Cardiff Magistrates' Court (Image: MEDIA WALES)

Two 14-year-olds who violently assaulted victims at a school and college in Bridgend and were also found guilty of blackmail and assault have narrowly avoided custody.

The girls, both from the Bridgend area, and one of whom was just 13 at the time of the offences, both pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to one allegation each of blackmail, two allegations of actual bodily harm and two allegations of assault. Appearing for sentencing separately at a hearing at Cardiff Youth Court on May 13 they were both told prison had been considered owing to the level of violence.

The attacks on four victims took place between March 2 and 4 this year at Brynteg Comprehensive, Bridgend College, Pyle railway station and near to a leisure centre.

One of their victims was pulled to the floor, kicked in the head and face and suffered a bloody nose, swollen ear, bumps to the head concussion and PTSD, the court was told.

Another was ordered to kneel and kiss their feet and then kicked in the head and body on the ground while being sworn and screamed at.

One of the victims was so traumatised by the attack and threats that they took an overdose and were hospitalised, the court was told.

In victim statements read out in court three of the victims described being unable to eat or sleep properly since the attacks, feeling too scared to leave their homes or go back to school and college.

They said they were "petrified" their assailants would attack them again and described feeling "let down" by the justice system.

Neither the accused, nor their victims can be identified because of their ages.

The older of the two assailants was already on a youth referral order at the time of the attacks with a previous conviction for actual bodily harm. The younger received a caution for possession of a knife or bladed article in a public place 2024, the hearing was told.

Mobile phone footage played to the court showed how they attacked one of their victims in a school corridor, pulling her to the floor, kicking her head, punching her body and face and shouting abuse.

Footage also showed a girl made to kneel on the ground at college and kiss her attackers before being kicked, hit and yelled at her, while another video showed the attackers waving their feet in a victim's face and ordering her to kiss them.

The victims were threatened with being "battered" and told to pay £60 or videos of them kissing their attackers' feet would be shared on social media. When video was shared one victim felt so embarassed and ashamed that she considered taking her life, Sewak Singh, prosecuting, said.

In powerful testimony in person to the court one of the victim's mother's described the impact on her and her family. Fighting back tears she said her daughter has had problems eating, sleeping and socialising since the attack: "She says she does not like being in the house alone and has no doubt (they) would attack her again. She used to be out with friends but not now."

Statements from the mothers of two of the other victims were also read out. One said she would never get over seeing footage of her daughter attacked while people stood around and filmed it, doing nothing to help.

Another described the trauma of knowing her child had been assaulted in school, where she should have been safe and described how she did not want to go back. One said her daughter had changed and was no longer the person she was before the attack.

All spoke of feeling let down by the justice system with their children left too scared to go out alone and in fear of their attackers,

The older of the two accused wiped away tears when challenged about how she felt hearing the impact of her crimes. She said she felt "horrible" and was crying because of "everything".

Defending her Michael Hall said she had a "turbulent background" but had reflected and shown some remorse and there was "scope for rehabilitation".

The younger of the two admitted "I am sorry. The things I have done. I shouldn't have done."

Defending her Michael Hall said she was impressionable and had been subject to "malignant peer pressure", but he acknowledged she was guilty of "wanton criminality" and "has to be punished".

The older of the two was given an 18-month Youth Rehabilitation Order with an Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Order to include a 30-day activity with supervision and a 9pm to 7am curfew. She was also barred from entering the area where the attacks took place and all education institutions apart from those she attends. She will also have GPS trail monitoring.

On top of this a four-year restraining order was imposed banning her from contacting the four victims, including on social media, or going to their homes. Her parent was also ordered to pay all four victims £60 each in compensation on her behalf.

Issuing the sentence chair of the bench Jane Anning told her: "We feel these assaults and the victims' ongoing fear of violence mean these offences clearly indicate prison. However, there is a direct alternative to immediate prison and we have decided to take this route - a Youth Rehabilitation Order with iintensive supervision and surveillance - the highest sentence available without sending you straight to prison today."

She warned the girl that "because of the level of behaviour prison was a very real option" and warned that should she not comply with the order and restrictions she would be back before the court with more serious implications.

The younger of the two was given a Youth Referral Order and restraining orders were imposed in respect of the four victims banning her from contacting them, including on social media, or going to their homes. Her parent was also ordered to pay each of the victims £60 compensation on her behalf.

Sentencing the younger of the two the chair of the bench told her the attacks had also caused "severe mental trauma" on the victims and their families.

"We feel this is so serious prison is justified. However, you are only 14. We have decided it is a priority to give you every possible chance to put your life on a better path. The choice is yours."

No court costs were imposed on either defendant.

Again this bullshit! If you "decided to take this route", then you don't actually "feel" "these offences clearly indicate prison", you "feel" "these offences clearly indicate" a slap on the wrist.

> a 30-day activity with supervision and a 9pm to 7am curfew. She was also barred from entering the area where the attacks took place and all education institutions apart from those she attends.
She attacked the victims during the day in the educational institution she attends.

> The victims were threatened with being "battered" and told to pay £60 or videos of them kissing their attackers' feet would be shared on social media.
> Her parent was also ordered to pay all four victims £60 each in compensation on her behalf.
This is a joke, right?

