I wish the show didn’t out Smithers. In fact, I don’t like it when gay characters in general are outed, mostly because it makes them become nothing but being gay. When they’re not completely out, they’re able to be more than just being gay.

It's almost always more fun to read between the lines than be told something plainly. Smithers secret gayness was an open secret that just worked. It was a great source of humor unlike him being out. Most of his gays jokes were not even about him being gay but him gay for Mr Burns specifically.

Remember when he was just "Burns-sexual"? I miss the days when Smithers was-quite-good-at-turning-him-on, or when he had a dream where they fly in through the window...

The staff thought it would be a bad optics for Mr.Burns personal slave to be a black guy. He was designed originally as a white guy but they tried him out as black when the show aired then just put him back due to that.
 
It got weird when he went from sycophant to gay for Burns. But then it got really weird with the retcon that Burns was a father figure to Smithers after his father died.
 
I always thought him and Burns were supposed to be a Robocop reference, and the unblacking of him just made it less obvious to everyone.

Reminded when Lou was "white" in the first season too. They really were feeling their way with these characters.
