I'm not sure what Wizards is planning to do with this sales restructuring. I know it's been years since bought seal product from Walmart and no way in Hell I will now. Though I must say I will be going to drafts and prelease at my LGS, the new set is actually really good.

Just some updates on what's making the MTG Youtube community sperg.

- WOTC decided to stop their direct to retailer distribution model. This means that all local retailers need to go through distributors.

- WOTC raised the price to distributors but kept the MSRP the same. Now the average retailer is paying around $82 a booster box and sells them for $95-$110 per box.

- WOTC announced a partnership with amazon where amazon fulfills WOTC sales direct to the consumer for $89.99 a booster box.

All this happened over the course of 3 months, so it's obvious this was planned. I've never seen a company more intent on shutting down their retailers. It's really obvious they either want to cut out the middle man or move to digital. MTG Arena, Magic's digital game is going open beta next week and there's a huge marketing push right now to get people to use Arena.

If they are aiming for arena to take over they better speed up because it's been very slow in adding features.

LOL. Didn't they try this shit before? They launched a MTG game for consoles in the summer of 2015, promising it for the XBO and PS4. It did get released for the former (it was a buggy mess) and never came out for the latter. Considering how WotC never learns from its mistakes, i'm sure this Arena thing is going to be a pile of fail.

Wizards try to play catch up on an already oversaturated market makes me laugh, leaders innovate while the sheep follow. Blizzard hit it out of the park and even Konami is doing well with duel links. They may as well do a PUBG or fortnite clone while they’re at it for all the good it’ll do them.

I was very interested in Arena. Until I found out WOTC isn't support Mac with it. They are going to loose alot of sales because of it, IMO.
Mac desktops are like 10% of the PC desktop gaming market, they're historically & currently not worth pandering to for most companies. If we're talking iOS and mobile devices(re: being competition for Hearthstone) that's another story.

It's really mindblowing how bad WOTC has been with attempting & botching every attempt at Magic for 20+ years. Blizzard beat them to the mobile market with a first-try at CCGs and really bloodied their noses on that one. Blizzard! They do nothing quickly, shame on WOTC.

Strange week for Magic,

This article was put out by a tournament organizer who would hold WPN events (WPN basically means it's Wizards of the Coast sponsored, and having a WPN store gets you more products, better pricing, prize support, etc.) in a local library.

WOTC dropped the hammer on them and have removed their WPN status because a local library does not count as a "dedicated play space." Unsleeved Media, DesolatorMagic and a few others have done videos on this and while WOTC refused to give them back their WPN status, they decided to ship them some products so they can have an unsanctioned event.

So why is this hilarious? Two reasons.

1. These tournaments in the library heavily targeted children. The library is allegedly in a bad neighborhood and the only other Game Shops in the area were filled with college aged and adults and parents of preteens did not want to drop their kids off in that environment, but they would gladly drop the kids off at the library. Further, the prereleases would average abut 30 kids per event and WOTC is always going off about how children are the future and how they're adjusting the art and tone policing to make the game more friendly to children, so shutting down a tournament that was specifically for children is completely counter intuitive.

2. My favorite, 5 years ago WOTC had this article on their main website PRAISING THE TOURNAMENT ORGANIZER for holding these events for these children and holding the organizer as a shining example of the community.

Only this company, I swear.

There's also a rumor that Magic Arena, the new Hearthstone competitor, has a system that rigs your opening hand and card draws, thereby preventing good players from winning too much and going infinite, being able to play for free. I haven't seen anything about this from WOTC themselves but apparently they admitted it.

Magic: The Gathering's Guilds of Ravnica Pre-release events happened last weekend but the 30+ kids that usually play at pre-releases that tournament organizer Bruce Richard regularly held at a local community library weren't able to play because the Wizards Play Network (WPN) shut it down.

Edit: Beaten, sorta? Shakes fist @Liquid Cool
As Richard told in an article published on CoolStuffInc, the tiny store that he works for had their WPN status revoked. Since the store's space was too small to run tournaments for the kids, Richard had been running tournaments at the local library for the kids, and he was able to host pre-release events there and some small Magic: The Gathering events. However, a couple of months ago, the store received an email from WPN requesting a re-verification. They asked for a video walkthrough of the store so they could update their records. Since their store was too tiny and didn't have a public bathroom and play area, they received the following email:

… [your store’s] WPN account is deactivated due to not having a dedicated play space available for 12 players, and not having the space to create one. WPN standards require a dedicated play space for 12 players.

Kind Regards,

Richard replied with a lengthy email to appeal WPN's decision:

I’m Bruce Richard, the TO for [our store]. I am writing to appeal the deactivation of [our store]’s WPN account. The reason the store doesn’t have a dedicated play space is not for lack of effort, but simply due to the size restrictions of the store itself. The space [between] the glass display cases is barely six feet. Even removing all the glass cases on one side of the store would not create a space big enough for 12 players to play Magic.