This is a joke, right?
I can only agree 100% with what you say.

It is a joke - these girls have ruined the lives of others and are getting a second chance because 'oh well, they're still young, they're only kids.'

Kids can be evil, as we all know - the Bulger killers, anybody?

What I would like to know is what has turned kids like these feral. When I was fourteen, I didn't make malicious threats or attack my peers/fellow school pupils like this.

Just what has changed... I do not understand how anybody could think that conduct like this is in any way acceptable.

Very sad news that the father of murdered April Jones has died without ever finding her body:

Paul Jones (Image: Wales News Service)

The father of murdered child April Jones has died without his daughter's remains being found. Paul Jones previously suffered from encephalitis - a serious condition that causes swelling the brain.

Aged in his mid-50s, Paul Jones died from the illness which he developed in 2018, six years after five-year-old April was abducted near the family home in Machynlleth. The disappearance of April in 2012 launched one of the biggest search operations in UK history, with an appeal by then-Prime Minister David Cameron and extensive efforts from police, rescue teams, and countless volunteers.

However, April's body was never located, and local man Mark Bridger, then 46, was arrested and later imprisoned for her kidnap and murder.

He has refused to tell police and her family what happened to April's body.

Paul's step-daughter Jazz Jones shared their family's grief on social media on Tuesday. According to the Mirror it reads: "It is with broken hearts that my brother and I wish to let people know our dad (Paul Jones) passed away early hours this morning.

"It was very unexpected and we are all in shock.

"Harley and myself will update people with further information as we know more but please give us our privacy to mourn our loss."

Another tribute from friend Allan Hughes on Facebook said: "Just heard of the sad passing of a truly amazing friend Paul Jones in the early hours of Tuesday morning, a lot of you knew him as the father of poor April Jones. Who was taken from us in 2012.

"But myself and many more know him from being a great dad, son, brother and friend, also as part of the family.

"We grew up together in Penarcau and had many adventures... Now you'll will be reunited with April and your mam Rest now peacefully Paul Jones. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the family."

Following Paul's brain diagnosis in 2018 April's mum, Coral, described having to remind him of what happened to their little girl.

She explained how the condition caused him memory loss meaning he could not understand why the youngster had not visited him in hospital.

Paul, then 49, broke down when Coral told him their precious five-year-old daughter had been killed, she said.

Bridger was jailed for life for April's murder in 2013 when traces of her blood were found all over his home as well as bone fragments in his fireplace. But he has never revealed what he did with April's body, with police fearing she was dismembered and dumped around the Welsh countryside near his cottage home.

Investigators also found a cache of child porn on his computer - as well as pictures of April and other local children. He was handed a whole life tariff at Mold Crown Court after being found guilty of kidnap and murder at Mold Crown Court.Mr Justice Griffith Williams told him: "There is no doubt in my mind that you are a paedophile, who has for some time harboured sexual and morbid fantasies about young girls." He said father-of-six Bridger abducted April for a "sexual purpose" and disposed of her body "to hide the evidence of your sexual abuse of her."

If Welsh schools are anything like US schools, attempting to help someone getting beaten is a good way to either A) catch a beating the the assaulter is black because then his homies jump in on you or B) get arrested and expelled too because of the no tolerance policies that say doing anything besides getting a teacher means you're just as involved as anyone, including the victim.

A body has been found off the coast of Llandudno during the search for a missing boy. North Wales Police this evening confirmed a body was recovered during the search for 16-year-old Athrun, who disappeared on Saturday, May 10 while on a family holiday to North Wales.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: "A body has been recovered this evening during searches for missing 16-year-old Athrun.

"Multi-agency searches resumed this evening, Wednesday May 14th, in the West Shore area of Llandudno following sighting of a body on Tuesday evening.

"Searches conducted by the police underwater search team, NPAS and coastguard resulted in a body being recovered today at 6.20pm.

"Formal identification is yet to take place, but Athrun’s family have been informed and are being supported by officers.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious, and the coroner has been informed."

Chief Inspector Trystan Bevan said: “My deepest condolences remain with Athrun’s family, and I would ask for their privacy to be respected at this incredibly sad and difficult time.

“This is not the outcome anyone hoped for, and I would once again like to thank partner agencies and members of the public for their overwhelming support and tireless assistance with the searches over the last five days.”

Athrun, who was from the south Gloucestershire area, had last been seen close to the boating lake and playpark wearing blue and white patterned swim shorts.

"Extensive" land, air and water searches were carried out by specialists from several agencies as soon as the missing person report was raised. On Tuesday, police said a body had potentially been sighted in the sea near Llandudno shortly after 7pm that day.

Note, I've tried to ascertain a surname for Athrun but Wales Online and other media outlets are also just calling him Athrun.

I like sheep. They are nice animals.
They are indeed, and Wales has a facility for transgender sheep. It's called Ewe Switch.

Breaking the law of this thread (because it's mine and therefore I can), a non-Welsh story but a funny one, whereby a well-known X Lolcow called Supertanskii (Netanya Marie Smith) was recently mercilessly trolled over 'Nepalese Candles'.

Caveat: Supertanskii is an abhorrent uber-Leftie, Trump and Farage hater, 100% Tories out, former Starmer swooner and also a grifter who thinks that only she is right. Makes ALR look passably nice.

