I'm just wondering what would happen to NIS if they ever lost Falcom like they did with Spike Chunsoft.

Internationally their most consistent releases are falcom games.

Disgaea games are some of the grindiest of grindfests imaginable and it's a toss up if you like them or not. Soul Nomad is really good.
If you don't care about spoiling yourself on the best way to do things efficiently then they're not THAT bad.

But really the Disgaea games are two games in one. The story mode is an enjoyable SRPG that remains fairly challenging all the way through as long as you're not going out of your way to grind, and then the postgame is a challenge in figuring out how to be as efficient with your time as possible making yourself ludicrously overpowered.

How about Vol 2? sorry I'm just curious what you guys think
I don't recognize the second game in vol 2. Also I hear Sandy Fox and Yuri Lowenthal....I like it

Speaking of Ys, I was never able to finish Lacrimosa due to unfortunate circumstances (flood) and I never looked at Origins or Memories of Celetia or Istrum Nox.

origins looks like a dungeon crawler (no towns and things) and MoC looks like a beat em up jrpg with no towns either...bit odd camera angle though?

ok I confess I dislike not having towns or central hubs you can walk around and talk to people in....(I know I know I'm trash)

Do you have to have a general idea of what is going on with Disgaea or can you jump right in? I assume they give you no bios

Origin plays like an earlier Ys game, it's also prone to bugs and crashes in all versions. However the game is, you select one of the 3 initial characters and the whole game is based around climbing to the top of one big huge tower and that's the whole game. Origins is also not a NIS title, it's DotEmu.

MoC keeps the scaled out camera of previous Ys games, but it does have towns and quest hubs. In fact a large part of the game is uncovering 100% of the map so there are loads of places to explore and discover stuff.

Monstrum Nox plays like 8, however exploration is far more vertical. The beginning areas are all about exploring the city(and it's a big city), but eventually you are let out into the wilds to find dungeons and other locations. It's pretty good, I thought I would like it less than 8 but it's around the same. Every chapter is about you getting to know a singular party member better. Instead of building up a village this time you get additions to your hideout which doubles as a bar.

Zhp is a psp game that is pretty much rougelite superhero disgaea
Very fun game

Their IS a central hub in Disgaea/Phantom Brave, it is just small and mostly serves to have shops, recruitment, skill learning, and whatever other autistic mechanics NIS introduced. Soul Nomad, to my recollection has no hub though and is just a world map with points to go to which are effectively the maps. It is decently colorful and characterized, but it is still small and their isn't much to really see after awhile beyond seeing a handful of random NPCs say usually quirky dialogue.

These games tend to have plenty of characters, but it is solely done as the story requires and NIS adds a lot of random as fuck characters of varying degrees of plot importance so if you just like seeing weird randos you'll see plenty of that. Disgaea 3 for example has literally 3 mexican brothers who talk exactly the way you think they will, just they are boar demon people with clubs, these character just exist because...plot? This game would have had a hatebase if people actually remembered it existed in current year, solely for these 3 random characters who do almost nothing but be a stereotype because reasons.

Makai Kingdom is probably the weakest in the Disgaea-like lineup. It is saved by having very fun plot.
ZHP is one of the better roguelite I played, it helps that the game expects you to die and you get stronger each run. Also personally I always like the japanese superhero theme.

Should have put more resources into getting those Trails games out faster over here rather than a Ys 8 PS5 version. Though I suppose that's more of a Falcom spearheaded thing.

That Trails PSP game that plays like Ys is getting a translation as well, right? Definitely curious to see how that plays. Love my Trails, but sometimes I need a break from these 90 hour monsters.

Yes both PSP crossbell arc titles are getting released.

Zetta (the main MC) is also played by Takehito Koyasu (Dio's voice actor) and Sheedle by Shouichi Ikeda (Char Aznable's voice actor) which really increased my interest in the game too. The Switch & PC version is based on the japanese-only PSP release which includes a separate mode where you meet Zetta's cute daughter from the future (who is playable as a guest character in Disgaea 5 too).

I only bought Makai Kingdom off the japanese eshop, and yeah it's merely stretched to the system's resolution. They sadly didn't even bother to make at least the CG illustrations clean and sharp, so it's a bit disappointing on that regard. Still a good option for those who were looking for an english TL though.

The musical one is giving a lot of speculation as to which format and if they'll have it in game. The PlayStation 1 version had songs with vocals and what not. There was a DS port which cut a lot of songs presumably due to licensing issues.

It won't bother me if its instrumental tbh.

The other game im hearing was never released here but iirc there was a psp game (ps1 maybe?) that was similar....I think Jennifer Hale was the protagonist?

I think you're talking about La Pucelle: Tactics, a PS2 game where Jennifer Hale plays Priere who's the main character. I only know about this as Priere is a common reoccurring post game/dlc character in Disgaea. I've never played her actual game though, but it is almost as old as Disgaea 1. This game supposedly had an EN release, but like most NIS games (especially back then) it was probably a very low supply and no one knew about it. I saw Soul Nomad maybe twice in my whole life when I got it used the second time I saw it, and Unlosing Ranger was so niche and unknown that I vividly recall when I asked a person at Gamestop if they had the game they looked at me like I was an insane person.

Turns out when you ask "Hey do you have 'Unlosing Ranger Vs Darkdeath Evilman' in stock?" the person at the counter will think you're insane or pulling a prank.

I tried playing through, but lost interest (I think it was too slow). The Ragnarok remake adds a new scenario around demon Priere rather than have her be only a joke ending.

Yup La Pucelle Ragnarok is the updated version which will be packaged with Rhapsody in vol 3

Oh shit good point, I completely forgot about the ds port, I hope it isnt that version
Btw, you guys ever played the ds port of disgaea 1? It is kind of impresive imo, graphically it loos very similar to the console version, it runs like shit tho
But it has a lot of content

My first Disgaea game was Disgaea DS, it was fine and ran fine. The biggest thing is their is no voice acting in the cutscenes at all, so certain things lose a good amount of punch (Laharl in particular I think loses a good amount with no voice with how iconic his laugh is), but otherwise it is a fine port. I'm pretty sure no other port of Disgaea 1 works like the DS one.

I hope they keep the goofy vocal tracks, I remember X-Play making fun of those.

La Pucelle: Tactics is out of all their games the one I want to play the most, I bought it on PS2 not too long ago and it wasn't expensive, I don't know if that's because it got a decent print run or if it's just because it's so obscure.

In Japan it was actually published in 2002 before Disgaea, but was released in 2004 in the US, but not by Atlus but by some really, really obscure publisher (Mastiff I think?), I was really quite surprised I was able to get the copy I did for the price I did, but now I feel obligated to play that version since I already own it, but the Switch would be a good way to play it, we'll just have to see how this release turns out.

We finally have a release date for Labyrinth of Galleria. The previous game, Labyrinth of Refrain, was one of the best DRPGs I played (mostly for story, but the combat and exploration are good) and got brutally dark. Hopefully the new game will also be as brutal.

Has anyone played vol 3? How is it? I see mixed to positive reception so far.
