I still think that episode is one of the worst in the golden years. The Front is one of the better ones but people hate it for some odd ball reason.
beyond the MUH JEWS idea, I can see how it dips a little into what would become the Family Guy style "here is a joke that exists because a joke" cul-de-sacs divorced from the larger work

The episode with Krusty's dad is one part desperate emmy bait episode and one part worldbuilding.

It's the direct sequel to the episode where Bart saves Krusty from jail (and IIRC comes before Sideshow Bob makes his first return) and gives us a huge bit of early in the show run info-dump about Krusty's past. Which was kind of big as Krusty had a ton of lore behind him and his past/career that was only available in shit like Simpsons Illustrated (a magazine about the show and which had a TON of behind the scenes stuff in it for it's five quarterly issues).

The Front has two good plot ideas but doesnt really do much with either of them
Also, Meyers is voiced by Hank Azaria instead of Alex Rocco, and just sounds like a high-pitched Moe as a result.

Plus, the whole nameplate joke loses all impact the second time when they blatantly recycle the footage. Petty, I know, but the lip flaps don't even slightly match and it goes from dark to light to dark again.

On a more positive note, Rocco was so good as Meyers. I love the scene where Krusty yells at him because Itchy and Scratchy is getting shit ratings. As brash, arrogant and abusive as he is, he's still beholden to Krusty, who is himself beholden to the network. It's an interesting dynamic and I wish we could have seen them interact more.

In my case, I honestly remember I gradually "grew out" of watching The Simpsons sometime during the late '90s, it just wasn't appealing to me.
I started getting annoyed with the "crappingly new" episodes sometime by the later '00s. They felt "off" compared to older good ones.

To much screen pulling that I didn't like and the jokes were either a polite heh to falling flat.
Just like the chart @Ahriman posted in that post I quoted, I think the show peaked around season 5-ish, started to decline around 10-ish. After was when it started sucking.

This basically means season three was the season where there wasn’t a bad episode in the bunch and I agree with that. I still think season four was the best but season three was consistently strong.

i'd like to see an update of this list. plus for them to list what the outlier and worst episodes actually are by name and desc.

for me it was seasons 5&6. seasons 2-4 are great TV, but at the point of 5&6 they essentially made it a wackier programme while remaining clever and somewhat grounded. seasons 2-4 are brilliant sitcom television and an evolution of what s1 set out to do and succeeded at revolutionizing, but i've said before i feel seasons 7&8 arent nearly as funny and are mostly just weird for the sake of weird and oddly uncomfortable. still well written, but that's what makes it so odd: the episodes are consistently compelling but not consistently funny like seasons 1-6

The Front at least gives us grandpa's famous "ps I am not a crackpot" line.
And taking a swipe at John K.

I was pretty sure of this, so I went and checked, and for the most part, the singular negative episodes for those seasons were the clip shows. Here's a list:
  • Season 4: episode 18, "So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show" (clip show, obviously)
  • Season 5: episode 21, "Lady Bouvier's Lover" (a weak episode about characters people don't care much about)
  • Season 6: episode 3: "Another Simpsons Clip Show" (again, obviously)
  • Season 7: episode 10: "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular" (also a clip show, but more tolerable thanks to the Troy McClure wraparounds)
  • Season 8: episode 24: "The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase" (not a clip show, but a non-standard episode making fun of spin-offs)
And then in season 9, the lower-rated episodes are episode 2, "The Principal and the Pauper" (don't even need to explain why this one is disliked); episode 11, "All Singing, All Dancing" (probably the worst clip show because it's just musical numbers); and episode 15, "The Last Temptation of Krust" (no opinion on this one). After that, season 10 is nearly evenly split between green and yellow, and then it's all downhill from there.

So I think it's safe to say that everything from seasons 3-8 are good when the only negatives of many of those seasons are the clip shows. Even the seasons that didn't have clip shows only have slightly weaker than normal episodes.

Looks like that first sort of sucky episode was "Another Simpsons Clip Show" (S6E3) and then that very first "Worst. Episode. Ever." was "All Singing, All Dancing" (S9E11).

On the other hand, the 1st really good episode was "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish" (S2E11). And then the last really good episode was "Trilogy of Error" (S12E18)?

I would say this is the only acceptable clip show. Not only are the Troy McClure bits funny, the clips themselves are pretty fair. Many are actually never seen footage either from cut jokes or extra material made for Who shoot Mr Burns. Even the seen stuff is well chosen. Tracy Ullman show pits that many hadn't seen and brief moments as new joke set ups or pay offs. Clip shows suck but this is pretty much the best case possible.

I agree. I like that episode they make fun of the writers, and overall its just fun.

Plus it has NRA4EVER, and jokes that right wing stuff is sprinkled through the Simpsons

Where I'm living now there's cable (I never get it myself) and it means I'm seeng newer episodes re-running. It's almost sad how strained the voices are now, youtube parodies sound more genuine.

If I could give any compliment thought, some newer episodes are actually doing proper animation which is nice to see after so long of episodes just looking like they were made in beginners toonboom,

Troy: Yes, the Simpsons have come a long way since an old drunk made
humans out of his rabbit characters to pay off his gambling debts.
Who knows what adventures they'll have between now and the time
the show becomes unprofitable?
