The American Civil War decided the question of whether states have a right to secede from the American Union. The answer was no. That has long been settled. Yet today, more than a century and a half afterward, another kind of secession is playing out across America: individuals are seceding one by one from the national enterprise.

Americans, to a surprising degree, are no longer proud of their country and do not trust their government, these misgiving being two crucial aspects of their disenchantment that portend troubling implications for America’s future.

Public-opinion polls suggest that Americans are far less patriotic than they were just a few decades ago. According to a recent Wall Street Journal poll, just 38 percent of Americans say that patriotism is important to them, compared to 70 percent who expressed patriotic feelings in a poll taken in 1998. The decline in patriotism is most pronounced among younger Americans: only 23 percent of respondents under age thirty said that patriotism is important to them. That is a troubling statistic because it suggests that the problem is growing worse over time and that the age group with the most negative outlook on America is poised to take over the leadership of the country.

In view of those figures, it is not surprising to learn that Americans place little trust in their government in Washington. Pollsters have been measuring this attitude since the 1950s by asking respondents if they trust the government to do the right thing “always or most of the time.” In the 1950s and early 1960s, roughly 75 percent of respondents expressed a general faith in the competence and integrity of government. That number began to decline through the 1960s and 1970s, largely in response to the war in Vietnam, the Watergate scandal, and the economic and social problems of that era. Trust in government rebounded through the 1980s and 1990s, reaching a peak of 55 percent in 2002, and has been in free fall ever since. In 2023, just 20 percent of respondents expressed a favorable view of the government.

Trust in government varies depending upon which party controls the presidency. During the Trump years, only 15 percent of Democrats expressed trust in the government; now, during the Biden presidency, only 10 percent of Republicans will do the same, while trust among Democrats has rebounded substantially. The numbers certainly reflect the growing hostility between members of the two parties: they appear to dislike one another more than they admire their country. Nevertheless, levels of trust in government today are still broadly low by historical standards.

These attitudes are mirrored in various ways in the day-to-day decisions made by American citizens:

1. The number of Americans leaving the country to live elsewhere has more than doubled over the past few decades, from four million in 1999 to nine million in 2023. Every four years many prominent Americans threaten to move if the candidate from the opposing party is elected to the presidency.

2. Millions of American families have abandoned the public schools in recent decades, owing to a perceived decline in standards or the politicization of the school curricula. The number of homeschooled students has quadrupled over the past two decades from one million in the year 2000 to nearly four million this year. The number of students enrolled in charter schools has more than doubled from 1.7 million in 2010 to 3.7 million in 2021, as more families seek alternatives to the traditional public schools. The public schools have long played an important role in promoting American citizenship by providing a common curriculum to students of all classes, races, and ethnic groups. That (sadly) is no longer the case.

3. Americans are abandoning the workforce in unprecedented numbers. The labor force participation rate in the United States has declined from 67.2 percent in the year 2000 to around 62 percent today, a decline of eight to nine million workers in a workforce of 165 million. How those absent workers are surviving without employment is anyone’s guess. But the disappearance of those jobs is taking a toll on economic growth and prosperity across the nation.

4. Gun ownership has surged over the past few years as an unprecedented 7.5 million Americans purchased guns for the first time between 2019 and 2021. Most gun owners cite self-protection as a main reason for their purchase, their concern inflamed by rising crime and parallel attacks on law enforcement.

5. The most alarming trend: Young Americans are no longer volunteering to serve in the military to the extent they did just a few years ago. The U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force recently announced that they will fail to meet their recruitment goals this year. The army, for example, had to cut its active-duty strength because it failed to meet its recruiting goals by 25 percent. The navy and air force are having similar difficulties. Military leaders point out that the number of young people who meet the military’s fitness standards is declining for several reasons, including drug use, mental-health issues, and lack of physical fitness. More importantly, fewer young people are interested in serving in the military: just 9 percent of Americans of service age (eighteen to thirty-nine) say they are interested in joining the military, compared to 23 percent a few years ago. Many who might have joined in the past point to concerns about “woke” policies in the military related to race, feminism, sexual identity, and other issues. Those Trump voters who just a few years ago sent their sons and daughters into the military are no longer doing so, probably due to these woke policies. The trend is likely to continue and perhaps accelerate, causing significant challenges for military leaders. Fortunately, the United States is unlikely to engage in a conventional war anytime soon. In such an event, the military might not have enough manpower to fight it—a large problem for a military superpower with global responsibilities.