Anyway, she recently typed the following cobblers up on X/Twitter and doubled down on what a nice person she is - totally not a virtue-signaller:

Screenshot_20250514_201249_X.webp

The internet then did a glorious troll of this insufferable virtue-signalling moron:

"My name is Michael Payne, and I am a nosy neighbour. Now, not a lot of people know that I know this, but in recent days I’ve taken my Nepalese neighbours a candle, complimented a trans woman on her sunhat and was overly friendly to the immigrant workers making my deliveries."

Nature is healing.

About time. We just need to mercilessly take the piss out of these lunatics as nature intended. I swear current year couldn’t have happened without us defanging humour and satire as ‘offensive.’
I couldn't agree more!

Back to some Welsh news, and the leader of Wales, Eluned Morgan, was told to give 'a straight answer' on BBC Breakfast News this morning.

She was asked whether her government plans to copy Scotland and offer relief to people impacted by the winter fuel allowance cuts

Wales' First Minister Eluned Morgan (Image: PA)

Wales' First Minister was told to give a "straight answer" to questions about her party's policies in a testy interview on BBC Breakfast. She was asked about Keir Starmer's language in a speech about immigration this week but also whether her government would take measures – as has happened in Scotland – to help people affected by the UK Government's cuts to winter fuel payments.

The First Minister said she wouldn't have used the language Keir Starmer used earlier in the week when he said the UK ended up risking becoming an "island of strangers without stricter controls on immigration".

She clarified that comments she made in the Senedd earlier this week were in response to "a right-wing position" - the Conservative group leader Darren Millar.

Asked if she would have used the same language as the Prime Minister she replied: "I don't think I would have used it, no." She said: "What I do is to stand up for the people in my country and on my Labour party membership card it says 'country first'. Well I'm putting my country first. What might be right for my country may not be right for the rest of the United Kingdom – we have a very different approach"

She was asked a number of times if the language from the Prime Minister was divisive. Having failed to get a clear answer presenter Charlie Stayt told the First Minister: "People like straight talking in politics and amongst politicians this is one of the debates you have that people like the idea that people answer things straight. Does that correspond? Is that something people want – straight answers?" To that she replied "I think so".

Then the presenter asked: "I'm not sure yet if you've given us a straight answer as to whether you think Sir Keir Starmer's language about an island of strangers was right or wrong, so on the lines of a straight answer to a straight question, do you, as the First Minister of Wales, think his language was right or wrong?"

"I wouldn't have used that language," she replied.

"Do you understand when I say that's not an answer to the question?" the presenter countered.

She said: "I am going to do what's right for my country and I'm telling you there will be an impact in particular to our ability to recruit care workers particularly in places like where I live where we have less than 7% immigration in Wales but almost 50% of the doctors and nurses where I live are trained overseas."

Mrs Morgan told the programme she felt "supported" by the UK Government but said they were not aligned on some issues, saying the knock-on effect of the changes to immigration rules will affect Wales' care and health sectors. "That's an example where I would say we're not in the same place," she said.

She was then asked about the winter fuel payment cuts. The First Minister said it was the "number one issue" coming up on the doorsteps with campaigners. She was asked – again repeatedly – whether her government in Wales would look at reversing that in Wales.

"It would cost us and we would have to take money from somewhere else," she said. "It's a challenge for us," she added.

"What I'm reluctant to do is to plug gaps where it's withdrawn from the UK Government that we go and step in."

Mr Stayt told her he wasn't seeking any commitment but whether there were people working on any relief scheme. The First Minister replied: "I don't want to make a commitment today because it's important for us to see what we can do to we stand by the people of Wales but it would be very difficult."

Eventually she said it would be going too far for anyone to take from her comments that there were any active discussions about "plugging a gap". "We would rather the UK Government consider this particular issue once again," she said.

Murderer stamped 'wonderful nan' to death in her own home

0_SBR_DPW_071124Flynn_01.webp

Dean Mears murdered grandmother Catherine Flynn from Rhyl

A man who killed a grandmother in her own bedroom has been found guilty of her murder. Dean Mears had admitted the manslaughter of 69-year-old Catherine Flynn but denied her murder.

During a nine-day trial at Caernarfon Crown Court, the jury had heard Dean Mears, 34, of Bodelwyddan Avenue, Kinmel Bay, broke into her home in Cefndy Road, Rhyl, last October. He had killed her there but had no explanation as to why

Prosecutor Andrew Jones KC told the court that Catherine died after being repeatedly stamped on by the intruder.

Under cross examination, Mears was asked: “Why did you stamp repeatedly on her face?... Were you intending to kill her?"

Mears replied: “I don’t remember... I don’t remember what my intentions were.”

Today, the jury of eight women and four men took four hours and three minutes to return a unanimous guilty verdict. As the jury foreman indicated a guilty plea Mears, in a dark suit, dark tie and white shirt in the dock, looked impassive.

As the verdict was read out, there was a thunderous shout of "Yes" from people in the public gallery. One man there yelled: "You dirty rat."

The judge His Honour Rhys Rowlands told the defendant: "Mrs Flynn had been an extremely vulnerable lady who was killed by you in what should have been the safety of her own home after you had broken in."

