Stockton is an even bigger shithole than Fresno. The entire city has the culture and charm of an AM/PM Mini Mart, and it has worse air quality than LA. It also has a lot of earthquake activity. The unemployment rate is a whopping 7.1%, compared to the state average of 5.4%, and the largest industry there is manufacturing.
The highlights of Stockton are Little Manila, a bargain-basement version of Chinatown except with Filipinos, and the Stockton Arena, which is their local large entertainment venue.
The most notable thing about Stockton is their absolutely insane crime rate; in 2024, they had 16.6 murders per 100,000 citizens, or approximately 54 in a population of 324,000. What's really notable about this is that Stockton is not a tourist area with a lot of outsiders or transient populations or "urban centers" like LA, San Francisco, or New York; these are home-grown crimes, resident vs. resident. The rate of sexual assault is even more alarming: 130 per 100,000 in 2024, or approximately 423. The final numbers for 2025 are not yet in, but nobody really expects them to improve over 2024. Stockton appears on many negative Top-100 lists due to their outrageous crime statistics, and they employ about half of the police officers that other cities in California do (1.2 per thousand vs. 2.27 per thousand, CA state average). This is what happens when you defund the police, or more likely, never funded them in the first place.
I have been to Stockton. The city is full of beige strip malls and beige air. It's the kind of place that you pass through on your way to Sacramento or San Francisco to the north, or Bakersfield or LA to the south. As you approach the outskirts, your desire to lay on the gas and get the fuck out of there increases each mile. Residents of Stockton fancy themselves as better than the more rural areas of Bakersfield and Fresno to the south, but really, it's all the same old shit, just a few miles farther up the road. Bakersfield has a thriving industry in oil and gas, agriculture, and shipping, so at least there are jobs. Fresno is still close enough to commute to Bakersfield to work. Otherwise, the whole area is really nothing to write home about.
