She gets a lot of undeserved hatred for the notoriously misunderstood high-heels thing, but ironically Claire Dearing might arguably be the greatest female protagonist I've seen in a movie since Aliens, in my opinion. And that's not because I'm an obvious Jurassic Park sperg.

Claire Dearing is real
. That is to say, she behaves for the most part the way a real person might in the situations placed upon them. She has her strengths but most importantly she has her flaws. We as humans relate to and come to love characters with flaws because they remind us of ourselves, as flawed creatures. Often they are used as examples to show us that despite our shortcomings, we can be able to overcome our obstacles and do great things if we press ourselves to succeed.

My real point here is that flawed characters make good characters because they are relatable. And good characters prove relatable regardless of race or gender. This is non-negotiable fact, and it is important information for a writer to know if they are aiming to create compelling characters that their audience should care about.

Feminazis like those at TMS don't get this. They are too stupid to truly appreciate or understand the importance of believable character traits in storytelling and really are not qualified to make judgements on the matter. They think that any non-male character who is portrayed in a role (no matter how grand or minor) and makes a believable mistake consistent with reality must be bad or "sexist". Alternatively in their view a "good" female character can only be acceptable if she is completely in control of everything and never shows any true signs of weakness (and also talks down to/outsmarts/beats the shit out of a man who could clearly crush her in real life at least once at any point in the film), although sometimes even these rules don't apply if it is simply decided by the feminists in question that they don't. And because directors and writers listen to these idiots, whether out of fear, agreement, or just supposed popular demand, people get deprived of far too many potentially good stories and compelling characters because they are deemed "problematic" by a bunch of oversensitive cunts. Now we get shitty characters like Black Widow, Rey, and Alice Abernathy who border on arguably Mary-Sue levels of awfulness.

Claire is already a success when we first see her in Jurassic World. She has competently managed to oversee a multi-billion dollar theme park built around defying the laws of science itself for ten whole years, and once shit hits the fan and the island starts to delve into chaos, she proves herself invaluable in keeping everything from falling apart. But because she learns the valuable lesson that it's okay to compromise your persona as an emotionless business manager to save your fucking family from dying a violent death at the maw of a bloodthirsty genetic mutant, this movie is sexist, and you should not see it.

You can begin to understand why as a writer I have come to hate these people so much.

On a related note, I am choosing not to keep up with news about Jurassic World's sequel so that I might appreciate it more when it is actually released. However, based on what I have heard about it, in response to the unwarranted outrage over Claire in the most current installment, she is apparently going to "dominate" the sequel. This phrasing of her role genuinely concerns me as I would really prefer not to see another potentially great female character arc destroyed by deluded feminazis who think they aren't getting their way whenever they see a woman in a movie behaving like a real person. Especially when that character arc takes place within a franchise as important to me as this one.
I already rated this "Winner", but "Feels" came as a close second. I would say your analysis of Claire is spot on. It's my belief that she was the real protagonist of JW even if Grady got more attention in the merchandising.

As for female characters with flaws, I myself tend to see character flaws as an essential factor in raising the story's tension factor. A character with weaknesses simply faces more of a challenge than one who can breeze through any conflict you throw at them. An invincible character makes for a less compelling story, so a trend of invincible characters will ruin storytelling like you said. I understand the desire to represent "underdog" demographics fairly in fiction, but making them flaweless or invincible does this cause more harm than good.

But then, the magazine does call itself The Mary Sue...

Yeah, the Mary Sue wouldn't want a human character with flaws. Any flaws put on a character, they will just complain about it as others have said. For all Claire has going for her as a protagonist, they still tack on some complaint in how she is "inaccurate" and "offensive" as a female character. With all the complaints and the "representation" bandwagon they stand on, it wouldn't be surprising they do these things only for clicks and hearing their own whiny voice in text format.

Wolverine is masculine and that's terrible.

Pfft Wolverine is one of the best around and he also has a sensitive side that the author so gracefully avoids talking about. Fuck if he's that tired of manly superheroes he can always go to Thor who doesn't to know how to do anything besides throwing cups to the floor. True masculine ideals, there.

That was written by a guy as well. Once again, the comments provide some sanity.

The author legit thinks harassment and misogyny is caused by characters like him too.

