In IBM, as a man, you were expected to wear a garter under your trousers to pull your socks up tight (I am not joking).

This wasn’t unusual at all. Elastics weren’t commonplace yet and it kept them from sagging. Men still wear a variation that keeps their shirts from coming untucked. It’s very common in military and LEO.

Are you seriously insinuating there was some kind of troon conspiracy at IBM?

No, I am insinuating it was regimented. The story is often used to illustrate it being a regimented organisation with a strict dress code, because who the fuck would check in to an office if your socks had a fucking garter? If someone told me to do that, they would get told where to shove it.

Do you even believe what you're typing anymore? It was the 19x0s. You'd suck a dick to have that job.

Yes. Some people at the time didn't want to work in places like IBM because it was so regimented.

I could have a much higher-paying job working at a big corp near where I live that is very regimented and requires a strict dress code, but I've worked there as a contractor, and I could do it for about a year before I had enough despite the £££s.

Same. You're still talking a lot of shit.

Fuck, I miss Solaris.
Great OS. It's actually why I'm still attached to sysvinit specifically. I had a job once that basically amounted to running a bank of modems for a high school that for some reason had the good taste to choose Solaris. Just with runlevels alone, I could reset an individual modem, the entire bank of modems, or even power cycle everything from home. It took them a couple years to figure out I wasn't doing any actual work because a few scripts could do my monkey job.

I've been reading this thread for a while and I noticed a pattern of a few people who go on about their rather obscure system and how it's perfect and gives them so much control only for weeks or months later they discuss that they had to drop the obscure system because it was too time consuming to fix and keep running.
I've been doing just fine with the same install of Gentoo for over a year now. Everything I've done is relatively set and forget and I'm fairly conservative about what I install, configure, how often I update, so there hasn't been much to talk about.
I've been resisting the urge to remind them that I had recommended Mint to them way back when.
Thanks, but I'm sticking with Gentoo Linux.jpg

Been daily driving Arch for over a year. Did switch my environment from Hyprland to Niri a couple months ago though, and holy shit are scrolling window managers amazing.

So was everywhere else. The "expectation" to wear garters and braces was physical necessity, not something imposed by IBM in particular. Even blue collar workers wore them a lot of the time, because there's little worse than a sock slipping down inside your boots. They died off as elasticated socks gained popularity.

I saw this video thumb today while looking for "Switch To Linux" search results. Isn't the guy claiming to be a woman these days, or am I mixing them up with another overweight Linux user?
Yep, he trooned out but looks and sounds exactly the same.
I wouldn't be surprised if he did it to get his hair back.

I mean, OpenIndiana and SmartOS are still a thing.
