It's fun and also timeless.Ok, dumb question, but why are kids still playing TF2? It barely gets any updates, it's not a battle royale nor a sandbox, and yet there are players born after game release. How do they even find about it?
A big issue is that a lot of shooters are "very serious" and "e-sports". Ranked modes, toxic teammates, MMR issues (smurfing, throwing), rigidly unfun classes for class games, tons of meta and optimization shit, and so on.
TF2 is drastically simpler in a lot of respects and all of those respects are centered around "fun" as a design choice, which is something that was always missing from Overwatch (and CS:GO, Valorant, DOTA, LoL, PUBG, Fortnite, CoD, Battlefield, etc). Sometimes it's fun to play a game where there's still big spinning med kits floating around the level randomly and where if you die (or god fobid, lose) it's not a big deal and no one cares. The points, the scores, the plays, none of it matters in TF2.
The "Meet the Team" videos still function as fun introductions to classes as well as sneaky tutorials - which is a breath of fresh air from the "THIS IS SERIOUS YOU GUYS" nature of other game's world building. Overwatch has it the worst because they not only try to have a serious world, but fill it with absolute dogshit writing and horrendous characters, but a lot of "newer" games have the same tropes for character designs.
TF2 is old as shit but the "serious shooter" genre is so big and homogenized that TF2 is the only place you can really go for a breath of fresh air.
