Josh's encounter with a BPD psychopath greatly accelerated the ending. He was weird and lonely and wanted human comforts, and he got the Bogwitch. That in itself nearly killed him as she goaded him while he had a shotgun to his jaw. Josh couldn't fight off predators, he was weird and mentally ill, but he wasn't a bad person and mostly wanted to live and let live.

Walking 90 minutes per day in the sun, stop drinking, working out will fix most of his issues, and then he can workout why he thinks his father is disappointed in him and work that issue out.
