And I know this isn't serious at all and we are just shooting the shit about something we generally like but I sincerely hope that when WH 40K comes out and it displays the same issues that we had for the past two decades you don't try to argue that it is again an issue with time and money. It's a new engine that they have worked on for years, meant to carry the franchise for another decade or two without all the tech bloat from Warscape. There is no excuse for the AI to lack a basic understanding what it is meant to do in the game when 40K launches.
I will believe that they can code a better AI when they finally can make sieges not shit. The fucking pathfinding on siege battles alone makes me want to just quit the game altogether.

So that's on 40k to prove if they can do it. I'm keeping my expectations suitably low.

Well we will have to agree to disagree here.
Nawh no worries there. I can admit I am biased being a software engineer who has dabbled in AI for fun so the stuff I see isn't necessarily what you're witnessing, and we both have no idea of the inner workings of CA. At least we are free to debate it and recognize it has room for improvement.

This I fully agree with you on. As it's a brand new release with no technical debt built up or broad range of competing mechanics there's no excuse for releasing with a lobotomized AI. From what we know 40k has been in development for years so any dedicated dev will have had the time to make something at least semi-competent.

Apparently the Orks in that demo showcase were meant to just run into the player just to showcase the game but don't worry for the actual game they're not going to do that. Right...
Never trust demos this early, they are heavily railroaded to drive hype. The (very) early access previews for some content creators is a better indication of what to expect, and from the limited footage thus far I wouldn't expect any significant improvements. Who the hell knows though; stranger things have happened to CA of late, and 40k isn't a franchise they can afford to fuck up.

Redditors really are braindead sheeple; half the post on the sub are about how they're painting the map with Nagash. Truly jangling keys tier; it's not an achievement to paint the map with the singularly most OP faction in the game bro. (You can argue that it isn't hard to paint the map period in TWW3, but at least some lords like Tretch or pre-rework Wulfrik still need to work for it.)

This petition begging for Shogun 2 to be free is kinda lame. Its just 10 dollars.

Realm Divide would've made more sense if it worked like it does in FotS where dudes on the same side headed by the strongest daimyo in the pack join up to take on everyone else (and it'd even be historically accurate!) but obviously it'd be a pain to implement, compared to just pro-Imperial or pro-Shogunate they'd have to make some sort of dynamic way of building coalitions and alliances and advanced diplomatic shit like that like you can in Nobunaga's Ambition or even in Total War's very own Three Kingdoms. I think overall 3K has the best campaign. It's got issues, sure, but the AI actually knows somewhat how to use all mechanics at their disposal plus they get affected by all the shit a player can get affected by. Hell, if the player sucks too hard or if they just let it happen on purpose, the AI can trigger the 3 kingdom divide if one of them reaches enough prestige required to form a kingdom before the player does. The thing that sucked the most about Realm Divide in Shogun 2 is that the AI was not affected by it at all, just like how it doesn't get affected by movement attrition in Attila for example, or how it doesn't get affected by having to pay army upkeep in almost every game since Shogun 2.
I actually think 3K's campaign is criminally underrated.

Really great diplomacy and the way the game is played meaningfully changes.

In the early game you rely alot more on your heroes and there is alot of great heroes with exceptional abilities. Lots of units with low moral and more emphasis on duels. By the late game your great heroes start dying off and you have to rely more on your elite units that you have built up. Instead of heroes the game transitions to a more traditional TW experience where generals perform more of a supportive role.

I have not read the books or watched the series, but from what I understand that is how they play out. Its thematically neat.

Realm Divide
Realm Divide in Shogun 2 is fine. In the original game you could keep one ally loyal for most of the divide, and it will probably be better now with a new diplomacy system.

You can also always play on Records mode for that traditional TW experience. In any case, yeah. It's the only TW game with meaningful diplomacy that almost reaches Paradox levels. You can have allies and vassals and it doesn't feel like a liability and you can be sure that they won't stab you in the back. Well, unless the 3 kingdoms era gets triggered and one (or both) of your allies spawns an emperor seat but it makes sense why the kingdoms would all have a massive diplomacy penalty. And even then it's not like Shogun 2 where the AI checks if peace=declare war, you can even gang up with one of the kingdoms against the other but you always know that sooner or later you're gonna have to fight the other kingdom.

