I wouldn't read too much into that. They probably just didn't have work for him. I had thought about doing similar work for a time back when being an onsite tech was still a thing in many places. I knew people who did it and it's 90% sitting on your ass playing solitaire, drinking coffee, getting fat and 5% fixing something when it broke.
