My lil' bro got one for what must have been Xmas '98. IDR them being in short supply tho'. At least not to same extent as Teletubbies the year before, or Toy Story in '95.
I do, I lived in a small city at the time and they were impossible to find except through scalpers. My fifth grade teacher talked to us about how going crazy to get a toy for Christmas (or any time) was stupid and don't do it ever. Most of my classmates would say about how the were for little kids and they were too cool for that sort of thing. In private though many of them (including the most vocal ones against them) confided in me that secretly they wanted one really badly and were disappointed that there was no way they'd get one.

damn, Furbys bring back memories of Nov 1998
At the time, I was working at a retail store. And our retail chain advertised Furbys in their Black Friday add.
And I had to be at work a hour before opening
But, you have to remember, this was when Furbys started showing up in retail, and selling out like crazy
So, when I got to my store, that cold 6am Friday morning, there was a long line for the Furby's
But were sold out without incident, maybe late 90s people were nicer than now
And in all the hype, I did buy one and I kept him, thinking he would be worth more in the following years.
But I was wrong and in the 2000s , gave my Furby away

Moral of the story, sell high.
And the late the 90s were great
Funny, one of the big things talked about in late 98 was the literal fistfights people were having to buy a Furby. They were notorious for this sort of thing. Many of the stories were told to us by the teacher mentioned above, and there was only one that I doubted the truth of.

You should have sold him no later than about a week before Christmas, honestly. Where I lived some scalpers got a hold of at least a few, and put ads in the paper offering to sell them for over $100, and that was in early December. One week until Christmas and you probably could've gotten at least $200 for it.

I'm suprised nobody has posted anything from Reflection Loop's bizarre broken early 2000's webpage.

Even back then they knew these little fuckers were nightmare porn.

Generally the quality of the original product imprints on the quality of the fandom (because with low quality shit you have to patch a lot of the gaps with your own (terrible) ideas) It appears to be the case here too.

Custom furbies remind me of the custom G3 ponies people made/still make. With MLP I can understand customizing plastic horses into something with higher quality parts or into a new mythical creature. Seeing it done with furbies is odd because I thought furbies were reviled? Or seen as just a fad?
Here’s a custom MLP compared to a custom Furby. There seems to be more of a limit to what you can do when it comes to customizing furbies.

Oh hey, I had one of these when I was a kid. Me and my sister eventually stripped the skin and fur from it's bones so we could see what was inside. It just started making gurgling noises after that when we tried to make it speak though, so that was too bad.

Heh....a friend of mine was given one of these for Crimbo and bought it round to "meet the family" when she'd only just got it out of the box and it hadn't learned anything yet.

I spent an hour dropping it upside down into its head, rushing it at high speed into walls and dangling it over the loo whilst I flushed etc. I failed in my primary mission - to make it gibber every time a human came near it - but I did get it to the point it squealed "no no nonononoooo NOOOOO" every time anyone picked it up.

Then she took it off me and refused to let me play with it any more. That was a good Christmas; The Year I Mindfucked The Furby.
