Best class(es) to play as?

Ok, dumb question, but why are kids still playing TF2? It barely gets any updates, it's not a battle royale nor a sandbox, and yet there are players born after game release. How do they even find about it?
It's fun and also timeless.

A big issue is that a lot of shooters are "very serious" and "e-sports". Ranked modes, toxic teammates, MMR issues (smurfing, throwing), rigidly unfun classes for class games, tons of meta and optimization shit, and so on.

TF2 is drastically simpler in a lot of respects and all of those respects are centered around "fun" as a design choice, which is something that was always missing from Overwatch (and CS:GO, Valorant, DOTA, LoL, PUBG, Fortnite, CoD, Battlefield, etc). Sometimes it's fun to play a game where there's still big spinning med kits floating around the level randomly and where if you die (or god fobid, lose) it's not a big deal and no one cares. The points, the scores, the plays, none of it matters in TF2.

The "Meet the Team" videos still function as fun introductions to classes as well as sneaky tutorials - which is a breath of fresh air from the "THIS IS SERIOUS YOU GUYS" nature of other game's world building. Overwatch has it the worst because they not only try to have a serious world, but fill it with absolute dogshit writing and horrendous characters, but a lot of "newer" games have the same tropes for character designs.

TF2 is old as shit but the "serious shooter" genre is so big and homogenized that TF2 is the only place you can really go for a breath of fresh air.

Yeah I was playing a couple days ago for the first time in a while and I had a lot of fun. Did some payload maps for a bit and then wandered into one of those shitshow custom maps with fast respawn times and low gravity and that was a blast.

Was like playing turkeyburgers back in the day.

TF2 has beeen popular with kids since the game went free-to-play
Kids like first-person shooters and free shit. The latter of which they don't need any money to buy, Which is good for a kid, since kids can't earn any income
Here's the analogy I like to use:

Other FPSes like Overwatch are to Tumblr and Reddit what TF2 is to 4chan or Kiwi Farms. It's a retarded shithole, but that's what makes it fun.

Rather than being a sterilized corporate bubble that permabans you for dropping a Hard R in a moment of frustration, it's a hive of scum and villainy where you may run into Han Solo and Chewy.

TF2, to me, is one of those last remnants of the Old Internet.

I can't believe I'll live to see the day TF2 outlives Overwatch. (It already did, techncially, even if functionally OW2 is just OW1.5.)

Just a funny coincidence that Team Fortress 2 came out the same year as the iPhone. The latter of which commonly being blamed for the end of the old internet.
I honestly don't blame Apple for the creation of the iPhone and the long-time death of the internet, neigh. I only blame the Apple consumers which mostly consist of hipsters, the latter being the more common blame as to why the internet has been garbage these days.

TF2 is probably the most recognizable and influential game on the entire internet when you come to think about it. It's got 16 years worth of content made on YouTube in the form of let's plays, gmod machinimas, SFM movies, various personalities that play the game, and memes. I meet so many people online and IRL that know what TF2 is, but never played because of exposure to seeing gmod videos or memes. Jerma is one of the biggest streamers around and he got his start off as a TF2 YouTuber and much of his growth can be partially attributed to the reputation he had in the community by the time he started putting more focus on streaming other games.

But I'd also say the other big factor is TF2 is free to play. It doesn't require a particularly powerful computer to run it (you could run this game on a 15 year old laptop with respectable frames), nor is it a rather difficult game to play. There's no pay to win mechanics either. Even in its current state post meet your match and a bot crisis, it still has plenty of community servers free of those issues.

While people can argue that Wolfenstein, Doom, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Battlefield and Halo were the touchstones of the FPS genre, TF2 reigns supreme for how it became an influence to video making and shitpost culture on YouTube, even to this day, and games like Overwatch could never ever be on the exact same level.

Objectors... LE BAD????

Apparently because the site is currently fucked, I can't quote @Bardin Goreksson here, so I'll respond with this, this is a pretty decent video I might check out later

This video was pretty bad IMO. Out of all the fucking problems this game faces in 2023, the Conscientious Objector is what's on your mind, really? It comes off to me as someone who's just reaching for any kind of video idea that's remotely different from other "TFtubers".

And as much as he tries to write it off, the point of "it's on parents, not Valve" still stands. No company needs to cater to people who are not their target audience, the devs aren't babysitters. Of course I don't agree with kids seeing disgusting pedo loli furry porn, but as someone who played TF2 when I was somewhat young, and saw disturbing shit, I don't blame Valve at all.

Otherwise, it's almost harmless. If I saw random shit, even the innapropriate stuff in my CO, I'd probably laugh it off. Tempest in a teapot.

Objectors should've just been some kind of text editor. Hardly anyone uses them for their intended purpose, i.e. as a protest sign that the character is implied to have stolen from a disgruntled hippie.
But all-class reskins are also retarded because melee weapons are meant to be part of the class's identity. Demo using a bottle vs pyro using a fire axe vs heavy just using his fists not only tells you something about each class's character, it's also funnier than "HAHA WACKY PAN/HAM/FURRY PORN OBJECTOR" for the hundredth time.

To be fair, when you give players a melee weapon that can have literally any image of their choosing on it, what did you expect would happen?

Yeah that's exactly it, I wouldn't necessarily call it a 'retarded shithole' but it's a rare fun shooter that values comedy, creativity and above all else unfiltered freedom to fuck about in your own vibrant gloriously violent and chaotic cartoon playground with limitless potential for saying and customising whatever you want really. TF2 is a relic of the old internet and video game design that valued innovation and stands out of a sea of serious shooters and sacrifices realism and a gritty war torn worlds for a colourful vibrant shooter with a comic book aesthetic combined with cartoon violence and adult swim style humour and absurdity. TF2 is the pinnacle of pure 'shitposty' fun, which why I think it will remain forever as a bastion in the shooter community of how quality writing and sheer unfiltered mayhem is so important in a modern shooter.

I foresaw anything user created and for the children, but never did I ever think "because I'm afraid of getting banned off twitch" to be a serious argument the fag would make. This shit is why we can't have fun in video games anymore. They want everything sterile because they're afraid their neetbux aren't going to flow in and I wish him a very painful, video game related death. At the very least just getting bullied off the internet.

I really hate the "Think of the children" argument because people will bring it up without a hint of irony while talking about M rated games which children should realistically not be playing in the first place.
Of course they do but are we supposed to remove any feature that puts creative control in the players hands just because there are a lot of bad parents out there?

They already neutered the spray system by having sprays disabled in Valve servers but in 2021 they went a step further and made them disabled by default for everybody on every server and required you to go into the options and change a setting to be able to see them again. I don't think they'll get rid of the Objector but I wouldn't be surprised if they patch the method of adding full colour decals.

Both of the Team Fortress threads have activity, I’m happy.
Do any of you have funny objectors or named weapons?