These figures indicate a growing trend among Americans to “secede” from the national enterprise. Americans in large numbers do not trust their government and do not feel pride in their country. They are acting out these attitudes by renouncing their citizenship, withdrawing from the public schools, arming themselves because the authorities cannot or will not protect them, leaving the workforce, and disdaining military service. Can a nation prosper when its citizens no longer feel an attachment to the national enterprise? Can it even survive? These are important questions that are likely to be answered one way or another in the next decade or two.

Have you tried not being a Weimar Republic?

I used to be patriotic. I was a 20 year old boomer who yelled at people when they disrespected the flag or mistrusted the government.

That was before my president told me that I, and everyone who looks like me, am at fault for everything wrong with the world and it would be best if I just fucking died along with the rest of my cursed race.

>1
what happened last election again?
they didn't call it until the next day, which hasn't happened in how long or ever?
>2
it's almost like school doesn't teach anything anymore other than nonsense and sexual degeneracy
>3
who doesn't want to work for minimum wage as everything keeps getting more expensive?
>4
i thought all cops were bastards
>5
damn, i thought getting the president to check his watch at your funeral was the greatest accomplishment in life

it really is perplexing

Conspicuously absent from the paragraph on the military is the part where we lost our nation's longest war to 50 IQ cavemen, and in the most chaotic and humiliating way possible.

I dunno, I love what America is supposed to be, but fucking hate the people running it into the ground.

I'm not sure if this fits the definition of patriotism they're using or not.

Its simple really. If the government isn't going to do its job of protecting the borders, keeping the law functional, protecting the kids, ensuring there is a future for the people, then its up to the people to fill in the roles that the government refuses to do.

Because the government right now isn't too dissimilar to a group of bandits. Because if they were proper, they'd get these three mafia rules right. "Keep them scared" "Keep them happy" and "Keep them busy."

They utterly failed at the second one which endangers the first and last. Lots of men are dropping out of society because it doesn't make them happy. No wife, no future, no investment in keeping everything running because they lack the former two. And because they're unhappy, they don't care about being scared and the only thing that keeps them busy are distractions and that's it. Then there's the whole borders not being protected which leads to a whole shitton of crime and competition for jobs. Its important to remember that the drug cartels are running roughshod on California with their operations in human trafficking and illegal farms remain unchallenged. Then there's the whole movement to troon out kids. Nuff said.

In short, its their fault everything is playing out this way.

Funny enough I used to know someone at work who was a boomer who thought that America was a "Christian Nation" and that burning the flag should result in jail time, yet crowded about how "we have freedom."

To be honest I would be hard pressed to argue against what it's supposed to be or how the founders set things up. The definition of patriotism for these, let's be nice and just say secondary psychopaths, is never questioning the government no matter what, unless of course Orange Hitler is president.

The political class cares more about hunting down dissidents than it does about making sure Mexican drug cartels can't easily hop the border and flood the country with inexpensive hard drugs or whatever. Of course CNN aka the regime's mouthpiece likes to convince us that people are protesting against children looking for a better life, when in reality they're fleeing the same violent gangs that neither Mexico City nor Washington will lift a God damn finger to do something about. Then they shift the blame to Americans for arming said cartels when in reality Central America has had a multitude of civil wars and is a far better source for certain items.

And since we're on the subject of bandits, I will end this speech with a quote from St. Augustine.

"But what are states but large bandit bands, and bandit bands but small states?"

I'm in awe that this journalist somehow managed to write an article which both suggests it should be illegal/immoral to dislike the government while also decrying fascism.

What kind of fucking worms are living in these people's brains?

I wonder if it will ever dawn on them that endlessly shitting on the majority of the population that pays all the taxes is a losing strategy.

Imagine that, the generation that was told the US was a "great evil" and everything wrong with the world because it was majority white and had a common culture grew up to not be patriotic.

I'm shocked, shocked I say.

Neck yourself in minecraft, journoshit

We don't pay the taxes any more. Megacorporations do. They pay more every second than we do in a lifetime. Don't let the propaganda about "0% income tax" fool you - their value to the system is enormous. That's why the federal government gives them more privileges at our expense every year.

It's also why they're so insistent on replacing white people. Whites are used to a certain level of luxury. Most of us would be unhappy living in the pod. We also would be unhappy being paid 5 dollars a day working for Amazon. Third world peasants don't come with these hangups. Give them a concrete cell and a bottle of swill and they'll happily labor away for virtually nothing. All while their employer becomes ever richer, in turn making the government ever richer.

