Have you considered upgrading to a Gotek? Then at least you can copy them to a flash drive instead.
Probably best not to let work know you know anything about computers.
I have suggested it, but apparently the bosses looked into it and the service techs were going to charge $5,000 to do it, and since we only have two lathes and the business will go under if the primary lathe is bricked I can't go and install one I find off Amazon for $25

I'm a little surprised that floppy drives survive as long as they do on a machine shop floor. I guess the vendor stocked up on spares and charge you slightly less to replace them than using 'modern' technology.

you give me this "uhm sweetie just use the password don't you know it's more safe and actually it's completely easy so why are you even talking about it?"
Linux users larping about good practice is always funny. this time it's extra funny because it's coming from the retard that signed up with a username linked to his gay erotica

pardon me for barging in on this thread, but i've been thinking about this:

is the problem with "bloat" rooted far beyond the surface-level fluff as far as windows goes? i read Showstopper! in high school (a book on winNT's internal development decades ago) and while iirc NT itself was meant to be portable/mostly ISA-agnostic, i can't help but think dave cutler's work is being tested to its absolute limits (regarding the hybrid kernel & HAL design) and NT was originally meant for workstations 20+ years ago anyway. in fact, ME's fiasco was what made general consumers go from 9x to NT (XP) in 2001.

linux purely as a monolithic kernel seems more logical on low-end constrained environments like the 4GB RAM/64GB eMMC laptops in stores today. to me, the problems go deeper than spyware and electron weather apps.

Yes and no. Generally almost all modern operating systems have many layers between the user input, how it is processed and the output. It doesn't help that much of the UI is now built in GC'd languages that aren't that efficient (JavaScript, Python). The other aspect of bloat is a lot of stuff is now simply a webpage running in a Chrome instance. So many programs are basically running another instance of a web browser.

There is a load of telemetry going on in Windows at all times. Some of this is sending shit about what you do to Microsoft; some of it is done for security. So every time you open a program on Windows, a bunch of calls are happening somewhere in the OS doing various checks before the thing is executed.

One thing I find funny about the crack theory that OEM's shipping Windows by default is the only reason why Linux hasn't dethroned Windows is that no one would ever be happy if OEM's started shipping Linux, because they'd ship a distro the Linux cultists would despise and seethe over it becoming the de facto standard of the Linux desktop, like Ubuntu or Fedora, because it'd need to be as "just works" as possible and have a company behind it to blame if anything goes wrong.

It's incredible how deranged one's mind can get when they hyperfixate over a kernel, turn it into their entire personality and then dedicate every waking hour of their lives obsessing over a multi-billion dollar corporation and their OS.

As for the kernel discussions, there's more to modern Windows than the kernel itself. For example, WDDM. The entire OS stack for graphics and rendering. Much like everything in modern Windows, it's all based on the result of the Longhorn rewrites, where Dave Cutler himself had to step in and reset the development to work from the 64-bit server version of Windows XP to build the modern WinNT foundation on which Windows is based on to this day. There's so much within that that changed over the years, for better or for worse.

Here, Windows 11 did introduce good changes, believe it or not. For example, auto color management, which is basically black magic for SDR screens. My ThinkPad has a dogshit 45% NTSC screen that's badly washed out, and never have I thought to enable that. When I did, suddenly the colors are much closer to sRGB despite the screen not being up to spec. Sure, it's inaccurate, some colors are incorrect and it's not fit for any meaningful color work, but at least now it's acceptable. And all I did is enabled this one function and boom, instant improvement. It also brought other improvements such as native VRR support rather than the one you'd have from a GPU driver vendor, as well as hardware flip queue which is big for gaming. You know how people complained about DWM adding extra latency and forced V-sync in borderless fullscreen games? Modern Windows architecture fully gets away with that, now you have black magic that essentially treats borderless fullscreen as exclusive fullscreen behind the scenes, so you get all the benefits of both.

These are meaningful improvements over Windows 10 that people overlook because of the artificially generated emotional hatred of Win11, where people gaslit themselves into believing that it's worse for gaming than Win10, while in reality it's the other way around. Win11 has marginally better gaming performance as there have been many under-the-hood modernizations people overlook when they seethe over GAC bloat and dogshit UI changes while refusing to see if they could rectify that. And the #1 argument Linux gaming fanatics have over Windows, which is "better performance" and "better 1% lows" is all thanks to DXVK, with it being possible to gain the same improvements on Windows since DXVK is a native Windows DLL, and chances are Microsoft will end up implementing similar black magic optimizations within Win11. Hell, they'll likely just take DXVK and adapt it to act as a Windows module since it uses a zlib cuck license.

This is really the #1 reason why no matter how much Linux desktop gets better, it'll never surpass Windows, leading to this "wunderwaffe mentality" where Linux cultists truly believe they only need one thing to turn everything around in their favor. Windows has a single software stack from top to bottom, that maintains backwards compatibility. Software designed for GDI will work on DWM. Software designed for Windows NT 3.51 will work on Windows 11 via WoW64. You want to run Photoshop 6? You can run Photoshop 6. Meanwhile Linux, even in the Red Hat area, refuses to keep any sort of ABI stability or backwards compatibility. Whenever they feel like changing everything for the new thing that's worse and less battle tested, they just will and tell everyone else to eat shit. glibc decides to break something? They will, so just recompile from source if your binaries stopped working. Package distribution is an unfunny joke, every distro does it their own way, every distro has their own repo, Flatpak is the closest to a standardized distribution hub but you have to do the dirty work to set it up in your environment and AppImage is the closest Linux got to having a sensible way of distributing software but not many people ever bother using it, often citing that it's not "the Unix way" or whichever ideological delusion happens to dictate a given cultist's decision making.

