In recent months, the controversies surrounding the comic book community seems to have peaked in a severe uptick of blunt harassment and blatant violence. With an episode of doxxing that was intricately linked to the #ComicsGate movement, shop owners found themselves exposed and threatened in very real ways, ways that escalated to physical vandalism, cyber sabotage and tangible threats that have had an impact on people’s lives.*
Recently, at [edit: during. Attack occured at an off-site location] Gen Con, a man named Jeremy Hambly was allegedly assaulted. I say allegedly because charges have not been filed against anyone to my knowledge, and the IndyStar has stated the IMPD claims to have had no report filed by Hambly. --Tangible proof was provided by a Twitter user than a police report was filed with IMPD on August, 2, 2018 regarding the assault on behalf of Hambly-- Jeremy Hambly is known on social media as The Quartering, a right-leaning Youtuber who aligns himself with the very outskirts of the accepted comics community. I do not condone violence in most situations, I feel as though our words should be powerful enough to convey our messages and invoke change, but sometimes this is not the case. Sometimes our words, voting with our wallets and refusal to entertain the rhetoric we disagree with falls upon deaf ears. And if that rhetoric is dangerous to others?**
Well, I won’t be losing any sleep over the fact that a fist made the point a bit more clear. And there’s a very simple reason for this:
Jeremy Hambly is the one who dogwhistled the reactive portion of the community and attempted to destroy careers, sabotaged the safety and peace of mind of a very good friend of mine, and started a smear campaign against a group of shop owners who exercised their right to speak to a publisher about a future book that isn’t even available to pre-order to the direct market yet. These are not chains. These are individual businesses and they have the right to refuse service to anyone they please or question the services they provide. They have the right to publicly denounce the creator. Let it be noted that several shop owners even agreed to allow customers to order the books and have them shipped to their respective LCS. They simply wouldn’t carry them in stock for those who walk in off the street. That’s Freedom of Speech, right?***
Isn’t that why everyone is saying this gem of a man, who was banned from Magic the Gathering events for life because his videos caused so much harassment to a female cosplayer that she quit the scene, shouldn’t have been sucker punched?****
Your freedom of speech does not free you from the consequences of that speech, and sometimes that means unpleasant things happen. No one was killed, seriously injured and no places of businesses were specifically targeted. A few knuckles vs repeated acts of terrorism seems like a mild trade-off for the type of fanatical internet cult these fans have created.
The general retort among this circle of fans is that they simply want politics to be removed from their beloved stories because the call for social justice and equity is ruining their fun! In 1941, Captain America is literally depicted punching Hitler in the face. Superman is a metaphor for immigration, adaptation to foreign land and the American Dream. Batman tackles mental health issues, disabilities, the poor and disenfranchised. But, yeah, okay. I can see where the new female Thor probably crossed too far into politics for your liking.*****
These same folks, the ones who have caused so much harm to others, have called themselves inclusive. They say they aren’t against diversity, they support women and they aren’t homophobic. But all of the evidence points to the contrary, and it isn’t even their fault all of the time. Because as a society we have so deeply embedded the white hetero superiority in our arts that even tokenism diversity is heralded as progression. We’ve taught them that you can separate the art from the artist, the politics from the story, and that nothing will happen.
But that’s how Diversity and Comics happens. That’s how #ComicsGate, #MovetheNeedle, #GamersGate and #MagicGate happens. That’s how windows are smashed over the refusal to entertain their rhetoric happens and that’s how personal attacks on bystanders on social media happens.******
You cannot, and should not, separate who these people are from their work or their words or their accountability because who they are is intertwined in that. Supporting them financially gives them credibility and validation, and lends credence to their platform that dogwhistles and shines a Bat-Signal on all of those who may disagree with them.*******
And the people who claim to be the allies of POC, women, the LGBTQ+ community? They allow it. They ignore it because it doesn’t endanger THEM and it doesn’t disrespect THEM. But if you can talk respectfully to someone who has labeled me a fat, stupid, slutty cunt because I don’t like something they enjoy?
We aren’t fucking friends. We aren’t allies. We never were.********
And speaking for women, specifically, you want to scream you’re on our side but you do it so loudly you aren’t hearing US and isn’t that more important? You don’t get to decide how to represent women if you aren’t one. But it takes a man stepping in, and preferably one we aren’t in a relationship with because otherwise he’s doing it for the sex, and repeating verbatim what we’ve been screaming in the background to make most of y’all even stop to listen.*********
Back to my friend. She’s in the industry. She works in it. She runs shops and sites and deals with creators and fans alike. She knows, very well, how the sales of books look and the base the stores she’s affiliated with have. She’s knowledgeable as a fan. She writes and is involved with podcasts.
And she’s been so harassed that I cannot even name her because y’all want to subject her to that under the guise of free speech.
“I’d give Hitler a good review if the book was good!” That’s not a verbatim quote and I’m not dogwhistling, so no names. But my friend, a Jewish female, saw that. The Holocaust isn’t the distant memory of a wound that’s scarred and remains as a reminder. It’s gaping, it’s festering and it happened yesterday. She has family members who are alive who lived through the horrors of Hitler’s reign.**********
But… if he’s a good creator we could ignore the genocide? Because fucking politics?