He said any loss of life is tragic but the murder of Mrs Flynn was "truly horrific". Mears broke in, passing her chairlift, and stamped on her head repeatedly, causing catastrophic injuries.

He said: "As to exactly why you behaved in that way only you know." He said he had taken ketamine, cannabis and earlier cocaine.

The judge said he has every reason to believe Mears went to Mrs Flynn's home by mistake while high on drugs but "only you know and have chosen not to tell anyone".

He said the case was a "particularly serious matter". There will be a life sentence with a tariff to be set at a sentencing hearing on June 20.

He praised the "forbearance" of Mrs Flynn's family during the hearing and said he couldn't "for one moment" put himself in their shoes.

During the trial, the court had heard that Mrs Flynn’s daughter Natasha had got an alert from her mother’s ring doorbell camera at 10.27pm on October 24.

She watched in shock as she heard glass shattering, which was the defendant breaking her downstairs window, before he entered and killed her mother. Mrs Flynn was taken to hospital with serious facial and brain injuries and numerous fractures and died there the following day.

The doorbell footage audio heard a man asking: "Where are the keys?" with a woman saying: "I don't know." Then there were "approximately 15 thuds".

Following Mrs Flynn's death, her family have remembered her as a "wonderful mum, nan, great nan, auntie, and sister, and also a second mother to many and a great friend".

A husband and wife have denied defrauding Britain's top school for A-level results out of more than £5million from its charity fund.

Yasmin Sarwar, 43, and husband Nadeem Sarwar, 49, have been charged with multiple theft and fraud offences against Cardiff Sixth Form College.Yasmin Sarwar became head of the college's charity and it rose to rank above illustrious Rugby and Marlborough schools with pupils travelling all over world to take top A-levels. Cardiff Court Court heard the couple allegedly used over £496,000 from the school to buy a property in a leafy suburb of the Welsh capital while also using more funds for refurnishing.

They are also accused of transferring hundreds of thousands of pounds into different bank accounts and possessing criminal property relating to £4,100,000 of student fees between 2012 and 2016.

At the time they were charged police said a probe into the college had been jointly carried out with the Charity Commission.

Yasmin Sarwar, of Cyncoed, Cardiff, pleaded not guilty to fraud, two counts of theft, two counts of fraudulent trading, possessing criminal property and three counts of transferring criminal property.

Nadeem Sarwar, of Pentwyn, Cardiff, pleaded not guilty to fraud, three counts of theft and five counts of possessing criminal property.

Mother-of-one Yasmin Sarwar moved from Malaysia to Britain to study for her own A-levels when she was just 17.

At the time her school was named the best in Britain for A-level results, she said: "I am a mother to the students.

"I want to make a difference in their lives and them to then make a difference in other people's lives.

"To create that difference in someone else's life you need to create that trust - and say I am here for you because I care."

After graduating with a Biochemistry degree from Cardiff University Sarwar started posting fliers offering her tutoring services for science classes to A-levels.

A paedophile was found in possession of more than 5,000 indecent images of children as young as six-years-old as well as AI generated images of child abuse. His family blamed his offending on "fixated behaviour".

Jack Gillard, 25, was visited by police at his home after intelligence had been received about the downloading of child abuse images. A raid was carried out on July 26, 2023, and a number of devices were seized including the defendant's mobile phone.

A sentencing hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court on Friday heard Gillard was arrested and made no comment.

He was taken to Merthyr Tydfil police station and again made no comment.

Prosecutor Hashim Salmman said a digital forensic examination was conducted on the seized devices and more than 5,000 category A, B and C images were discovered on the defendant's phone.

There was also prohibited material generated by AI which depicted young girls being raped by adult men.

One category A video was accessible, and was described as a compilation video including children aged between nine and 15-years-old involved in various types of sexual activity with adult males.

The youngest child depicted in the images was just six-years-old.

A number of screenshots were found of websites and forums including a collage of images.

There were a total of 1,476 category A images, 370 category B images and 3,145 category C images.

Gillard, of Trealaw Road, Trealaw, Tonypandy, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. The court heard he has no previous convictions.

In mitigation, it was said the defendant's behaviour would "never happen again". It was also said his family have concerns about "fixating behaviour, but he has been working hard on reducing his cannabis consumption.

Sentencing, the Recorder of Cardiff, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, said the defendant was a risk to children due to his "sexual interest in pre pubescent girls".

Gillard was sentenced to one year and 10 months imprisonment.

He was also made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and sex offender notification requirements for 10 years.

Boy, 11, arrested in connection with 'schoolboy attack' video

The child is the third person who has been arrested in connection with an incident in Lliswerry, Newport

An 11-year-old boy has been arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged attack on a schoolboy as he walked home on Wednesday evening. The child is the third person to be detained in connection with the incident.

Officers from Gwent Police launched an urgent investigation into the incident underneath a footbridge on Spytty Road, in Lliswerry after a video circulated across social media platforms.

On Thursday morning a 30-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy, both from Cwmbran, were arrested. The man was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, while the boy was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Tonight an 11 year-old boy from Newport has also been arrested on suspicion of common assault and affray.

