasn't really any racist intent beyond that.

The Division doesn't work because it has government agents use extreme and sometimes indiscriminate force against people after a pandemic has devastated the US.Nobody is nice in a game which has as its basic subject the Apocalypse. At least those are the unfortunate implications.
There's also a bit of humor when they give Extra credits a shoutout for their 'analysis' of why its problematic.More exactly how in that 'analysis' Extra credits mentions how in real life diseases like Ebola have been contained and didn't cause widespread societal issues. It was made in 2016 so.

It's this, you even saw it in tame kids cartoons up until the 2000's too, before HERITAGE NOT HATE, it basically told the audience "you are now somewhere in the South". If you were to apply this troper logic to The Muppet Movie, Kermit and the gang met Miss Piggy while having a great time at the LITERAL NAZI FAIR

Nobody cared, to the point where Richard Pryor was one of the guest stars in the same carnival

Tropers take Metroid headcanon very seriously:

"Related to Samus being wlw; you can pry my trans Samus headcanon out of my cold, dead hands. Samus is still absolutely trans though. It's just science."

"Sneering at a trans headcanon (especially in a "lol, I'll beat you up or otherwise forcefully silence you" way), or for that matter headcanon rep for any minority (especially one with poor representation) comes across very differently to performative anger at, say, a ship you don't like.

"Eww, no Samus isn't allowed to be trans, You Monster!!" has a very different message to "Samus would never like pineapple on pizza, You Monster!!"."

"A lot of fanwork I've seen goes "yeah Samus is gay but she isn't actively dating anyone, she just lives alone with her cat"."

"It's perfectly reasonable for Samus to pick up girls while hanging out at the bar."

These are the same people who were mad she had a white male love interest in Other M.

I'm still stuck on that mustache. And let it be known that he does this shit ALL the time...On the forums...Populated by impressionable teens.
