It's a good question and well, pooners are women and Heated Rivalry is a bog standard gay romance written by women for women which has existed in that form for decades and you can find hundreds of similar books on Amazon (I guess the author was just lucky she got picked for a TV series). "Queer as Folk" (the original British as well as US version, which I think were both by Russell T Davies) was released around 2000 and that was a different time (so I doubt you will find many women citing it as their "this made me realize I was a man" moment) and that show was by gay men for gay men. I'm sure women watched it too back then, but it didn't have the same appeal as Heated Rivalry does. Again, Heated Rivalry depicts a relationship that appeals to women and I do not think Queer as Folk focused on that. So I doubt any pooners who think they identify with Heated Rivalry would say the same about QaF.

I think there's a huge difference between watching something and being obsessed with it. The truth is that Heated Rivalry is successful because it emulates a female / male dynamic. It's bordering on academic, but I don't know that they're worshiping homosexuality per se – a lot of these girls spout quite virulent homophobic slurs and insults when they're rejected by actual gay men – but "queerness" as an abstract concept, as you say.
