I remember at the time, everyone felt that the movie wasn't going to be the finale but more like a setup for an actual finale. I think a lot of people figured they'd finally put an end to it once they made it to 20 seasons since they would've matched Gunsmoke in terms of how many seasons it ran.
They also matched Law & Order, the original series, I don't count the multiple spin-offs. As for a Simpsons sequel, I presume it'll be a final showdown between Bart and Sideshow Bob?

matt actually had a lot of weird ideas for the "finale" of the show back when he thought it'd only last a year or so (oh matt you so innocent back then) like marge was supposed to be an alien and her huge hair was hiding a bair of big rabbit ears, or the show would end with the world ending but at the last minute something makes time reset to the very first scene from Simpsons roasting on an open fire. actually that would explain how the show can have dates like 93, 96, 2000 ,05 2012, but nobody ages.

watching Season 11 ep 13 Saddlesore Galactica (the horse racing one)
I was surprised to realize it was so old that Maude was still alive and Clinton was still president.
edit - next was the one where Maude dies

I remember Saddlesore very well, as it was the first Simpsons episode I saw that I truly despised. I know it was never a show grounded in reality, but magical elf jockeys was like a rejected South Park episode.

Cecil, no civilization in history has ever considered chief hydrological engineering a calling

....

Yes yes the Cappadocians, fine

Tonight on Fox's Thousand Dollar Movie, it's Roger Corman's Titanic!
I'm legit surprised corman didn't try to make a cash in on titanic. Granted even by 97 the man was getting up there in years...he did produce Sharktopus in 2010 age isn't gonna slow him down.

Anyway to stay on topic

The sad thing is that compared to the crap thats being put out by the show today, Saddlesore is a laugh riot. The plots a mess and at times it feels like the writers are spitting in the face of the audience, but there are actual jokes and funny scenes. Even when the plots gone off the rails with the jockey elves I'm still laughing at some of the scenes. Really shows just how far the show has fallen when I'm looking at what was once rock bottom with rose tinted glasses.

Thats gotta be one of the more obscure jokes the show has done because unless you're a fan of B movies or MS3K type shows the name Roger Corman is going to mean nothing to you. Still I'd rather watch something by Corman than current episodes.

iirc Corman had a revival of sorts around that time with a deal with Showtime doing new crap like Black Scorpion (the chick in black leather, not the giant monster) and reboots of some of his old crap, like I think Teenage Caveman? I might be conflating two 90s runs of Corman but he still had gas in the tank around Titanic for sure
