Do we really need a new reboot?

  • Yeah, I think it's about that time

  • No, the franchise is dead.

  • NO, A FOLLOWUP WHERE LARA PREACHES BOUT SLAY QUEEN DEFEATING EVIL ORANGE MAN

  • who cares, square enix killed another franchise

I liked the first game in the reboot series, but after that I dropped all interest. I don't think we ever saw Reboot!Laura dual wield pistols or anything, did we? Unless my memory fails me.
that's because they don't know how to make the duals work with their "realistic" ots combat. Same about their refusal to include shorts even as an option because it's apparently "sexualizing" her. It's especially bizarre in shadow which takes place in a jungle and you can see some npcs wearing shorts. But Lara can't, she has to carry 50 tribal dresses no one fucking liked

Edit: 2013 at least felt like something new at the time. The other two basically repeat the same shit and so you have Lara learning the exact same skills over and over again. Although Rise to me seemed like the most balanced game out of the three. Shadow punishes you for not doing stealth.

Last boss battle we saw her do it, then never again.
It's sad that the dual pistols in the reboot trilogy (and in the 2018 film) is the equivalent to the breast cancer arc in The Room. They forget that the dual pistols were an important part of the entire series (even mid-to-late 2000s era Croft still remember to use her dual pistols as an important piece of the games). It'll be like if the new Max Payne games didn't implement bullet time or Sonic the Hedgehog not going fast nor collecting rings anymore. Although the latter doesn't sound surprising, but still.

lol even Kotaku wants the "bad and sexualized" Lara back

When Kotaku makes an article about how old Lara was cool and how they missed her, that's when you know Squeenix done fucked up.

That sounds to me like they aren't trying to be creative. Max Payne 3 opted for a more grounded approach to its shooting (as grounded as you could possibly make Max Payne anyway) and even that got away with making dual-wielding look realistic while also keeping it fun. If that game could do it, I don't see why they couldn't for the Reboot Raider series.

Unfortunately when you start from a flawed premise of "Let's make Lara Croft gritty and realistic" you can't really improve matters from there. Not when she's infamous for her shameless quips, athleticism, and talent with weaponry, just like a male action hero.

I'll say that Eidos and Crystal Dynamics DID end up making a more realistic version of the character, except done right (prior to the Nu-Raider trilogy), and it's the mid-2000s era consisting of Legends, Anniversary, and Underworld. They did a much better job fleshing out Croft's dead mother, having the gameplay be just as fun as the classic era (with the dual pistols being useful, having more tombs to raid, and even a backstory about her rival Jacquielle.) This is something the Nu-Raider trilogy and the 2018 film reboot forget. It's not just that she's an archeologist with dead parents, but has dual pistols and tomb raiding being useful to the games. And it's nice that Max Payne 3, while being the most grounded and realistic in the series (which kinda says something), didn't divorce itself from what made the first two Max Payne games great, yet the new Tomb Raiders forgot all about what made the games great. It's as dumb as Sonic the Hedgehog's new games being way too self-aware and being more for children as oppose to just focusing on the gameplay (I'm talking to you, Boom, Lost World and Forces).

I, along with other people, pictured Lara Croft as what Ripley was in the Alien films. Two of which being action-packed male heroes than being typical girl power.

yeah, I miss when Lara could hop around while shooting.
Wish they took nots from Capcom,
DMC5 combined photorealistic graphics with stylized acrobatics and combat that would fit TR perfectly.
Every single action game now has over-the-shoulder combat, it's honestly boring.
And I'm sick of the effing bow! Every single strong female character has to have it now for some reason.

Eidos would've taken notes from Capcom have they not been purchased by Squeenix. Remember how Thief was ruined by Squeenix and so too was Croft herself. I know I keep saying this, but hey, at least Agent 47 had to move to a different developer and/or publisher at the right time. I may predict that Eidos would change ownership from Squeenix to Microsoft in the future. I mean the latter bought Bethesda before it could get ruined some more, so hey maybe Eidos and its IPs are next.

The Hunger Games.

It also pushed archery to the mainstream, at least around here. Even our public schools have archery teams now.

In my play through of the 2013 Tomb Raider the bow + flaming arrows almost felt like cheating. You could pretty much take any bad guy out except a boss with a flaming arrow due to the fire damage.

Avengers tanked HARD
ouch, indeed

As for the dual pistols and tank tops, the question is not "if" but "when". Classic Lara wasn't exactly dead, she was just relegated to spinoff titles and mobile games, but the merchandise with her image have been selling extremely well. Another collector statue's been announced just recently. Even the temple of osiris model, as you can notice, has reboot's Lara features, so they aren't entirely against putting her into shorts.

Whether they like to admit it or not, the reboot failed to make a cultural impact or establish its own identity and considering the recent trend for the nostalgic remakes Squeenix can't ignore the public demand forever.

Edit: stole these from trf:

I'm wondering how people who primarily know Lara through the new trilogy would react if the series was rebooted again in a way that more closely matched the style and gameplay of the original games. Would they accept it? Would the games still sell?
I'm still pondering more about what the original creator Toby Guard has to say on this situation. Not just his thoughts on your questions but how would he react to the new trilogy or the 2018 film.

I don't mind realistic Lara, granted I've only played the first of the rebooted games and people say it went down hill after that.

I mean sure it's more combat oriented, but I think to some extent that's what the market demands after the Uncharted franchise.

I don't see it as a bad thing, but I agree some more plat former elements wouldn't be bad.

I'm not even opposed to the slim cargo pants, tank top, boots look. It's still sexy but practical. I wouldn't mind the shorts outfit either though.

Honestly, it doesn't matter which version of Lara you prefer. If you're a presumed straight male gamer who just finds Lara attractive - God help your soul (the faggots at tombraiderforum test my patience daily).
Just play the games and have fun. Rise is okay if you liked TR2013, it's basically the same shit with better graphics. Ignore Shadow.

By realistic, I mean the stuff within the realm of human endurance that she did in the 2013 game.

Not the bizarre facial structure changes they made to the #2 and #3 in the reboot franchise.

I don't really understand the trend of making women ugly in video games.

If you make them pretty, the Influencers on social media get mad because they can't make the game something about themselves because they can't even do a single pushup....

or they're men wearing a dress.

not to mention the bizzare fetish for extreme muscle mass a la Shrek-Hulk that no woman could achieve realistically on her own (seriously, fuck you Druckmann)
