The more I think about this show the worse it gets...

What was the purpose of them forgetting their names? Why did Caine refuse to tell them, what did he gain out of it? What's in a name? What difference does it make for them to know it, especially since they seem to remember everything else?

Like, this isn't some small plot detail, this is something the show draws attention to multiple times, and it never gets a satisfying explanation.

Because the answer is: Nothing. Nothing would change if Jax were Leroy from the start.

I think I can see the narrative purpose, but it's very much a case of them trying to have their cake and eat it too. They wanted a "memory loss" narrative, but they also wanted a narrative where characters keep secrets from each other.

Nothing makes the memory loss aspect clearer than the social media scene. This would literally only work if they didn't actually remember. The show is trying to do both at the same time, and trying to fool viewers into forgetting that they actually know who they are.

The implied reason at the start of the show was to make the game/experience more immersive or whatever. But yeah this finale really seems to be written for people that only watched video essays and didn't watch the other episodes. Nothing lines up.

EDIT: kinda beat to it, fuck. Still though it bothers me. The internet/brain scan thing being a factor completely omits caine's motivation fromt he entire fucking series becuase it means he could have interacterd with/entertained real humans in the outside world at any fucking time when it clearly was written and implied like he could not do that which is why he was keeping them there and getting increasingly frustrated he couldn't keep them happy enough to stay forever. His meltdown literally makes no fucking sense if he can just connect to the internet and talk to ANYONE, especially REAL HUMANS WHO ARE NOT NPCS I ALREADY SAID THIS EARLIER FUCK
