Sword World, an incredibly popular TTRPG in Japan, is getting its first official English translation courtesy of Mugen Gaming. The publisher announced a partnership with Group SNE to produce an official English translation, with a Kickstarter coming in 2026 to produce the Sword World 2.5 Deluxe Rulebook, with additional product to follow.

Mugen Gaming also has a free 60-page one-shot RPG, complete with basic rules, for those who sign up on their English language website.

Sword World is a fantasy RPG with origins tied to D&D. Group SNE started as a gaming group that played Dungeons & Dragons and recorded the events of their game as Record of Lodoss War. After TSR rejected Group SNE's overtures to make an official Record of Lodoss World campaign setting, the group created their own rules system which eventually became Sword World.

The system uses a 2D6 system, where a 12 is an auto-success and a 2 is an automatic failure (but also automatically earns XP). The game is on the crunchier side, with skill checks adding multiple modifiers to determine success and damage rolls coming from a table based on power level and the roll of a 2D6 instead of rolling damage dice.

That’s a bold move by WOTC with the English release of Sword World right around the corner.
Apparently D&D Japan did it themselves and has nothing to do with WotC. Taking a look at their twitter account that's only existed for a couple of years it seems to be focused entirely on promoting the game and community without a single fucking combat wheelchair in sight.

But that's still a hell of a lot more than WotC has been doing. It's like their Japanese division went entirely rogue.

According to Japanese Wikipedia, until 2022 D&D was published in Japan by a local company and the Japanese branch of WotC only started handling it in second half of 2022. The people working on the Japanese version before went over to WotC, so there's staff continuity.
 
I know I’m two days late (I haven’t been on KF for a while, you HOARS), but it irks me that we get this shit while Japan gets actually good art a couple days later.

A good example is how K-pop demon hunters appeal to both women and gays in the West, but Pixar's Elio and MCU's The Marvels do not. Women and male homosexual individuals generally don’t like to watch portrayals of ugly and fat people. Most faggots individuals and women prefer fit Korean boy bands over superhero movies about twinks and ugly dykes. Western animation and Hollywood don’t know how to make movies about beautiful people anymore.

Makes sense, I know about TSR being incredibly dumb with publishing ages ago in Japan to the point where Sword World got created. And the continuity of staff explains why they seem to be doing everything correctly there would explain why everything seems to be getting done right. As opposed to anything managed by WotC for for the past decade.

Sure, but instead of doing basically anything, we get current day WotC screeching about the franchise being "under monetized" meanwhile you've got a fucking cartoon based off of critical role that made an absolute fuckload of money with Hasbro being such a pain in the ass they've made their own game... with Baldur's Gate 3 being a fluke. Kinda like what happened with Sword World and Record of the Lodoss War in the first place. History rhyming and all that.

Yep, and they made their own TTRPGs after the stupid OGL fiasco. The fucking kickstarter alone made damn near 12 million dollars. They've also since released DVD sets because there's enough people still buying shit like that, amazon probably saw a ton of watch time so that's more money compared to their normal insane expenditures for shows. Meanwhile Hasbro made one movie, forgot to spend any money marketing it and then wondered why it flopped.

The second goddamn campaign (Mighty Nein) is getting its own animated series as well.

Having seen large chunks of Vox Machina -- it's not terrible. It's not Tolkien, or even Weis and Hickman, but I'd watch LoVM over Rangs of Powah any day.
 
I first felt that while reading Fabula Ultima; it does have all the elements from old Final Fantasy videogames and is very pretty, but the system by itself seems boring and lacks challenge - it looked like you simply can't lose. It may work for a one-shot or a short campaign, but I highly doubt it can be entertaining for a long time.
I can say just from personal experience this simply isn't true. I ran a weekly Fabula Ultima campaign for about a year and a half that my players really liked. The system goes from Level 5 to 50, we went from level 5 to 40 during that time, so there was even room to keep going had the story merited it. I nearly party-wiped my players in a few boss fights and if they weren't kitted for it, a standard or slightly above average random encounter was a definite threat. I suppose if your expectations for a campaign is like 3 to 5 years, it might not meet that, but 1-2 years is perfect full-blown campaign length for me and mine.
