There are men who have sex with men but still insist that they're straight* and they're a large enough cohort that they confound AIDS research and stuff like that. So some researchers used MSM (Men who have Sex with Men) as a descriptor.
I actually thought that mlm and wlw were offshoots of that.

WLW was used very commonly in women-only spaces in the 1990s and 2000s, for women who wanted to romantically pursue women, regardless of if said women self-identified as lesbian or bi or whatever.
