You know, one of those annoying fads that I associate with 5ed D&D is the "pet adventures" campaign style, where you play as different dog and cat breeds but with the standard classes.

Where did that exactly come from?

I've seen stuff like the Cat D&D shit before, and been aware of Furry D&D/Mouse Guard ripoff but 5e, but never heard of that.

Don't think I've ever seen that in 5e. It's usually it's own thing like Mouse Guard.

As much as I do my best to ensure furries yiff in hell... while I only played a one-shot but Mouse Guard kinda owns.

Fucking Crittercal Role fans trying to roll up freakshit in my Incredible Journey campaign, wtf is wrong with playing a cat or dog instead of having to be a special snowflake?

Didn't call out matt mercer as the problem by name, 5/7.

That sentence made my bones hurt.
Glad to know I wasn't the only one.

There are a billion furry homebrew "conversions" for D&D, but I've never seen any of them gaining even a speck of popularity.

It does, yes. Mostly because it has a theme and it sticks to it. It's not just "animal people" and/or furry bait, it's a whole bespoke thing and it's done well.

I can't believe you didn't go with Matt Meowcer. For fucking shame.

Surprised when hearing about "Pet" DnD that nobody brought up this...

I've never had a problem with anybody playing some weird ass race for their character. They usually do it just so they can make a bunch of jokes and lose interest once they get them out of their system. I haven't had anybody try to work in some weird sex/identity thing, but I also haven't played with many random strangers either mostly just IRL friends.

Playing Starfinder with the bestiary full of stated out classes for a couple of one off sessions where everyone just tried picking the weirdest/grossest monsters was a lot of fun.

Speaking of weirdest/grossest monsters, anyone played a session of this?

Now granted, Fomori games are NOT long term affairs by design. Their lives are nasty brutish and very short. If the werewolves or your teammates don't getcha, the mutations will. Still, if you got people that just wanna play murderhobo edgelords and don't mind being disgusting about it, you can't get better than this.

Any other "encourage the players to be as nasty as they wanna be" games one can recommend?

Beast. Just let them play Beast.

So we went from Pet Adventures to Mind Rape RPG in the space of two posts.

I think my neck hurts from the tone whiplash.

No but it could be fun. It's pretty decent horror that's for sure. You just have to beat it into the players skulls that 'evil horror' doesn't mean lolsorandom silly stupidity. Which ironically means they can't be as nasty as they'd like. I think it'd be difficult to find a group that could pull it off.

The least interesting race added with this has to be Astral Elf. The rest seem like they would be fun to play. Plasmoid looks like the most interesting.
I've been wanting thri-kreen and giff for a while, but the giff are just kinda underwhelming compared to all the shit the other entries have. Plasmoid looks fun for a non-serious game. Astral elf can get stuffed, we don't need any more knife ears (or horn heads). Thri-kreen is never going live as is because you'll have dual-wielders with shields or greatswords with off hand attacks. Hadozee has a lot of support capability with the use an item as a bonus action. Fun UA overall. Too bad anything going live from it that's not an elf is going to be neutered.
