President Donald Trump got something of a softball from CBS News' Steven Portnoy at his press conference in New York Wednesday: What's your message to the young men of America?

It was a softball because the single most obvious message a President could issue to young men right now is to respect women.

But Trump went in a wildly different direction, arguing the US is in a dark period as women come forward to say they've been assaulted.

For context, this is the question Portnoy asked:

Portnoy: "About the hearing tomorrow, you were asked earlier by my friend from Sky News about the message that you are sending the women of the country. What about the message that you may be sending to young men? You're a father. What does this moment we're in, the cultural moment..."

Trump: "It's a very big cultural moment."

Portnoy: "Right, so what message do you have for the young men of America?"

The big cultural moment is the #MeToo movement, along with the outpouring of women coming forward to share stories of harassment and assault.

The President, however, did not give the easy answer. Instead, he told them they could be next.

Complaining that his Supreme Court nominee is accused of sexual assault and reliving his own anger at the many allegations levied against him over the years and during the presidential campaign, Trump returned to the idea he put forward earlier in the news conference that all of these allegations against him and Kavanaugh are, respectively, part of a "big fat con job."

It was in that earlier question by the Sky News reporter that Trump said calling something a "con job" really wasn't that bad and he's said worse in the past.

Trump pointed at Portnoy and said, "I could have you chosen for a position ... and somebody could say things. And it's happened to me, many times, where false statements are made and honestly, nobody knows who to believe."

He didn't stop there.

"I could pick another Supreme Court judge, justice. I could pick another one, another one, another one. This could go on forever. Somebody could come and say 30 years ago, 25 years ago, 10 years ago, five years ago he did a horrible thing to me. He did this, he did that, he did this, he did that. And honestly, it's a very dangerous period in our country."

He said the dangerous time is "being perpetrated by some very evil people, some of whom are Democrats, I must say."

It's a game that they're playing," he said. "It's a con game at the highest level."

Trump said there's a danger some candidates might not want to even be nominated for the Supreme Court after seeing what's happened to the "wonderful man" Brett Kavanaugh.

It's bigger than the court, though, according to Trump.

"This is beyond Supreme Court. This is everything to do with our country. When you are guilty until proven innocent, it's just not supposed to be that way," Trump said.

"Always I've heard you're innocent until proven guilty. I've heard this so long. It's such a beautiful phrase. In this case, you're guilty until proven innocent. I think that is a very dangerous standard for our country."

Then Trump said all that being said, he looks forward to hearing what both Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford have to say during testimony Thursday.

Portnoy tried to get him to give a more specific message to young men, but Trump ended the press conference.

He didn't really need to say more. The message Trump delivered to young men is this: Be afraid.

Which is not as good a message as don't assault women.

Trump actually sort of predicted the last question would be a difficult one for him when, just before allowing Portnoy to ask it.

"Elton John said when you hit that last tune and it's good, don't go back. I've seen, have you ever seen, they do great, they hit the last tune and everyone goes crazy, then they go back for an encore, alright? And they don't hit it. And they leave - everyone leaves and they say that wasn't a very good concert."

"Let's go," Trump told Portnoy. "Don't make me wrong."

The people suggesting Trump needs to tell men not to rape just reminds me of Frank Reynolds' idea to make a song about how we shouldn't diddle kids.

Respect is earned, not granted at birth. If women can't handle that, then they don't deserve respect.

Dunno, I've seen plenty of non-violent men reel from even getting close to a woman when they're afraid of a lawsuit they can't win, so obviously it's working great.
Telling rapists not to assault women hasn't worked all too well, yet. Something to do with it being written into the law and being goddamned obvious or something.
You mean telling bad people not to do bad things isn't effective?!

And people think this guy is inarticulate.

To be honest that's one of the best statements of his whole presidency, out of everything it was the truest and least jumbled out of them all except maybe "you are fake news" that whole press thing was fucking glorious and may have been one of the few times I've ever not bitched about missing flipper when the president comes on every channel.

Also that Washington Post burn was erection worthy.

Well, his statement wasn't wrong. We've reached the point where some random girl in your past can accuse you of something with zero proof, and people believe her immediately, declaring you guilty.

Hillary Clinton sexually assaulted my Weiner, dick and balls at a sock hop in 1923. I'll never forgive her, ever.
Bob Saget raped and killed a girl in 1990 and everyone should know it. Goddamn, that joke was prescient and I don't think it was even intentional.

It's even better with actual transcription.
"Elton John said 'when you hit that last tune and it's good... don't go back.' I've seen- have you ever seen: they do great, they're great, they hit the last tune, and everyone goes crazy... then they go back for an encore, alright? And they don't hit it. And they leave - everyone leaves and they say 'that wasn't a very good concert, was it?'"

Trump just repeats himself instead of humming and hawing when he gets stuck. Take a Trump speech, replace all the, you know, replace all the, I have wonderful towers, believe me, you know, replace all the repetition with "ummm" and you get a standard Obama speech.

Dunno why people haven't caught onto that.

It's almost like Trump has found success in verbalizing and sympathizing with the fears of people that democrats don't care about or actively attack.

It's because of the way we process words vs ums and ahs. Repetition is also a very effective persuasion technique, so using it instead of just training yourself to speak slower is more effective. You may not have noticed, but your brain did and all that.

Always dwelled on what's going to bring #MeToo to an end or at least a slowdown and I think I've figured it out. A lot of women today are cheering on the whole thing with the chant of yaas kween slay and gurlpower, but when they realized they've entirely scared men out of the dating scene with this and they don't want to be single anymore, who's going to have to initiate the dating from now on?

At that point, it'll be the women that have to find out how fun it is to go through the cheesy pick-up lines, the footing of bills, the sweaty palms and the mountains of rejection.

Isn't it great? Everyone was talking about how the whole planet was being overpopulated and all it took to reverse that was a hashtag spearheaded by vapid aristocrats of the modern day Sodom and Gamorrah known as Hollywood

I get the feeling as time goes on, more people are being turned off by it. Having the spearhead of the movement being accused of raping a teen boy, paying him a lot of hush money and then blaming it all on her dead husband certainly doesn't help.
Sadly forgot to take a photo of it, but last week there was the usual political etc. cartoon in the newspaper. This time it was making fun of people who bought houses next to nightclubs and then complained about the noise. It was a picture of a couple of yuppies holding a protest sign and when asked by a reporter the guy said;

"It's like #metoo. We knew what we were buying into, but decided to complain afterwards anyway".

Quite a statement from a media outlet. If the media are saying this about the movement, I wonder what the ordinary punter on the street thinks?

If anyone were to ask me this silly question I would answer "buy a good pair of quality workboots. you don't think you will ever need them, but you will."

Why anyone is surprised that Trump, of all people, did not go on some feminist tangent furthering their narrative is beyond me.

Bob Saget raped and killed a girl in 1990 and everyone should know it. Goddamn, that joke was prescient and I don't think it was even intentional.
He also sucked dick for coke.

Haha, trump you glorious shitposter you. He's not wrong, to be honest...

None of that changes the fact that he is just an awful speaker. My god man, it's terrible. At least he is apparently self aware:

"Elton John said 'when you hit that last tune and it's good... don't go back.' I've seen- have you ever seen: they do great, they're great, they hit the last tune, and everyone goes crazy... then they go back for an encore, alright? And they don't hit it. I don't think they really care. The few times it's come up, the response has been "What's metoo?". It might as well be the name of a new pokemon for all anybody knows.