Proud to be an American, proud of our country. Always have been, always will be.

Having said that, have no faith or trust in government, law enforcement, the judiciary, or the mainstream media at any level. The utterly oppressive, fucked-up response to the Chinese Flu did it for me, as it did for many Americans. Believe that pushed many people over the edge into silent secession, doing their best to live without reference to "them".

Served a full career in the military, retired many years ago. When I retired saw the military wasn't what it used to be even five years prior, much less during the 80's. When you see the "leadership" of the US Army say with a straight face that "lactation support" was the Army's top priority, you can no longer take such "leadership" seriously. This week saw some 82nd Airborne Division "chorus" singing on some TV show. A quick look told me many of these "paratroopers" would be quite useless in battle, just like the overweight, cigarette-puffing female "paratrooper" I couldn't take seriously 25 years ago this summer. The warfighters have long gone, the top ranks, both enlisted and officer, full of politicians.

America is a great country because of our people and our Constitution. Our people are wising up to "their" bullshit. The Constitution still remains, somewhat defended by the SCOTUS.

"They" believe we have forgotten the oppressive measures taken during the Chinese Flu. No. The next time a national calamity hits, as it always does, "they" will be very unpleasantly surprised to see just how many Americans either don't listen to "their" bullshit, ignore what "they" say, and/or work around any oppressive measures. "They" got their temporary compliance at the cost of long-term noncompliance. The national level of anger is as high as I have ever seen it and still rising.

Don't have as many days in front of me as I do behind me. Should I pass away any time soon, will leave an America much worse off than when I showed up. Damned shame. As I look at my little granddaughter, just hope her parents can send her to a private school. She's smart and I don't want her going to a public school, which will do their best to make her stupid in the name of "equity", and do their best to teach her that wrong is right. Wrong is not right, never has been, never will be.

Lol, the union still trying to keep all the other states from separating by just applying a band-aid to it. Jornou-scum ain’t ready for the war to come.

While we're on the subject, guess what else the marxistsl govt wants to and will destroy next year.

Has America Surrendered to Marxism? Reconciliation Memorial Slated for Demolition After House Republicans Fail to Defend Civil War Monument in Arlington National Cemetery

By Shawn Bradley Witzemann Jul. 18, 2023 11:25 am

As the Marxist Democrat revolution pushes forward, House Republicans have once again failed to take legislative action, and the Reconciliation Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery is scheduled for demolition no later than January 1, 2024.
An amendment to the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act was recently presented by Representative Bob Good (R-VA).
Unfortunately for defenders of the Reconciliation Memorial, Rep. Good’s addition to the defense spending bill was rejected four days ago in a late-night vote that saw 41 Republicans break away after Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R – AL), who spoke in favor of the amendment.

Retired Lt. Col. Ed Kennedy was recently quoted in a press release from Defend Arlington — a coalition of American citizens who oppose the destruction of the Reconciliation Memorial.
“The extravagant spending on removing the Reconciliation Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery exemplifies the reckless nature of woke defense spending,” Kennedy stated, “While our junior personnel struggle to make ends meet, millions are being allocated to dismantle a memorial dedicated to veterans. I can hardly fathom that this is happening in America."

While historical monuments were systematically destroyed by the enraged mob, little to nothing was done in response. Those few vocal Americans who pushed back against the Marxist uprising were subjected to public ridicule. Any counterrevolutionary movements were effectively neutered as a result of the January 6th Reichstag Event.

And on January 1, 2021, the Marxist disdain for American history became Department of Defense policy through an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act.

Congress pushed to override President Trump’s veto and the “Naming Commission” was created — tasked with providing a list of offending Confederate monuments to the Pentagon in advance of their scheduled demolition.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin concurred with all Naming Commission recommendations in October 2021 and ordered their implementation as soon as possible.

As we inch ever closer to 2024, the Reconciliation Memorial and the history it represents now rests squarely in the crosshairs of a Marxist Revolution that currently dictates nearly every mechanism of the United States government.

Unfortunately for anyone who wants to preserve American history, many House Republicans are behaving more fecklessly than ever.

Reconciliation memorial
A somber message found at the base of the Reconciliation Memorial

>Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.
>No, not that kind of dissent!

>You must support the national enterprise! (Meaning the progressive project.) Join the Army! (But don't buy guns or try to keep your local community safe.) Send your kids to public school! (But don't speak up in school board meetings.)

I'd start being proud of America again real quick if things would get a little goofy and a bunch of leftists found a new calling in life as fertilizer