This is what creates a ridiculously hostile environment for software developers. Without software developers, you don't have meaningful software people would want to use on your OS. And without that, your OS ceases to have a use case beyond ideological circlejerks and technological masochism. It's why bridging the gap in Windows software support on Linux is the only way you'll have a good Linux software ecosystem, as Linux never had and never will have a good software ecosystem. Windows does, because for all the damage Nadella has done to Windows, the core fundamental parts of it remained the same, and software written 30 years ago will still work today.

But really, this video and how people react to it is the best evidence as for why desktop Linux will never succeed, unless it is redesigned from the ground up while ignoring any and all naysayers.
Linus uses desktop Linux. He has to. He has to compile and test the kernel before be accepts any code changes. That's why he chose Fedora, as it's the most "just works" distro where he can easily swap the kernel. It's why he puts it on ARM Macbooks. He has direct experience with the Linux software ecosystem and every single one of his criticisms holds true to this day. What is the common community reaction to this video? They attack his character. They say that he has no idea what he's talking about. That he only develops the kernel so he has no right to talk about desktop Linux since he has no idea how it works. They do the 80IQ thing of "it works in my case so everything he's saying is false" anecdotal bullshit. Everything and anything but to admit that he was right, and that they, the Linux community, act like a religious cult that cannot accept any criticism of their deity, instead attacking anyone who does, as their deity is perfect. Even the man without whom their cult would never exist isn't safe from their wrath. And every time I repeat this opinion, I'm the one that's attacked by the cultists, as they can never ever admit any fault, so all they can do is to yell down any opposition, and ideally silence them so that they won't be able to spew any more heresy towards their deity.

I have infinitely more respect towards Linus Torvalds than to any Linux cultist, be it here or anywhere else on the Internet. When it comes to software, Linus is a pragmatist, he isn't afraid of calling out bad code when it's obvious there is bad code. He even criticized his own kernel for being too bloated, while the cultists would circlejerk about "the Unix way" and call it the best kernel ever made. It's honestly pathetic.

Anyway, here's another "Microsoft left an uncompressed asset in a test build" material. The NT 4.0 startup and shutdown sounds. I always liked these the most, they sounded like you were starting up a beast of a machine, which was about right given where NT 4.0 was used back in the day.

I wonder how many more gems like these reside in the beta build archives available online. I don't know if the old NT 5.0 sound ended up similarly, given how that was later changed when NT 5.0 became Windows 2000. With that, someone on WinClassic did a remaster of those, and they did a pretty good job.

Is the Linux cultist boogeyman in the room with us now?

I don't know, the grudge seems to be fairly mutual. Three posts after seven months of radio silence that could've simply been ignored got treated like a huge derailment bad enough that they had to cry to jannies about it. But I'm sure I'm completely wrong in my belief that Linux users are the most fragile, sensitive faggots on the uppercase I Internet that cannot accept any opinion that deviates from "Linux is perfect".

I'd say using the Windows thread to shittalk Linux and using the Linux thread to shittalk Windows would be the most viable compromise, since these two threads are in dire need of special treatment like the gender war threads and the Russo-Ukrainian war threads.

I use Linux, Linux is imperfect...interesting, I haven't been stricken by lightning for writing that opinion.

Slap fights are unbecoming. Why can't we all just get along?

I wonder who cried to the jannies. It's like people don't know there's option to ignore users, or just skip your page long rants.
Also I'll keep using Linux, If I need to play old vidya then W10 LTSC exists, but that's only because Wine still sucks for seamless modding.

but that's only because Wine still sucks for seamless modding
A few months ago I installed LMDE on a spare PC to see how easy it is to set up gaming on Mint. Would've probably been easier if I a) used mainstream Mint instead of LMDE and b) used Heroic instead of Steam (I could write an entire rant about how much I despise Valve for their Steam client here), but I fully copied modded oldies from my Windows PC, and to my surprise, I didn't even need to declare any DLL overrides, Proton treated all the mod DLL's like the ASI loader (DLL injector essentially) like Windows would and it all just worked. Obviously it's not very representative, running a modded game from 2005 on a system with a 1060 and a Haswell CPU, but it worked and I didn't have to touch the terminal to get things going, so faggots shilling FOTM "gayming" distros can all go fuck themselves, Mint still just works.
I'm sure it gets messier when you want to actually do the modding on Linux, since Windows installers under Wine and all that bullshit, and I wouldn't be surprised if Mod Organizer 2 just doesn't work due to the VFS fuckery it uses being Windows specific. Or newest versions of Special K if it's functionality, again, relies on Windows' software stack.

Because normal people don't throw a big sad and start reportfagging the moment somebody argues.

not "the Unix way"
Linux is cargo cult Unix. The Unix way is to stand up a production system and never have to reboot it until the heat death of the universe. The Linux way is to break ABI compatibility every 25 minutes.
