I honestly don't know what's worse: how absolutely retarded TvTropes has gotten these days... or the fact that I still see people trying to seriously argue that the site is a "fair, unbiased and accurate" source of information. It's insane.

Actually, I want to ask; was TvTropes ever a good source of information? I remember reading about the site a while back, but it never really looked all that great to me, personally.

Outside of their useful notes pages and the ever-shrinking pool of real life examples; it really isn't. One could say that it has some use in criticizing just how often certain ideas get reused, but it doesn't take an lot neurons to figure that out.

But citing them to unironically win an argument is as retarded as it sounds.

I discovered a lot of interesting media through TVTropes and, at one time, there was enough actual diversity that the Real Life section of the tropes would have some interesting trivia.

Overall, it knocked down the level of media literacy to the ground with its stupid reductionism and I suspect without TVTropes the last 15 years of snark-fueled, subvert-your-expectations, deconstructivist drivel just would not have happened and Woke would have lost one of its main internet hotspots along with Tumblr and later Twitter and Reddit.

Yeah, the whole site just seems to be pretty retarded these days; thanks anyway!

subvert-your-expectations,

Ironically, subverting expectations has become so common these days that I'm more often surprised when something gets played completely straight.

deconstructivist drivel

This is something that I dislike; seriously, how exactly did deconstructions become so fucking popular these days, again? And more importantly; why are things that are labeled as deconstructions just given a free pass and worshiped so much, even when the actual writing quality is subpar at best? Seriously, a book could do literally nothing but shit all over its pages, have numerous spelling mistakes, and generally be as crappy as possible... but as long as it was labeled as a "deconstruction", it's seen as high art. Apologizes if I'm MATI and autistic, I'm just tired of the crappy writing.

Well, it's been a thing ever since the 1960s but in terms of fiction this started in the 1980s with people like Alan Moore doing Watchmen basically. The whole 'dark deconstruction' of established genres spread like wildfire in the 90s and I think it spread into literature in the 00s with A Song of Ice and Fire. I'm pretty certain GRRM was a fan of all those comics that tried very hard to follow on Moore's steps and failed. Martin started writing ASoIaF in the mid 90s but the series got popular in the 00s and got the show adaptation from the early 10s that infected the audiovisual media with the deconstructionist virus.

In terms of fine arts like painting, sculpture and the like this has been happening for a long time. They literally won't teach classic painting, classic architecture or even classic literature anymore. If anything, classic arts are condemned as "white", you know. This has been happening for such a long time it's the plot of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead, even though Ayn Rand's Objectivist idea of proper art is closely associated with Futurism, which is also a favourite of European fascism but I digress.

Mild powerlevel, but the sort of shit that get taxpayer's money just by peddling words like 'deconstruction' in public works and city embellishments and architecture is enraging and I am unsure whether if it's a good or a bad thing that the general public doesn't know / doesn't care because art hacks are so ingrained into the system that extending the culture wars into this territory would get very nasty very quickly.

No, not really. I only ever used the site as a time waster, but it was never that informative to me.

SheIsAManInJapan page, the bastion of no troonery, had fallen

I think tv tropes attracts a lot of amateur creatives types . If you are completely new to writing it's not completely useless if say you want to learn the jargon. Phrases and words like " kick the dog", "foreshadowing" etc And maybe some examples to get the gist.

The problem is that people don't outgrow the site, and instead get assimilated into the culture, and most become insufferable and pretentious clones of each other.

I could point a lot of issues, like their obsession with promoting the message like a cult.

But it all boils downs to one thing :extreme arrogance. The naive idea that classifying tropes all day makes them somehow superior, experts in fiction, or, even more delusional, good at writting.

The Whedon Snark? In the end it's Just a way for them to be smug about usual genre conventions. Sincerity is frowned because they feel superior to the “silly” genre they are writting for.

Obsession with Deconstruction? The root is simply feeling too good for traditional storytelling. Everything that takes things straight is somehow inferior regardless of quality.

It's especially stupid when the site deliberately ignores certain aspects of certain things; trying to make certain things look better than they are. Usually left-wing or furry shit, in particular. Can't even be consistent on their own classifications half the time.

Nice chunk of autism here, but... I do think that Deconstructions can be done well, if handled by a skilled-enough writer; they can be used to open up new avenues of storytelling and generally be a good storytelling tool. Problem is, the vast majority of writers only really use deconstructions as an excuse to make everything depressing and angsty - because people confuse "mindless depression" with "interesting" - and the twats on the site just endlessly praise it, for the most part. Probably the worst tend to be deconstruction fics, imo; given how plenty of authors tend to have sub-par writing, you'd think that it might make the TvTropes idiots not blindly praise them. Sadly not.

Seriously, this one fic that's recommended on the site basically gradually devolved into half-hate fic, half-author's personal echo chamber, and yet it's given high praise. It's absurd.

No, tropers, we can tell. People can tell. There is no such thing as "passing".

Once again, narcissistic trannies making something that has nothing to do with them (in this case logical fallacies) all about themselves.

Troonery is a cult. Plain and simple; everything has to be about them, and only them, all the time. If it isn't then they'll lose their minds and/or try and rewrite everything to be about them.

Like a broken record player; whoever wrote that stuff really can't stop repeating themselves, can they? Talk about an echo chamber...

Also, I can tell the two top parts about the actors lending their facial likenesses is from Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth's Trivia page, but where are the other posts about "depression" from?
