I’m too much of a retard to post the graph of the rise in autism rates superimposed on the rise GMO agriculture and the blasting of nearly every crop with glysophate that took off in the mid 1990s. (Even non GM crops like beans & oats). But it’s easily found online and it’s pretty sobering. Diabetes and inflammatory diseases mirror the hockey stick too. Maybe it’s vaccines, maybe it’s old or compromised eggs and sperm. Maybe it’s microplastics or any number of toxins we encounter daily. Take your pick. Whatever the origin, it really seems to be another case of “if we can’t fix it (because reasons), let’s make it socially acceptable”. Like being obese, insane, addicted, fetish ridden, etc.

There's a form of estrogen called 17β-estradiol that is produced in the brain from androgen precursors; why don't these dudes' magic ladybrains pick up the slack and start producing it themselves?

(And surely we could just do a special test for this hormone and it would tell us immediately which dudes have a ladybrain and which don't? Why is no one doing that?)

The claimed rationale is usually something along the lines that autistic people question social norms more so are more likely to recognise their trans identity over allistic (non-autistic) people who unquestioningly go along with everything because normies are dumb or whatever. But what Dr Hakeem's saying about their own obliviousness based on theory of mind really does match how I've experienced things or how we've seen sideshows act - "I must pass, because people keep calling me she", or "I must pass, because I'm wearing a pronoun pin", and the reality of being clocked or misgendered shocks them because they didn't conceptualise that not everyone saw them as a woman. A lot of semantic based arguments seem to operate on similar lines, and I'm even seeing it with stuff related to the Cass report "well based on the regret rate, you need to pause knee surgery for review!" - no, you don't, because they're not the same.

Despite the fact that I've seen this many times, the actual statistics I've seen have never said regret rate for knee surgeries, it's always been satisfaction rate. Now these might be interchangeable in a certain sense, but it feels to me like the satisfaction you would get from a knee surgery would be from return of function and minimization of pain, whereas the satisfaction you get from a transition surgery is based on a whole ton of complex variables (and delusion, but will pretend that one's not there). But it feels like treating these two things is the same statement sort of glosses over obvious differences in the "objectivity" of the assessment by the patient. I don't know if anybody has pointed this out but it feels like medical survey should not be treating satisfaction as though it is analogous across all classes of procedures. I don't know if medical kiwis know if anybody ever talks about this but it seems like a weird syllogism of two different kinds of satisfaction

A lot of that will be better understanding of autism but if the actual rate of autism is increasing in the population, that might be part of the reason why there's an increase in the number of trans people. (Bit of a two for one - because autistic people can be very literal minded, so if they hear "you are definitely autistic" and then "autistic people are more likely to be trans", they're then more likely to start interrogating if they're trans, independent of ever having felt any gender discomfort).

I'm not trying to discount any explanation for a rise in autism rates or the idea that we're better able to identify autism, but sometimes I wonder if some of this isn't just an artifact of the framing of mental illness in our society. I've always found it interesting that the autistic populace tends to have a bimodal distribution in IQ scores, where both lower and higher IQ scores than the average of 80 to 100 appear at higher rates than in the normal population. Attempts to find a genetic source of autism has found at best an incredibly complex series of genetic interactions featuring dozens of genes, and, as I think was mentioned in this thread previously, there are discussions of a broad autistic phenotype that speaks to certain tendencies in the population that can compound and co-occur in people in an extreme way. So sometimes I wonder if our attempt to frame autism as all the same disease, or a spectrum at all, is masking a variety of sources. The example I always think of is juvenile diabetes mellitus, or type 1 diabetes. Despite the fact that we identify both types of diabetes as essentially two varieties of the same disease, their sources are actually wildly different. One is an autoimmune condition affecting the pancreas and the production of insulin, the other is insulin resistance as a result of too much production of it. Because these conditions were identified by symptoms first, their framing and naming creates a sort of semiotic link between them that doesn't actually necessarily bear out in reality, at least in terms of understanding the source or cause of it.

I wonder sometimes if we're not grouping together a bunch of different neurological quirks that can seem similar, and in so doing helping to spread social contagion among vulnerable populaces. It's always been notable to me that many lolcows almost seem to externalize their autism when they talk about it, like it's an infectious disease that exists separate from them and could be cured one day. It's like the diagnosis allows them to create an imaginary scapegoat for all their problems. Whenever they do something stupid it's not because they have a tendency to do stupid things, it's their autism making them do it, like it's a little possessing demon. And I think of one autistic person I know who's fairly functional, and it seems like he doesn't do that, like it's more that he recognizes his neurological abnormalities and works to compensate for it? Anecdotal I know, but I do wonder if creating this label of autism that we're applying to more and more people, linking them all together and essentially glossing over differences means that we're not actually helping people become functional, we're just enabling maladaptive behaviors. Troonism seems like an obvious example of that to me, where we're creating this imagined community where these memes can spread.

Would you say this is transphobic or just a joke in poor taste?

A few years ago I joined a queer group in my area on Facebook. There’s this girl who I know (that used to be a client of the service I work for) that also is part of the group as she identifies as pansexual.

I noticed she popped up on my Facebook as a potential mutual friend so I clicked on her profile and her bio says:

“I’m an eco sexual and my pronouns are tree/trunk, you MUST respect this and use these pronouns at all times lmao”

I was taken aback by this and thought it was a little inappropriate. I contacted the admin of the queer group and pointed it out to her. She was also taken aback and told me she would ask her about it.

A couple of days later the admin got back to me and basically said that this girl vehemently denied she was transphobic and that she was making fun of people who have neopronouns who insisted on people using these terms and get upset when you don’t.\

I told the admin that I felt it was inappropriate anyway but there was nothing the admin could do about it as she wasn’t breaking any rules.

I reached out to a few of my trans friends who are friends with this girl and they said that it was just a joke in poor taste.

When I checked out the girls profile again she had written on the bottom of her bio “nice try.”

Am I over reacting? Would you say it’s just a poorly distasteful joke or is there any transphobia involved?