The alleged victim is a pupil at Lliswerry High School, and Newport Council and Gwent Police say they are continuing to support him, alongside staff at the school, as the criminal investigation continues.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "Officers have made a third arrest in connection with an investigation into the assault of a schoolboy in Lliswerry.

"Yesterday (Wednesday 14 May), Gwent Police was made aware of a video circulating online of an assault on a footbridge over Spytty Road, Newport.

"We identified the boy in the video and continue to support him as we investigate.

"Last night, our enquiries led to the arrest of 30 year-old man and 13-year-old boy from Cwmbran.

"This evening, we have also arrested an 11 year-old boy from Newport on suspicion of common assault and affray.

Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend said: "The vast majority of the public have been extremely supportive and have provided timely and helpful information to help our investigation to this point.

"We now believe we have identified the majority of those we suspect to have played a part in this incident, and are working at pace to bring these people in for questioning.

"Nevertheless, everyone needs to consider the tone and language they use when posting on social media.

"We would encourage people not to speculate or identify anyone online thought to be involved as this is a live investigation, and such comments can have an impact on our ability to bring anyone found to have committed a criminal offence to justice."

Friends of a 15-year-old boy who died after he jumped from a pier into the sea at a Welsh beach had been “egging him on”, an inquest has heard. David Ejimofor died on Monday, June 19, 2023, after he’d jumped from the high pier alongside friends at Aberavon's small beach near the Victoria Road car park in Port Talbot.

The inquest being held at Swansea Coroners’ Court heard how David, who was a gifted weightlifter and track athlete but couldn’t swim well, had told his friends on the day that he wasn’t confident he would be able to swim if he jumped into the water but, according to eyewitness fisherman Luke McDonald who was a couple of hundred yards away from the group of teenagers, his friends shouted words to the effect of: “Come on – jump in. You’ll be fine. It’s not deep.”

When the St Joseph’s Comprehensive School boy, who had been celebrating the end of exam season on the day he died, jumped into the water he immediately began “thrashing about”, Mr McDonald said in a statement read to the court by coroner Edward Ramsay. The court heard how, after David's phone was looked into by police, he'd searched on Google terms such as "what shorts to wear for swimming" and "how long can I swim after eating" on the afternoon before his death.

Mr McDonald said in his statement: “There were around eight or nine boys in total. I could hear one boy say he couldn’t swim and he didn’t seem sure about going in. He was well-built with dark dreadlocks and I think he had black swim shorts.

“All the boys other than him jumped into the sea. He was still standing on the pier. I remember them egging him on. They were saying words to the effect of: ‘Come on – jump in. You’ll be fine. It’s not deep.’

“I then saw him jump in. He was not pushed or forced in. As he jumped in I was watching to make sure he was okay as I heard him say he couldn’t swim. I saw thrashing around a bit. I saw some others grab him and keep him afloat. He looked like he had support. I turned back to my fishing rod. I then heard them say they couldn’t see him. I heard someone shout: ‘I can’t see Dave.’”

Detective sergeant Simon Davies, who interviewed those involved, concluded two of the boys with David had counted down to zero before jumping from the pier. They had then encouraged David to jump. DS Davies told the coroner all of the witnesses said David "appeared to be anxious and nervous" prior to jumping.

A number of people rushed to the boy’s aid including some of his friends who struggled to hold him up out of the water. The court had heard how David, who had gone viral on TikTok for his weightlifting prowess, was heavier than a typical 15-year-old and had a bodybuilder’s diet. One teenager who had been trying to help David stay out of the water was physically “exhausted”, the inquest heard.

A number of paddleboarders and swimmers rushed to rescue David from the water with the help of a life ring which had been thrown into the water from the pier. Tyler Rowland, an off-duty police officer at the beach paddleboarding at the time, told the court he saw around seven teens in the distance in the water close to the pier.

Minutes later detective constable Rowland said he “saw a commotion involving the teens I’d previously seen”. He said he could see “two or three of them heading towards the shore while the remainder of the group were halfway out at the pier”. DC Rowland said: “I remember hearing one of them say: ‘He’s gone.’ I paddled towards them and some of them told me someone had gone under the water and hadn’t come up.

“Two or three of the boys, aged around 15 and 16, were in the water and were shaken up and treading water. One of them said something like: ‘He’s a big boy and he can’t swim.’ They were in real panic. A teenage girl was screaming at them: ‘Look for him, look for him.’

“I took a breath and dived straight down. I felt the floor and realised it was not as deep as I thought. I came back up to take another breath and try again. One of the teenagers was also diving down as well.

“I dived down and was searching the floor with my hands. It was completely dark and I couldn’t see anything. My hands hit what I thought was a rock at first. I then was convinced it was the top of an arm. I was on the sea floor at this point and the male was flat on the seabed.

“I put my arms under his armpits and put my feet to the seabed and pushed up with all my strength off the floor. He was very heavy and not moving at all.

“We put the ring over his head and put his arms out of the ring either side. He was completely limp and kept sliding out of the ring. He was motionless. I told the boys: ‘Grab the ring and swim as far as you can.’ They were exhausted.”

