It does fall down into World Building but the general vibe is that most people can't afford/know how to use Materia. Even Shinra's police force (Not SOLDIER, but the regular guys) don't have it - they just have standard Gun/Sword/Grenade loadouts through the entire game and all of the tougher enemies are literally just big robots.

I understand why they de-aged Hope for plot reasons in the third game, but it feels like such a downgrade because Hope in 13-2 is so likable. He's not a snarky, shy vengeful kid like in the first game, he's a well voice-acted and well-written dude trying to keep shit up and running.

Does lightning returns ever actually explain why Hope is suddenly a kid again? I really don’t remember that retarded piece of writing ever being explained.

Yes but like all the writing in Lightning Returns it's explained extremely opaquely, Bhunivelze changes his form back to a teen body as well as screwing with him mentally, and basically sapping him of his memories and his capacity for emotion

Probably a case of “things that work in gameplay don’t work in story.” Fuck, I don’t know.

I believe this was one of the major things lost in translation. See in English the big bad for 13 3 is a generic doomsday bad guy. In Japanese? He wants to bang the shit out of lighting. Although I don't remember if he always felt that way or if hope influenced him. I see why they cut it out but it really makes him unmemorable otherwise.

So he makes Hope a kid again because he’s afraid he’ll bang his pink haired Valkyrie warrior chick? I mean, I knew the reasoning would be retarded, but that’s beyond retardation.
 
I wonder what kind of reaction the devs were expecting to that plot. I guess either "Lightning is the hottest chick in the world, no wonder this guys life mission is to bang her" or "What kind of lame idiot gets this obsessed with one girl?"

I'd put my money on the former.

Could be worse, at least it's not that the people that made the third one are possibly into onee/shota stuff. I hope.

I would agree with you given the director’s apparent infatuation with her. I remember an interview for XIII-3 where he talked about how fans would love the new, ‘more attractive’ Lightning.
 
So, to go way, way back to some of the FFVII story talk ages ago, I just finished Crisis Core Reunion.
So, that scene in Remake where Hojo says Cloud is something more than just SOLDIER? Yep, turns out he directly infused the guy with some of Jenova's cells in Nibelheim for about four years straight. Of course, its been a while and he wouldn't exactly remember what was originally a failed experiment. I didn't know any of that that since I don't think I got far enough in original FFVII and Remake cuts off before any character development or plot dumps happen.
 
Speaking of which, I've heard that in early drafts of VII's story Cloud was supposed to be an actual clone of Sephiroth, modified in certain ways. I don't know exactly how true that is, but it would certainly fit in with the 'twist' about Zack, as well as the other numbered clones that are being drawn to the reunion in the Arctic.
The games in the compilation retconed a bunch of stuff anyway, so who knows what the hell was supposed to be going on before the remake.

And then before that, Cloud lifted Sephiroth by the blade, (with it stabbed right through him) and shoved him off a building
