I get that people are lazy and just want to get their article out, but the dichotomy the author lays out is really disingenuous.
I think WotC providing a more diverse fantasy cast is absolutely fantastic, if clumsily handled. At the same time, I’ve disengaged with Magic due to my concern over how they’ve responded to criticism, and their selective rules enforcement.

Unrelated: I hope nexus of fate spikes to $200 and the milk flows.

I suppose given the shitstorm that was GamerGate, none of this should be that surprising. And yet I'm still blown away that all this shit is coming out of a fucking card game.
You'd be surprised considering WOTC seems to be limping along solely because of its size at this point. I'm still surprised people give a shit about wizards putting women and trans people into their cards. Canonically speaking, doesn't Innistrad randomly have an Asian bloke for no apparent reason (other than they he won the pro tour)?

Yep, Snapcaster Mage one of the most used cards in Modern and Legacy.

So let's move (slightly) away from Hamblyburger Helper a second and onto his attacker a moment. There's recent evidence that Quinnepac University has terminated their relationship with the guy, and it was intoned by Matt in an old interview of his that he attacked someone else at another con event back in 2004.

I don't know much about Matt Loter; just the persona he put forward and the actions we know him to have taken thus far. I doubt Jeremy's lolsuit really goes anywhere, but the aftershocks of what Loter did are going to carry forward for some time: He's going to be forevermore remembered as "that dude that attacked that bearded Autistic faggot" and is going to have that hanging over him from here on out.

I keep coming to the same question - and while I suppose it's simply a natural evolution of a question I wish to fuck I could ask Eric Clanton, I may as well pitch it to you, Kiwis, to theorycraft with: Why the fuck did he think this was a good idea? Did he think there'd be no consequences? Did he think that Jeremy would just let the whole thing pass if he got his ass kicked hard enough? Did he think that he'd get protection from the powers that be? Did he think anything at all?

While I gave you a short answer on this one earlier, you deserve a better one, so here goes:

The very same people responsible for MagicGate even happening are the same clowns responsible for pushing this ideology in damn near every hobby these days. Whether it's comics, movies, video games, tabletop gaming, it doesn't matter, regressive leftists are coming for it. They don't want full control of it - not really. Their goal is, as it was in comics and vidya, to gatekeep and propagandize. They want the right to decide what can and can't be said and what is and is not canon solely according to their own Autistic ideological whims, consequences be damned - and in their world-view, letting the actual consumers have a say in their own entertainment is not allowed.

If you look at the people shrieking about how the problems with magic these days are its customerbase, you'll notice more than a little overlap with the usual suspects. This is not coincidence. This shit will keep happening, over and over again, until the entire thing runs its course, and each individual fanbase rejects or succumbs to the infection.

I think part of the answer is that Matt is almost as big an autist as Jeremy. The other part is that a lot of SJWs are drinking the "Punch A Nazi!" Kool-Aid, emboldened by the recent Antifa gangbangs. Matt honestly thought that he'd punch Jeremy, and that everyone outside his SocJus clique were going to see that Hambly is the next Hitler (hint: he's not a saint, but he's not the demon they paint him to be). Then he'd get showered with accolades and have parades held in his honor.

Truth be told, minor assault goes unpunished a lot more than you'd think. Legally, anyway. As far as just the attention of too many spergs drawing attention to him, he might have wagered it wouldn't have amounted to anything if he thought he could dismiss it all as "Gamergaters" and related rabble. Like even with the attention it is getting, it's (mostly) from Conservative outlets that are already heavily focused on Lib overreactions. Like the link I posted has it's own "Feminism" tab, while it's gotten some attention it's not like this is blowing up the mainstream.

I brought this up before but the difference between comics and magic is that the narrative for mtg has no bearing on the actual gameplay. This isn't like comics where they make Mary sues or stupid ass plot lines to push an agenda, these are cards with abilities that won't be pass committee if it's too broken because it needs to fit into the game.

Case in point. Aisha who smiles at death is apparently the first trans character in mtg, and while some trans people may play her in commander, the average player judges her for the text in the card. All the shit Jeremy puts out about stuff like making teferi more woke is neat but most players don't know who teferi is and don't care to know either. It takes a special autism on both ends to truly care about what's being put in the art of a playing card.

