An opening has been made for the fan anime of Mystia's Izakaya. Yes, a fan anime of a fan game.

Honestly, fan-anime for fangames could be really fun if you know what you're doing. Mystia's Izakaya could make for a fun one, like a slice-of-life/cooking anime with a "monster of the week" element where Mystia has to serve a specific dish to one of the many residents of Gensokyo.

And 75% of the conflicts are caused by Yuyuko.

Ed said something about Akatsuki being very good years ago when there wasn't a lot in their catalog that was lousy. This would've been around the time of Last Destiny and Eternal Summer, my two favorite albums respectively from the group. After thinking for a while, I've come to a conclusion that there's something to his post about most of their tracks after 2021 not standing-out very well with mediocre music for most of them and truly atrocious ones in-between. There probably is a visible decline in quality of the compositions in this circle, despite the high production costs in the flashy MVs that get popular every now and again.

Overrated is exactly what I would call Akatsuki (and IOSYS as well), as I don't see many fans online talk about other circles aside from those two. It's not a bad thing for things to be popular, mind you, but it does get tiring a little to constantly hear the conversation. Though maybe mentioning Demetori, Lost Garden, and Novy/Amplified Sound not getting any discussion isn't worth saying because then everyone will flock to them and make it lame and gay to talk about.

I'm fine with my favorite circles staying in their small corners as is, I know that's for sure!

Don't think I saw any archives for some of these Google Docs mentioned earlier in the thread, so I've scoured for archived versions on the off-chance they get deleted.
Mr Blake has thrown his hat into the ring with a proper google doc.
Hadn't seen any of you post this yet and figure you have a interest in archiving it.

It seems troonhou fest 2025 didnt get away with having no drama after all
They seem to have made their own big doc and it was shared by this rando I've never heard of.
It seems to be alot.

I feel like i see more comments about Akatsuki records being overrated than I do actually positive stuff about akatsuki records.

Not to say I don't agree with it, though - the songs aren't really bad, but a lot of them are quite samey. Most of their best songs are when they break away from the mold, like with Adieu to the Lovely Graveyard and of course Necromantic. either that, or go completely balls-deep in to the commitment to the screams like Bad Magus. But most of it just feels like something made to be catchy even if it means they're not good.

In fact, now that I think about it, it feels like a lot of their recent MVs are about finding one sound or catchphrase, and finding every excuse possible to hammer it in for every part of the song. See cases like NONONO, Oni Kage Pink, AahnUNKNOWN, and KAPPAYAPPA, all of them just hammering the same few rhythms and phrases. To be fair, most of their biggest hits (Rock'n'Rock'n'Beat, Gotcha Gotcha, Karmanations, Hanipaganda and again Necromantic) have some sort of catchphrase running through them as their most iconic part, but I feel like the what's been learnt from this is to just have more phrases that get repeated endlessly, rather than have one or two key ones that get polished to a fine sheen and used to their fullest. It's telling that the one song they've made that's cracked a mil on youtube this year is Midnight Parade, which again takes a quality approach to their catchy jingle.

And I do not get the frequent claims that Stack's voice works for every character. It's not even close. Shinra-Bansho's duo both have a better range than her and they don't even have to, they're a duo.

Ultimately, Shinra-Bansho is just an objectively better run channel, I think. More interesting songs with a larger variety, and generally less of this increasingly hammering on a few tired points. When Shinra-Bansho does something similar to the above (the recent Sakuya song comes to mind) it's developed enough to actally carry the song, like the Time Stoppaa chant. So damn catchy with it's call and response. And that's not covering the MVs that are just wildly unique and creative, yet perfect fits for their songs; U r My Nightmare takes a dense shit on every MV that Akatsuki Record's made in the last two years just by itself.

But on the small scale, i have to say I'm a big fan of Paradot/Zenerat. Like, it's partially because it seems to be a solo effort, but because of that there's just this sense that it's very much still a passion project at heart for them. Like, about one in every four songs that becomes an MV is some form of Dullahan under the willows, but that's just because they're an unapologetic banki fan. And like every few days they post some stupid maxwell chen shitpost, but there's just this earnestness in everything they do that's so endearing.

Well Disc, you've nailed down everything related to Akatsuki and other similar groups doing more with their work. I don't think I have much to reiterate or add onto with this discussion. Now with that being said...

Zenerat is absolute gold, you can really tell that he takes great joy composing and creating for the love of the game. I can't think of any slouches from him on the top of my head because his ability to take any electronic genre and make it flow seamlessly with our favorite tracks, while not getting stale very quickly, is a marvelous display of talent. The OST for his game, Kubinashi Recollection, is one of the few instances I did actually buy Touhou music because it was just awesome to listen to. Plus, the game was a very fun puzzle title all on its own so it does make it work very well with what was set up.

He is what I believed ZUN to be when I first got into the series ages ago: a one man operation with a strong passion to make everything he makes the best it can reach. And he does this pretty damn well to have me keep coming back whenever he uploads. There's no one else quite like him in the community, even on the Japanese side of the pond. The dude is just very funky and rather groovy like that, y'know?

I've already said my peace on Touhou fan arranges, so I'll post an arrange I don't think I've recommended yet.
Moonstruck Dance

Anyways, for lack of anything else interesting going on in the Touhou sphere, there's an effort to get nameless fairies into a high spot in the Touhou 2025 popularity vote.

It's being headed by Jo2n, one of the fan animators of the community. I don't really trust people obsessed with the fairies, but astroturfing polls with joke answers is... not really that funny either. Listen, it's a slow week and we still have until the weekend for Touhou 20's release.

FELT definitely got that way towards the end, too, although they were mid-to-bad from the start. I remember when they were at the peak of their popularity circa 2014 and they and Alstroemeria were the only circles anyone in the Western community would talk about. Unlike Akatsuki, though, FELT and Alstroemeria were never good, with FELT being the absolute peak of mid and that one Bad Apple arrangement being the only thing Alstroemeria has ever put out that didn't rival bro-country in just how fuckawful it is. Dead serious, listen to Lovelight. It's genuinely the worst album I've ever heard, with even Western troonslop like 100 Gecs and Deaf Grips looking brilliant by comparison.

I miss when Demetori were still doing new albums, but on the other hand, I'd rather they stay retired than come out with mid. They were always the high water mark for Touhou doujin arranges in my opinion, excluding View of Spiral Riverside (although in their defense, Spiral Riverside is bad because of UI-70's involvement, while their contributions were all good). White Elephant was also a pretty good circle and, honestly, they were a better Akatsuki than Akatsuki. I'm of the opinion, personally, that Akatsuki peaked with Down Down Doll and haven't come anywhere near that level of quality since.. but White Elephant's worst still absolutely mogged their best.

I appreciate Shinra-Bansho not just because they're a great Touhou cover channel, but they also branch out into doing their own original songs. For example:

Anyway, here's the recent song they did covering "Love-Colored Master Spark":