Katie Morgan was training in the water at Aberavon at the time for an upcoming Ironman event alongside her husband Neil and friends Ian and Amy Saunders and Barry Gregory. She said she saw DC Rowland and a teenager trying desperately to swim out of the water while holding David who was inside the ring. “I could see the male being held up was unconscious,” she said. “We got him onto the sand area and a few others pulled him further up the beach. Amy, a nurse, and the off-duty police officer (DC Rowland) started giving chest compressions. Another two police officers arrived and then paramedics arrived.”

Police constable Lewis Evans and police constable Gethin Horler-Clee told the court they arrived when David and eyewitnesses were knee-deep in the water. The officers helped take David further up the beach as the tide was coming in before placing him on a paddleboard and delivering further compressions and using a defibrillator.

PC Horler-Clee said he took a number of eyewitness statements. To his knowledge at the time “friends had jumped into the water and David followed them in doing so despite not being able to swim”.

Paramedic Barry Edwards said according to witness reports David had been under the water for 10 minutes. He said two shocks were administered using the defibrillator and advanced life support was provided at the scene before David was pronounced dead at 8.05pm.

Swansea University pathologist Dr Williams noted: “Witnesses say all males except for David were completing a series of jumps from the pier. Two of the males shouted to David join them and he said he wasn’t a good swimmer. They explained they would help him. When David jumped into the water they began to assist him and they were being pulled below water. Members of the public had become aware and a life ring was thrown to David and members of the public began to dive down to try and retrieve him. He was brought to the surface and placed on a paddleboard while CPR was commenced. Despite the efforts by all involved he was declared deceased at the scene." Dr Williams advised a medical cause of death as 1A: drowning.

David's parents Maria and Alex Ejimofor arrived at the beach before they were conveyed alongside their son to Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. Ms Ejimofor told the court her son wasn’t a strong swimmer and she and her family were “shocked” to hear he had jumped into the water from the pier.

“We would frequently go to the beach as a family,” she said. “I never saw him paddle further than up to his knees or thighs. He was not a risk-taker. He would not put his head in the open water. He was fully aware that he was not the strongest of swimmers. He was particularly cautious around open water.”

Paying tribute to David she said he was a “bright and curious soul who always had a smile on his face”. She added: “He was honest, caring, intelligent, polite, independent, hardworking, full of life, respectful, and a beautiful young boy who had achieved so much in his 15 years. David was a beacon of positivity and resilience. He brought joy and laughter and his memory will remain in the hearts of those fortunate to have known him. His spirit inspires us to find strength in the most difficult moments.”

As well as being an avid weightlifter with a big social media following around that David was a highly skilled 100m sprinter as well as excelling in long jump, high jump, and shot put. He had also performed well at school, particularly in French and maths, and he played the piano with “melodies which touched our hearts”, his mother said. The inquest continues on Tuesday.

A woman who stabbed her partner to death has been jailed for life. Joanna Katarzyna Wronska, 51, of Pentre Gwyn, Wrexham, must serve a minimum term of 15 years and four months, a judge said.

Wronska stabbed Marcin Koziol to death in a "drunken temper" at their home in Pentre Gwyn before washing the knife in the kitchen sink. At Mold Crown Court today, the judge His Honour Rhys Rowlands told Wronska she had been extremely drunk and it had been a "momentary, explosive loss of temper on your part".

Judge Rowlands said: "It goes without saying this was a tragic loss of a man's life and a dreadful waste of your immediate future."

Dressed in a grey top under a smart black suit, Wronska showed no reaction as the sentence was handed down.

During an earlier hearing, the judge described the attack as "cruel and unnecessary". The defendant had denied the killing in October 2023, insisting that her 40-year-old victim had previously self-harmed and attempted suicide.

But after a nine-day trial held in April, a jury of six men and six women at Mold Crown Court returned a unanimous verdict of guilty. At the time, the judge said: "I have no doubt that drink is at the root of your problems."

The jury had heard that another previous partner of Wronska, Januse Zdunek, claimed she had stabbed him several years ago and that she had allegedly told him he was "lucky she hadn't stabbed him in his heart".

In the case involving her late partner Mr Koziol, emergency crews were called to Wronksa's home in Pentre Gwyn in Caia Park, Wrexham on October 23, 2023 at about 6.15pm.

Prosecutor Andrew Thomas KC said the defendant had made a 999 call claiming her partner had "injured himself with a knife".

Police arrived at their first floor flat and found Mr Koziol naked and bleeding on the bed. He died from a single stab wound, with the knife having pierced his left upper chest for 15cm, at 7.15pm.

It cut into his heart and penetrated his left lung. He suffered severe sudden blood loss from which he died. Mr Thomas told the jury the case had "all the hallmarks of the tragic consequences of a drunken argument".

Police found a large "freshly washed" 20cm-long knife in the kitchen sink with dimensions consistent with the wound.

Mr Thomas said: "The single issue is, did she do it?... If she did stab Mr Koziol this was murder and nothing less."

The court heard that by October 2023 the couple - Wronska and Mr Koziol - had been living a "chaotic" lifestyle and living off state benefits.

They had a volatile relationship and both had been barred from the Premier Shop on Abenbury Road for drunkenness and shoplifting.

