When I say "insubstantial and not possible to comprehend", I'm being literal; the only "justice" that karma is said to import is that which is interpreted in the eyes of mortals.

Take the example of a spider and a butterfly; the butterfly - through no fault of its own, supposedly - gets caught in the spider's web and thrashes about, catching the spider's attention and thusly getting eaten. Is it the spider's "good karma" that lead the butterfly to get in a position to be eaten, or is it the butterfly's "bad karma" that caused it to fly into the spider's web and be eaten?

Now, say someone - a Bodhisattva, for example (not Hindu, but work with me) - comes across the butterfly caught in the web; with the greater understanding of karma that said one possesses, they must give sincere consideration to the matter of karmic balance: is the butterfly deserving of its fate, and would its death at this particular moment in time and space positively or negatively affect whatever circumstance might have happened had the butterfly continued to live--and more specifically, is the butterfly's own karma positively or negatively affected by getting caught in the web in the first place? These are the aspects that must be taken into account when deciding whether to free the butterfly or not--to say nothing of the potential karmic damage caused by interfering with the spider, such as their web being broken, or them suffering harm as a result of not eating that particular butterfly.
