He was completely unnecessary to the plot and was added just as a marketing gimmick.
That was my main complaint.

I know somebody - a real moron - who acknowledged that it was unlikely to happen in the near future, but thought it would be a great thing to have a same sex couple in a Disney film; someone could see this Disney film with a same-sex couple and change their mind about gay marriage... (No, I'm not joking.)

(And why should there be a same-sex couple in a movie set in, like, pre-20th-century Scandinavia? Homosexuality was illegal back then.)