On October 23 a friend Piotr Kielar went to Wronska's flat. Wronska and Mr Koziol were both drunk and naked. They dressed and they all went to a shop so their friend could buy alcohol and all returned to the flat. CCTV shows Mr Kielar returning to the shop for a second time to buy vodka.

They allegedly went back to the flat and Mr Kielar claims he saw a large knife in the living room. Mr Kielar left. Some 43 minutes later Wronska rang 999.

She said her partner had "taken a knife". She said to the operator, in a recording played to the jury: "My partner dead...please help me now." She then said "Marcin, Marcin, Marcin" over and over again then she said "gone". She may have meant he had fallen unconscious, said the prosecutor.

Police arrived and saw her socks "were contaminated with blood", Mr Thomas said. The knife was in the kitchen sink and was 20cm long and 2.5cm wide, the court heard.

She accepted she was alone in the property in Pentre Gwyn with Marcin at the time he died. She said she heard snoring but it suddenly stopped.

Wronska said she went into the bedroom to check on Marcin who was "sitting on the bed". She claimed he said: "I love you" but she saw "a pool of dark blood" on the floor and became frightened.

She claimed she told Marcin to lie on the bed and rang police. She was "in shock". Wronska claimed Marcin had tried to take his own life several times in the past. She claimed he was the "love of her life" and that she would never hurt him.

She denied being angry because Marcin had been drinking, denied having an argument with Marcin herself, had no idea how his T-shirt became ripped and said she didn't know how the knife came to be in the sink.

But a Home Office forensic pathologist Dr Brian Rodgers said it was "highly unusual" to sever your own ribs when stabbing yourself. The prosecutor Mr Thomas said her actions, in removing the knife and washing, strongly suggested she stabbed Mr Koziol and tried to hide the evidence of her involvement.

Speaking following sentencing today, Detective Chief Inspector Eleri Thomas said: “Joanna Wronska senselessly and needlessly ended Marcin Koziol’s life – her partner who she claimed she loved deeply. It was a cruel and violent attack on a man who had sought support from her.

Paedophile couple's sick messages were intercepted by the FBI and now they face a long time in prison

A judge told Ann Bray and Jonathan Leonard they had been 'paedophiles in a relationship that thrived on abuse' and that the text messages between them provided a 'window into the warped and perverted world you inhabited together'

Ann Bray and Jonathan Leonard have been given an extended jail term

A sick couple filmed themselves sexually abusing a young girl and "revelled" in what they were doing, a court has heard. Ann Bray and Jonathan Leonard groomed the child, then Bray "instructed" the child and guided her in what to do with her partner Leonard.

Bray filmed the abuse on her phone and later sent the footage to her partner. The couple also discussed what they were doing in extensive text conversations, with some of the messages ending with "LOL" or "laugh out loud".

A judge at Cardiff Crown Court told the defendants they had been "paedophiles in a relationship that thrived on child sexual abuse". He said Bray had used the girl as a "sex object" to satisfy the wishes of Leonard but had also participated in the abuse for her own sexual gratification.

The judge said it was clear from everything he had read and heard about the defendants that they posed a grave risk to children who they come into contact with and that they required extended sentences as dangerous offenders.

Georgina Buckley, prosecuting, told the court that the offending came when the FBI intercepted indecent images which Leonard had sent to other people, and the Americans contacted law enforcement agencies in the UK.

The defendants were arrested in September 2024 and their phones were seized, and the court heard that it was the examination of those devices and the videos and texts they contained which led to the discovery of the abuse.

The court heard that the investigation found that the defendants had subjected a young girl to a series of sexual assaults since 2021, including the oral rape of the young girl by Leonard.

One of the videos showed Bray pouring liquid chocolate over her partner's penis before the oral penetration took place. The court heard that on the videos Bray could be heard "instructing" the child on what to do and how to do it. On occasions the abuse lasted for around 90 minutes at a time.

The prosecutor said Bray would later send the videos she had filmed to Leonard, and the couple also engaged in text chats where they would discuss what the had done, talk about their sexual fantasies, and make plans for what they wanted to do to the girl in the future. A number of the messages between them were accompanied by "LOL" or "laugh out loud".

A haul of indecent images unrelated to the victim of the abuse was also found on the defendants' phones.

The court heard that after the FBI intercepted Leonard sending indecent images to a third party the UK's National Crime Agency became involved and the defendants were arrested.

Leonard answered "no comment" to all questions asked in his interview while Bray told officers she was in a "casual sexual relationship" with Leonard and said they had moved to south Wales some five or six years previously. She told officers that after moving to Wales she worked as a sex worker.

In impact statements from the victim and her mother which were read to the court by the prosecutor they both set out the devastating impact the abuse has had on them.

Ann Bray, 62, of Brigantine Grove, Newport, had previously pleaded guilty to causing or inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity, distributing indecent images of children, making indecent images of children, arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence, aiding and abetting the rape of a child, sexual activity with a child, aiding and abetting sexual assault, possession of indecent images of a child, and possessing an extreme pornographic image when he returned to the dock for sentencing.

Jonathan Michael Leonard, 58, of no fixed abode but of the Caldicot area, had previously pleaded guilty to engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a girl, distributing indecent images of children, making indecent images of children, rape, sexual assault, sexual activity with a child, causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, penetrative sexual activity with a child, possession of indecent photographs of a child, and possessing an extreme pornographic image when appeared in the dock alongside Bray.