You're absolutely right, insofar as few people actually give a shit about the cards themselves beyond the usual nonsense starting to creep in from the borders, so long as the crunch is all right.

Unfortunately that shit isn't what's driving people away from the hobby - it's a symptom and not the disease.

Magic has a host of fucking problems right now - actual ones - that WOTC has systemically failed to address. Horrifically bad cardstock (that is fucking destroying the value of what this hobby is based on), numerous misprints in set launches this year, and a number of fucking boxes that were launched with zero randomization, are just three big ones from the last year alone. Many of these problems are things that have been bitched about for months, if not the start of this thread, and yet little - if anything - has been done about these.

What WOTC has done, and what's pissing everyone off, is virtue signaling. Lots and fucking lots of virtue signaling.

And it's the same shit it always is: Staff members and community managers who shamelessly flash their bonafides, push the same politics, and blame the customerbase for an insular nerd hobby being insular and filled with nerds, then declaring that those nerds, who are the game's fucking customers, need to change (or get the fuck out if they won't/can't). They push the same gender communism horse shit where if a hobby or work isn't X percentage women and Y percentage POC it's not doing it right, and again, blames the fucking customers for this. One of the Head Judges from Wizards' Judge Program, last year, literally said if you're a white male, they don't want you in the judge system and that you shouldn't apply. It's the same fucking diversity-uber-alles bullshit we fucking always see from these ideologues, because these faggots think everything has to be political, at all times.

Putting it simply: The hobby has real problems that aren't being addressed, and WOTC seemingly doesn't give a damn about addressing them, but somehow always finds the time to fucking virtue signal and have its staff grandstand about how cool and progressive they are.

Fans: The card stock is shit!

WOTC: Ok, but what about this character? SHE'S TRANS!

Fans: Who cares? Look at the errors on the cards in this expansion!

WOTC: Never mind that - here's flavor text revealing that these two guys were a couple!

Fans: What are you doing about all the judges who have convictions for sex crimes?

WOTC: Clearly you all are Nazi bigots and we don't want the thousands of dollars you give us yearly anymore

WOTC (to rainbow haired whales and soyboys): So I defended the honor of a cosplay thot and made every character a disabled trans Muslim enby lesbian woman. You guys interested in our product?

Whales and soyboys: Eh. We don't spend money on stuff, silly boys! ....Oh, and if you change any of those characters back, we're going to screech all over Twitter and ResetEra! Buh-bye!

Wizards isn't limited to just making mistakes with lore and favor. The fact that a Standard Core set had better reprints than Master 25 should show another glaring weakness.

Though I will give Wizards credit for making several interesting new cards and reprinting Scapeshift and Crucible of Worlds. The actually made a few decks, Bridgevine and Blue/White Sprits, in modern possible with the new cards which are actually really cool in my opinion. Even the banning of Probe and Deathrite made Legacy more diverse, though that format still has the reserve list problem.

I still hold out hope for the game, even though Wizards seems intent on fucking it up.

Bro, don't forget a DRAFT SET had better reprints. Battlebond had some good shit, and I'm still glad Doubling Season got a reprint.

I'd forgotten how good that set was. Which is sad that a Summer gimmick set had better reprints that a Master set. Especially since the Masters set is $7 more a pack.

If only there were consequences for Clanton. One misdemeanor and a little probation? Unless he squealed and gave up a lot of useful information that was a joke in terms of justice.

Loter isn't going to get much in the way of consequences, either, just a bunch of sped cred.

Dunno man. The amount of cringe Jeremy shat out when he was trying to get a WOTC boycott going is a little sad. That and he's a married man who still has cover magic for the views.

Friend are you implying "You guys, this company totally knows me and has it out for me...

... no wait I mean I'm pretty sure I have the grounds to sue them! This could be huge news guys, who will join me -... no?

... uh... uh... t-they fuck kids?"

didn't come across as the confident and steadfast truths of a man who had the full conviction of his message, and did in fact strike you as the desperate ravings of a man trying to artificially concoct his own personal """consumer revolt""" in order to hotshot his way into the anti-SJW stratosphere with his favorite YouTubers?

We don't talk that way about our boy Jeremy here, fella. I believe this is yours!