Separation of politics and creation leaves too much room for complicity. It is not disrespectful to demand someone be aware and sensitive to those he shares the space around him with. And if it were, do it anyways. No one should live in fear because some nimrod is sad about a change in character aesthetic.***********
Comics are about inclusivity. They teach us the lessons in life we need to survive, they take us on journeys and provide an escape. But that escape doesn’t mean ignoring reality, because our stories and our arts have always been grounded in permanency. We write books and songs and paint pictures to immortalize our history. And history is political and sociological and painful. It isn’t mean to be comfortable. The humanities are meant to help us learn and grow, and you cannot do that by ignoring the foundations they’re built upon. And comics shouldn’t be used as a shield, they should be used as a glue.
To bring us together. To overcome the divide. To allow us to relate and to learn and to empathize.
But instead they’re being used to promote agendas that are built upon hate and violence and intolerance, and you cannot, must not, tolerate intolerance.
And if that means someone gets punched in the face? Then so be it.
Because I’m tired of not belonging in the community I love. And I shouldn’t have to feel like that because you want to protect the freedom of speech, but not advocate for consequences, of those who would insult, berate and harm me if given the chance.
Slut shaming is not okay. Hypersexualization is not okay. Lack of inclusion is not okay. Ignoring the plight of others who are actually being oppressed is not okay. Transphobia is not okay. Racism is not okay. Anything ending with -ism or -phobia is 99% likely to not be okay.
And it’s not okay you are demanding I look the other way while people abuse their rights in order to continue to oppress and harm other human beings.
So punch a fucking Nazi. Cap did it!
*: So this idiot happens to be referring to an as-of-so-far unproven break-in on a comic book store owned by an SJW comic pro who, surely by coincidence, has provided no evidence whatsoever that this break-in ever occurred. This is somehow Comics fans/Jeremy's/Gamergate's/etc fault, for reasons she will fail to bring up in the following paragraphs. Don't worry, though, gentle reader, I will mock it all the same.
**: All right, so we have a few facts here that are kind of interesting. First, she doubts Jeremy's assault happened, until she got actual blastback from commentators on the website that pointed out she was a moron and then hastily edited it while trying to downplay it. She then tries to connect Jeremy to Comicsgate - something he has, at best, been tangentially connected to - and use that to declare he deserved to be physically assaulted.
***: And in this one, she tries to argue that Mark Waid didn't
break the fucking law trying to strong-arm publishers into not putting out Jawbreakers, and, in turn, that Antarctic Press totally was doing the right thing when they cucked out of a fucking previously established deal. She argues that this is somehow
Jeremy's fault, and not say, the fucking comics fans that decided to retaliate by boycotting Antarctic en masse. The fuck. She then argues that this justifies her hatred.
****: Point of fact, Jeremy disparaging Sprangle wasn't the reason he was permabanned. Anyone who followed Jeremy's Autistic shitstorm knows that, too - WOTC couldn't find anything sufficiently damaging to ban him for in that regard. If they did, they
would have. He instead quite literally got banned for making Pepe memes and shitty edgelord jokes. I know that this woman's about as likely to recognize this as she is to die of causes that aren't related to unstable hypertension, but I figure someone should note it.
*****: People didn't hate female Thor because she was a woman. They hated her because she was written like shit and the comic she was in was pandering garbage that didn't know how to have good action or storytelling, written by a Social Justice Warrior who proudly wore a ASK ME ABOUT MY FEMINIST AGENDA shirt and enjoyed making existing fans miserable by butt-fucking existing characterization and lore. They retaliated by not buying the fucking book, surely a fucking unheard-of concept. The entire fucking "unsolicited opinions on Israel" meme started from that shit. But hey,
at least she wasn't an anti-semite who advocated murdering Jews and Christians, like a certain other Marvel staffer.
******: GamersGate is a
fucking European video gaming sale site, and this woman is an Autistic shitheel. I swear to Christ,
these assholes have been making this mistake since 2014 and directing shitloads of hatred and fucking death threats towards some asshole in the EU that has no fucking idea what they're talking about. Even if the site was somehow fucking involved with GG, that does not, in any way, justify the battery of threats, abuse, and harassment these cock-hydrants have ladled out while claiming to be victims.
*******: "Everything is now political and if you support anyone I disagree with, you are
literally Hitler."
Do you guys see why Comicsgate happened with retarded fucksticks like this asshole gatekeeping over the medium yet?
********: ....I'm under the assumption that this woman has no friends. Merely victims and temporary allies of convenience.
*********: No one listens to these people because they're shrill obtuse asshats who feel they're entitled to everyone's time and nobody's feedback. They believe simultaneously that everyone should do exactly what they say, but that they should be beholden to no one. The only rule the internet as a whole has ever held sacrosanct is this:
Prepare to get your shit punched in if you think you are above criticism.
Bonus Round: No one listens to their henpecked male feminist friends either.
Because we know it's not about inclusion, it's about gatekeeping with these assholes.
**********:
"My friend has recieved mean tweets and that's worse than Jews were subjected to during the holocaust."
All right, I'm done.
This is the one that fucking broke me. The fact that this woman can unironically declare that Comics nerds taking issue with the way assholes like her are running the issue
is equal to killing Jews is officially as far as I'm willing to go down this rabbit hole of idiocy. All I know is I now have a splitting headache and can now smell burned toast without bread being physically present.
