Let me just bust out my ancient x86 hardware to run something that has no software for it.

I believe both run NetBSD pkgsrc - depending on your needs for a homelab I suppose it could work. Shit, there’s people here running Linux Libre distros as a daily driver.

I decided to go for the path of least resistance. I run Mint on my laptop. I don't have time to rebuild Chromium from scratch over two weeks. It could be fun, sure, but I literally don't have the time.

Last I looked at OpenIndiana it was very picky about hardware. Worse than 8/x86.

I'm going to go to a new college for an IT degree and I just got the specs in;
MINIMUM REQUIRED:RECOMMENDED:
PROCESSOR:AMD Ryzen 5 7th gen,
Intel i5 Processor 12th gen,
Apple M2*
AMD Ryzen 7 7th gen,
Intel i7 Processor 12th gen,
Apple M3*
OPERATING SYSTEM:Windows 11 /
MacOS 15* /
Linux variant* (They didn't even bother to choose a distro)
(Same as minimum)

*PLEASE NOTE:
If you run MacOS or Linux, you are required to either run a virtual machine or dualboot. This is because of proprietary Windows software use. This is treated as prerequisite knowledge.

Aside from me needing to purchase another fuckoff machine in my collection of gradually increasing pile of techno garbage, I'll literally become the fucking college loser using Linux greentext.

I was hoping that a GODDAMN IT degree would at least have some sufficient fucking Unix comparability of the sorts, or at the very fucking least Linux. You're basically telling everyone with a Macbook (me) to go fuck themselves because running a fucking Virtualbox is definitely not a fucking option. It's not like you can't use Microsoft products on a Macbook, it's got Office, NodeJS, Unix programs and Visual Studio, the fuck else do you need? Specific versions of fucking Microsoft Edge? A highly niche Explorer.exe function? Shitty FTP support? - The only Windows laptop I even have is a shitty Ryzen 3 laptop with 3GB of RAM, I'm fucked, it can't even play HD video without lagging the fuck out.

Using Virt-Manager with kvm/qemu would have lower system requirements then virtualbox, and sounds like you can probably use tiny11 or another tool to shrink Windows to as small as possible.

Do student loans not cover the cost of a laptop for school? Usually that’s covered under school supplies

So was everywhere else. The "expectation" to wear garters and braces was physical necessity, not something imposed by IBM in particular. Even blue collar workers wore them a lot of the time, because there's little worse than a sock slipping down inside your boots. They died off as elasticated socks gained popularity.
Exactly. You don't need them nowadays, with elasticated socks. If you have to wear a shirt tucked into your pants one of those rubber shirt keeper belts does the job nicely with slightly less of a medieval torture vibe.

Tried the rubber belt like ones - they don’t work as well for long shifts. You get used to the medieval torture devices pretty quickly.

What IT course related software that's Windows only do they even require? The only thing I can think of is the full-fat version of Visual Studio, but nothing else really

Windows-specific user administration tech, e.g., Active Directory. It's hard to say without knowing what is in the course.

MacBooks are ARM-based. I think emulating the architecture is much slower than if it were an x86-64 host.

https://dougallj.wordpress.com/2022/11/09/why-is-rosetta-2-fast/ - https://bytecellar.com/2022/11/16/a...ension-to-accommodate-an-intel-8080-artifact/

Apple Silicon has specific extensions to enable more effective x86 emulation than other Arm architectures.
That's talking about Rosetta performance. It does pretty much what most modern console emulators do.

Running an x86 VM is much slower.

Parallels says the same thing in the knowledge base.

I run the Android emulator on x86 (which uses QEMU), and performance is horrific.

My first thought was Respondus Lockdown but that has an ARM Mac version. It's probably some other exam/testing shitware that comes with a textbook license key and gets used for 5 minutes despite costing $100+.

a big issue i want to bring up is if you leave your linux machine on for a week and are using the open nvidia drivers you may run into an issue with memory leaks that will require a reboot to fix.

Just don't leave your computer on for a week
Amateurs.
This one does use Nvidia, but gets rebooted for kernel updates fairly often:
08:14:07 up 25 days, 23:23, 5 users, load average: 1.09, 1.12, 1.10

This one doesn't use an Nvidia card though, and I'm pretty sure that was just the last power outage that lasted longer than the UPS feeding the POE switch:
15:13:34 up 234 days, 19:50, 1 user, load average: 0.31, 0.20, 0.13

I’ll be severely disappointed if my IT college uses fucking OneDrive with fucking Microsoft Accounts. What the fuck am I even going to learn if the shithole can’t even do their own IT infrastructure?

Well, if I were you, I would prepare to be disappointed. Most places you will encounter in the real world will be using the Microsoft suite of tools.

Get used to having to deal with shit like OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams and all sorts of other Microsoft enshittified tools. The only time you will be allowed to run Linux anywhere will be in WSL or a VM, and the only people allowed Macs are the design department (which probably won't exist because Figma / AI design will have replaced all the web designers).

If by some chance this is the same place I went, then it is not only because they do use Outlook & OneDrive as the uni backbone, but also because there is a very specific proprietary package manager (?) UI for "necessary course software", and to access the coursework platform from an app instead of the browser. If your practicals tell you to install Spyder, PSPP and or RStudio, then colleague mine, get ready to slurp the microdick. Nothing a VM can't fix though.
