Yeah Family Guy had the benefit of knowing that their fight scenes are actually funny so the Trump one was sort of funny especially with how over the top Trump and Peter acted.
The other thing is that in the 90s the political jokes were fairly evenhanded. They poked fun at liberal talking points such as universal healthcare and welfare. Sure, the show leaned left, but it wasn't in-your-face nor was it insulting people on the other side of the political aisle.
