This is less so with the atypical antipsychotics like olanzapine, but not everyone responds to them. Terry was one of the unfortunate ones where he really couldn't be effectively treated, and where the sledgehammer type antipsychotics just turned him retarded, and he couldn't stand to be turned into a retard.The treatment for severe cases like Terry doesnt makes them better. It makes them manageable by turning off the brain.
A lot of time when schizos stop taking their meds it's because they believe they're being poisoned. This isn't even wrong because they are. The latest gens of antipsychotics are sometimes miraculous, but they don't work for everyone. I know people who have turned from totally nonfunctional to functioning on a professional level, to the point you'd never sus them out as actual schizos.
Maybe he was just born under a bad sign. Who knows? Much of his life seems to have been cursed.