The AI also doesn't get that many cheats, which helps with diplomacy. For example let's imagine there's a faction next to you that hates your guts but you're already focusing on another front. If they're starving you can keep them in line by giving them food for 10 turns and I've never had the AI sabotage themselves and attack me while I was keeping them from starving. Also, I mentioned vassals before and how in every other TW game they're a fucking liability. I played one campaign with Shi Xie, one of the free rulers you can download, and besides having an interesting starting position (being a Han culture faction right next to the Nanman tribes), he gets bonuses from nepotism and he gets the most bonus points if he has a family member as a vassal. Given the south is chock full of garbage 2 settlement provinces that are poor as shit, it's perfect for offloading your retarded useless sons, cousins, nephews etc. and giving them a shitty province as their own, while also replacing them with strong characters that you can hire, as Shi Xie starts with a massive family tree.

Sry somehow missed your reply.
Thats how it should be, but looking at CA and the modern TW fan base its clear that any form of constructive critique is not encouraged. Even if it is necessary and serves and important function.
Who the hell knows though; stranger things have happened to CA of late, and 40k isn't a franchise they can afford to fuck up.
As much as I am critical of CA you are right in this regard. They don't have the wiggle room to fuck 40K up. Which is probably the only reason I can expect a decently made game. If 40K launches in a state similar to Rome 2 or WH3 Sega will just pull the fucking plug. And rightfully so.

The petition might be lame but the reasoning for it isn't. Instead of a patch to the OG game finally fixing longstanding issues, adding QoL features, future proving the game and enhancing its modding capabilities we are getting an entirely new game and executable that we have to cough up money for. It's a pretty shitty move to be honest and CA are not in the position to piss in the face of their customer base.

Agreed. Unappreciated by the fans and killed off too early due to CA's incompetence.

CA never, ever should have tried to do Romance mode. It didn't work in China and doubling-down in Troy with those ridiculous mammoth skull cyclopes was one of the dumbest things they've done. That combined with their fucktarded balance choices by making unit types hard counters (militia ji will eat top-tier cav alive if they take the charge thanks to charge reflection and absurd charge bonuses), multiple general types of dubious utility, overpowered archers, and forcing you to level up a general to be able to recruit good units meant that as much potential as it had under the hood there was no hope of it ever realizing it.

It worked and was insanely successful.

The problem with Three Kingdoms is that they made bad DLC and used that metric to assume people had no interest in the game getting more DLC.

CA really outdid themselves when it comes to their cynicism, the Shogun 2 Demaster brings even less to the fucking table than Rome Remastered did for Rome 1 and they unironically expect niggas to pay $40 for it. The promotional material focusing on the Battle of Sekigahara and the rivalry between Tokugawa Ieyasu and Ishida Mitsunari is the cherry on top, as you can't even play as the latter in the campaign. You think they'd add some new haphazardly-made campaign similar to FotS where you play as the one of the pro-Toyotomi or pro-Tokugawa clans, trying to gather as many clans on your side and eventually trigger the struggle between the two sides. But nah. There is even a mod focusing on the Sekigahara campaign that they could steal most assets from.

Gudea is a positive polly so this review from him is quite bad for CA.

Good. Mandating mod.io-only should be punished.

CA has a truly demoralized fanbase so they actively want to be haters. However, CA deserves this.

Unfortunately for the devs of Mataboo who probably did a decent job and didn't make most of the bad decisions hurting the game, decent will not be good enough to pacify this hate.

My personal theory is that CA is butthurt about Valve and Steam taking their cut and are slowly trying to move away from that company. This is absolutely stupid, but it is CA.

It's also not going to work. Mod-wise for example Paradox has seen what an unmitigated disaster their Cities Skylines 2 workshop offshoot has turned into (there's a reason they don't repeat this with their in-house studio releases) and Amplitude quietly walked back the mod.io restrictions for Humankind when they thought no one was looking (Endless Legend 2 was Steam Workshop out of the gate too).

Every major developer and publisher hates Steam with a passion, but thanks to Epic's epic (lol) fail there's no chance at breaking the monopoly for the foreseeable future. You have to beat Valve at Valve's own game, and that now means more money than even the CCP is willing to throw at the issue. Funny how simply giving gamers what they want winds up proving immensely profitable. CA (thanks to Sega breathing down their neck) won't repeat this once they see the hit to their bottom line.

He is accusing Gudea of plagiarizing bug criticism of the game from people who did even not have the game and for changing his mind in response to a negative reaction to his previous positive videos.

TW oldfags are so weird. They will constantly talk about how they don't care about modern TW but then but out long video essays about modern TW.
He also made a long ahh community post going "omg people who talk about games get free access to new game" as if this hasn't been a common practice since like forever.

Total Warfags will act like this vidya franchise is something special despite it being carried solely by a formula that was invented 26 years ago.

One thing that upsets me is that they simply did not even care enough to make new Steam achievements. None for Rise of the Samurai and none for the new factions.

Donkey came back to shit-talk the game and then declared he was leaving again.