In fact, it was for this reason I initially approached [the owner] and asked him to sponsor our Magic group at the Library. At that time, we were told we could no longer run prereleases without a store to sponsor us. [The owner] owned the closest store, the only store in Newton that sells Magic cards, but the store isn't big enough for tournaments. [The owner] sponsored our tournaments and in return became eligible for all the products only WPN stores can get. While the situation is different from many other locations, it has worked out wonderfully here.

The Magic group at the Library is different in that it is made up completely of school age children. Our Prereleases have had players as young as 7 years old and as old as 18 (excluding myself once)! I wrote about our prereleases for Trick and Blake on the Mothership! Check out the links below to see some of the articles that went up on Wizards' own site:

The reason it is so important to [the owner] and I that we keep WPN status is for these prereleases. Most of the children who attend would not be permitted to attend prereleases otherwise. Their parents are hesitant to allow children so young to be dropped off at the closest game stores. Those stores tend to be in more questionable neighborhoods. The children will be left to play against opponents who are college age or older. The parents would have to stay at the store the entire time and that simply won't happen. The stores don't offer the flat prize structure and door prizes that we offer, as they are catering to older teens and college age players, while we are trying to create a fun experience for even the youngest player who is 0-3 but still excited to win a pack in the final round of the prerelease. Without our prerelease, over half of the players who attend our events simply will not be attending any prerelease.

The all-volunteer staff at the Library (it is a community supported library) love the tournaments as it is one of the only ways they are able to get young boys into the library and around books…

I understand [the store] doesn't meet the new standards for the WPN, but I'm confident the intent of the standards isn't to shut down a thriving Magic community of young players. I have almost 200 email addresses in my mailing list that I send out before each prerelease. The children enjoy the weekly events, but the prereleases are the special events that the children are so excited about. Please reactivate our WPN account so we can bring the Guilds of Ravnica prerelease and future prereleases to these young players!

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me…

Best Wishes,

Bruce Richard

Sadly, WPN wrote back, explaining why they won't reactivate the store's WPN status.

To be up front, we will not be re-activating [your store]’s WPN account. If the store were able to have a dedicated play space that is suitable for at least 12 players, we would reconsider. WPN guidelines are aimed at enforcing standards that ensure consistency among other qualities that we feel are important to the player experience. We cannot grant an exception, given that the WPN membership rests with the business, and not with your separate play location.

With there being a number of stores in the area outside of [your store], we suggest reaching out to others to consider sponsoring your Magic group. That way, you have a chance at providing your players with the same experience.

That's pretty unfair for the kids who don't have anywhere else to go for Magic Pre-release events. Richard shared a photo of the empty library seats where the kids usually play on his Twitter account:

Thankfully, according to Richard, Wizards of the Coast responded and said that they will make sure that the kids who missed the Guilds of Ravnica Pre-release will get something special:

So they kinda made good but at the same time it seems a bit off. It's so odd that WotC doesn't seem to have any feet on the ground really to understand how it is in the stores.

Edit: Beaten by minutes, sorta. Shakes fist @Liquid Cool

I saw it on twitter and Desolator Magic mentioned it in a video (I forgot which one) but Desolator said that Wizards stated it but I can't find any statement on it and I don't remember where I heard it first so it could have just been some twitter accounts repeating what they heard from Desolator.

I think it was near the end of this video.

Latest I heard was that opening hands are rigged, not for player strength, but for lands.

I know we throw the term around a lot, but how fucking autistic do you have to be to shut down those library events. I get it, you don’t want local stores anymore, you can knock out the supply chain and just ship to amazon. But fucking seriously, you’re a company that made its millions on Minotaurs and dragons, going ham on the letter of the law is a strange choice.

>Wants to be taken seriously as an online CCG
> Admits to rigging opening hands in the beta.

Promising rigged opening hands so you never get blasted for lands seems really exploitable for weenie decks.

It’s specifically for one game matches and only “semi” exploitable.

  • The system draws an opening hand from each of two separately randomized copies of the decks, and leans towards giving the player the hand with the mix of spells and lands (without regard for color) closest to average for that deck.
The reasoning is to get closer to best of three in terms of mana variance.

Fuck it, doesn’t even move the needle for WotC’s Recent fuckups.

I got a Guilds prerelease pack. I don't see any color inconsistancies but the stock still feels kinda cheapy. Also did they change the foiling process again? These foils seem overdone, def not Tez the Schemer Foil-tier stuff. I'll go to a draft and see how this set plays but my innitial impressions are shaky.

Edit: On second look the foiling on the regular pulls looks damn fine, it's just my promo that has too much going on. Still, I'm not sure about this stock yet.

I think they run there promos on a separate line from normal pack foils, similar to the Spell Book/From the Vault foils. Hopefully these new foils won't curl the same way those did.