The court heard both defendants have a limited number of previous convictions on their records but none are of a sexual nature.

Nigel Fryer, for Bray, said that since being interviewed for her pre-sentence report in March his client had further reflected on her behaviour and she was "devastated at the situation" and expressed her remorse for the impact of her actions. He said he would not seek to try to explain the behaviour of his client as to attempt to do so would "simply insult" the complainant in the case.

Emma Harris, for Leonard, said the best and only mitigation her client had were his guilty pleas. She said that in a letter the defendant had written to court he had demonstrated his remorse including how "deeply sorry" he was for the impact of his offending on the complainant, on the complainant's family, and on his own family.

Judge Paul Hobson told the defendants that at the time of the offending they had been "two paedophiles in a relationship that thrived on child sexual abuse", and he said it was clear from text conversations between them that they "revelled" in what they had done to their victim.

The judge described the pair's text messages as a "window into the warped and perverted world you inhabited together" and noted they were both now trying to cast blame for what happened on the other defendant.

He told Bray she had used the girl as a "sex object to satisfy the wishes of your boyfriend" but had also planned and participated in the abuse for her own sexual gratification.

The judge said it was clear that both Bray and Leonard had a wider sexual interest in children and he said he had no doubt they pose a grave risk to children who they may come into contact with and that extended sentences were necessary.

With discounts for their guilty pleas the defendants were each given 23-year extended sentences comprising 15 years in prison followed by an eight-year extended sentence.

The defendants must serve two-thirds of the custodial element of their sentences before they can apply for release but it will be for the Parole Board to determine if they are safe to be let out. Both defendants will be registered sex offenders for the rest of their lives.

Speaking after the sentencing NCA senior investigating officer Daniel Waywell said: "Leonard and Bray worked together to support one another's sexual interest in children, subjecting a child to years of horrific abuse, which they filmed and shared online with other paedophiles.

"This child, and every one of the victims of abuse in the indecent images and videos found on their devices, are re-victimised each time this material is viewed and shared online. The NCA is committed to safeguarding children from sexual abuse and we will continue to work tirelessly, alongside international partners, to remove children from harm and bring offenders like Leonard and Bray to justice."

Hopefully @Joseph Stalin will be warming up the helicopter for this latest assignment.

Top officials at council which employed paedophile head 'absent from work'

Cyngor Gwynedd's chief executive said there were "short-term arrangements in place" to lead its children and family support department
Senior officers at the council which employed paedophile headteacher Neil Foden are "absent from work", BBC News has been told.

An email sent to Gwynedd councillors by the authority's chief executive stated there were arrangements in place to lead its children and family support department while the head and deputy head are absent.

Foden, 66, was imprisoned for 17 years in July last year, for sexually abusing young girls over a four-year period.

He was head of one Gwynedd school and strategic head of another when he was arrested, and was later convicted of 19 charges.

The charges included 12 counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of sexual activity with a child while he was in a position of trust.

In the email from Chief Executive Dafydd Gibbard, seen by BBC-produced Newyddion S4C, all 69 Gwynedd councillors were told it was "unlikely we will be able to return to our normal arrangements for a while".

Both absent senior officers were named in the letter, along with their titles and information about the staff stepping up into the roles.

However, it does not state why they are not in their posts at present.

Cyngor Gwynedd declined to reveal the details surrounding the absences, stating that "short-term arrangements have been put in place to lead the department".

Sharron Carter and Aled Gibbard will be "sharing the responsibilities of the head of the children and family support department", Mr Gibbard wrote, with Dylan Owen, the council's corporate director, supporting the two temporary leaders whilst continuing to "provide strategic guidance to the department".

Genevieve Woods, a specialist safeguarding barrister, was commissioned by the council earlier this year to investigate events in 2019, when concerns were raised with the authority about Foden's behaviour with some teenage girls.

She revealed her findings in mid-March, with Cyngor Gwynedd saying in April that because the report contained "sensitive and confidential information" it would not yet be made public.

During Foden's trial, it emerged that in 2019, a senior member of staff was concerned about his "close relationship" with some teenage girls, although the concerns had been for Foden's own reputation and that he could be putting himself at risk of accusations.

The concerns were shared with Cyngor Gwynedd, but the court heard that a decision was made not to investigate further.

BBC Wales understands four members of staff were part of the decision not to investigate at the time, and a BBC Wales Investigates programme into the case revealed three of those were still employed by the council.

Councillors have been told a number of recommendations, and associated actions, are in place following Ms Woods' report.

These include that the council will put in place arrangements for dealing with concerns which do not reach the formal child safeguarding threshold, as well as strengthening whistleblowing and record keeping arrangements, and providing safeguarding training to all council staff.

The full report has been sent to the independent investigators of the statutory Child Practice Review, which is being carried out by North Wales Safeguarding Board.

Cyngor Gwynedd said it had received "legal advice from independent experts on the next steps".

It added: "As a responsible employer, Gwynedd Council has a responsibility to respect the confidentiality of staff. Because of this, we cannot share information relating to the employment of individuals."

A request for comment has been passed on to the absent staff members through Cyngor Gwynedd.
