When I did a couple programming courses, the only "Windows is required" software I needed was a MIPS emulator for the assembly course. Which actually was available Linux native from my distro's repo, so I arguably had an easier time setting it up than the rest of the class. It was only "Windows is required" because the installer contained in the ZIP with the exercises was an .exe, and I'm sure wine or Proton could have handled that, it wasn't a complicated piece of software. The rest was just "your favourite editor and GCC" or "An IDE for x language" in reality, even if the instructions usually were for how to do things on Windows (which seemed needlessly complicated). Two of my instructors got really frustrated with me because I was probably one of the more Linux skilled users in the class, but I used KDE skinned to look like MacOS rather than their favourite tiling WM.