Women who dare have opinions about, well, anything are getting harassed, and going to cons can mean running a gauntlet of unwanted comments and harassment. Too often, I see guys like me spouting of the worst MRA and PUA clichés. Heck, those ideas shouldn’t even be getting any traction with anyone who has any idea what exclusion is like, but they do, and I think I know part of the reason why.I blame Wolverine. If you want to see some of the worst traits of toxic masculinity expressed in a comic book character, you don’t need to look a lot further than the short, adamantium-boned, dangerous Canadian.

In a way these people are no different from the conservative parents in the 90s who bawled about video games being too violent and satanic and forcing people to ban these things. Only at least you could understand and comprehend they were just acting as (albeit stupid and misguided) over-protective parents wanting the "best" for their kids. These loser 20 something college grad virgins have nobody like that to "protect", thus have little to no sympathy.

They'll claim to be protecting women, POC and LGBT people but most of them are grown and don't need some (usually) white SJ moral guardian to stop "problematic elements in media".

So they think these people are like children.

Glad to know they think so highly of the people who they claim are in their best interest.

As a Wolverine sperg, I'm triggered. They conveniently only scratch the surface of his character in order to propagate their agenda.

Yes, he's a really rough customer, but he's also shown himself to be a gentle, caring person to his friends, demonstrated by him taking characters like Shadowcat and Jubilee under his wing and acting as a father figure for him.

Hell the entire crux of his character is his struggle to be a good person and do the right thing despite him being trained as a living weapon and burdened with an animalistic nature.

I became such a big fan of the character because as a teenager, I had serious anger issues and lashed out at those around me frequently, and seeing that someone like Wolverine could overcome his struggles and inspire others to do good themselves was very inspiring for me myself.

So yeah, fuck these assholes who use these characters I love to push their agenda.

My friend shared a pic on Facebook comparing Black Widow with Miss Piggy and how the former is despised by feminists and the latter won a feminist award, despite BW being much more competent and accomplished. I feel the same about Claire and let's say, Harley Quinn. One is an accomplished businesswoman who runs the most popular park in the world, sticks to the path that she's chosen despite pressure from her family, and saves her nephews and fellow park employee from a giant killer dinosaur by unleashing a friggin' T-Rex on it. And the latter is a ditzy, psychopath skank who screwed her way to a PhD and then threw it away to run off with a psychotic clown. But guess which one the feminsts despise and the one that they love?

It's hilarious tumblr sees Harley as a feminist icon bc then they always make the same dumb "IT'S DR. HARLEEN QUINZEL SHE EARNED HER DEGREE DON'T UNDERESTIMATE WOMAN'S INTELLIGENCE"

Yeah, she earned her degree...by slutting herself around the campus. What's so feministic about that? Then again, since tumblrinas have terrible grades...

Lol, feminist mass murderer in an abusive relationship.

Miss Piggy is an arrogant, materialistic, entitled sham prone to violence against males. She is also fat.
What's a feminist not to like?

I wouldn't be surprised if a number of them grew-up on the 90's animated series and that's why they give Harley a pass.

Well, Miss Piggy makes children happy, and has great fashion sense, so she's head-and-shoulders above your SJW de jour.

Didn't Harley originate from the 90s cartoon?

Didn't Harley originate from the 90s cartoon?

Yup. And in her defense there, she was a lot more capable than one might give her credit for. Sure she was still a ditzy blonde who slept her way to the top but in one instance came a lot closer to killing Batman than the Joker ever did. Her portrayals since then tend to be not so kind to her.

Harley tends to jump between sympathetic tragic abuse victim/quirky comedic relief character and anti-hero/anti-villain. She actually pretty hard to write for and anybody who actually pays attention would know that you're talking about someone who has engaged in unforgivable crimes such as the abduction and torture of a child and mass murder.
Of coarse Mary Sue is most likely giving her a free pass because Girl nerds love her and know which way their bread is buttered.

The thing with Harley is that she is a complicated character, pitiable but also competent in some regards and very charismatic most of the times, but people cannot simply erase her flaws and treat her as some idealistic flawless Mary Sue role model like they do with Black Widow or Rey from Star Wars, that's not Harley then. Most of her actions should not be seen as admirable, tbh.
