This is the first time I've heard of it, and I think my brain blew a fuse trying to process what the hell is even going on.
Is that motherfucking Danny DeVito in a wrestling leotard up in that first screenshot?
Yes, but that is just part of an art exhibit painting Always Sunny as a beat'em'up and it made me think of Slaps and Beans which is an actual game in the same style going through their movies.

I am 95% sure SOR2 was my first videogame, my parents used to play through it co-op, also Dragon's Crown is basically a beat em up with light RPG elements, and Charlie Murder is another one I enjoy give it a try if you can stomach its art style

A lot of people were treating as SoR 5, but Sega constantly advertised these games as "reboots/remakes", the Revolution might be an indication of that. Weird how they already showed the main trio for Golden Axe but here they are sticking with only Axel for now.

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
I ought to play this one
Battle Circuit
Oh I remember this one. It was pretty good!

Anyway the reason why I wanted to necro this thread:

I got my hands on SOR 4 the other day and I enjoyed it wholesale. It's pretty fun. I will admit that the lack of a dash or a roll for most characters kinda trip me up.

I habebthaven't played the other games, but I think the dash or roll was something in SOR 3!

Curious: Should I settle for the originals or Remake?

Nice. Be sure to get the DLC for SOR 4. It's highly recommended.

I have an unpopular opinion in that my favorite of the OG games is SOR 3. BUT, cannot emphasize this enough, BUT only play the Jap version. There's more than just censorship differences between the two versions. Not only can you not play as the gay biker (Ash) but you can't play as Shiva either. In addition, the gameplay just feels 'off' in comparison to the Jap version. It feels slower and you issue less damage. The special move works differently between the versions: in the Jap version, the move will do a ton of damage if you let the meter charge and all that but if you use the special move when the meter is not charged you lose a significant portion of health which is a good for balance; but in the American version the special move seems to do less damage and if you use it when the meter is not full you barely lose any health so you can just spam it but on the flip side it just does dramatically less damage.

That's about it. Stick with the Jap rom of SOR 3. SOR 3 also has dashes and rolls too which is a big reason why I like the gameplay more. The music is good in 3 but there's one awful track during a night club stage. Plus it has 2 different endings with 2 entirely different final levels and bosses. 3 also has hidden special moves that you can do if you're using a 6 button controller which makes the 6 button configuration the best way to play it because you also have a dedicated bitch slap button to hit enemies behind you.

Plus you can play as a god damn kangaroo in 3. Come on. It's the best game.

SOR remake is the GOAT. I think the remake is even better than SOR 4.

SOR 2 is fantastic. To many it is the best game and I see their reasoning but the gameplay is slower and there's no dashing or rolling. It does have the best soundtrack of the franchise. People rant and rave over the OST for 2 because it was something we hadn't really heard before in video game soundtracks: something that sounded like authentic club music. The soundtrack still holds up today. BTW there's a special move input for 2 a lot of new players overlook: if you do an SRK input like in fighting games (Hit toward, down, toward and then attack) you do a special move. Knowing about that special move and being able to consistently do it will dramatically make your life easier.

SOR 1 is okay. A fine beat 'em up but primitive compared to the sequels.

The music is also better. I am far more familiar with the OST for the original three games than their gameplay and ngl, the original music was far better than in SOR4 despite having composers from the old games.

I really dig the stage one theme in SOR4 because it sounds like classic SOR. Right up there with Dreamer and Go Straight.

Nothing sounds like it except the boss themes for the Y twins but that's because they were remixes of Mr. X's theme.

That said, I do have a tiny soft spot for the Chinatown stage themes....some of them.

(actual) Respectful disagree, I think SOR4 is on par with the older soundtracks, but I'm old enough to remember people looking down on SOR3's soundtrack for being more "experimental" versus 2's. Definitely agree with Stage 1's theme. Max's boss theme and the Extras menu tracks could also fit right in with the older ones as well IMO.

SOR4 will forever amaze me. It captured the aesthetic of SOR perfectly... that 80s/90s, sorta cyberpunk, sorta neon noir and updated it appropriately with the slight tech upgrades - think the hexagonal windows or police shields being energy-based - but still obviously otherwise what I just said. It took in enough nostalgia without overly relying on it. And of course the gameplay is fan-fucking-tastic. Never did I think a beat 'em up revival would happen but it did and amazingly so. This and TMNT Shredder's Revenge makes me happy the 90s nostalgia is kicking in and in a quality way so far.

Now Capcom just needs to make Final Fight 4 and with myself leading the cast, of course...

Notice I said "Main character" because reading is important.

But seriously, it would not surprise me if Capcom made Poison front and center and retconned the character into being a babyface.
When you look into the lore they've actually given the impression a lot of the Mad Gear members outside one or two are less "evil" or even "bad guys", as much as people needing support or whatever and moved on once they took their (righteous) ass-beating in the FF series:

-Hugo became a rasslin' star.
-Poison is his manager and even in SFV has a friendly spar with me in her storyline (I let her win that).
-Abigail's just trying to run his business with Axl and Roxy.
-Sodom started to remake the Mad Gear in Revenge, failed to recruit Honda in Alpha 2 but nabbed Rolento on-screen and presumably Retu off it, his Neo Mad Gear in FF2 got crushed but he....
-...joined Rolento's dream to make a militaristic but utopian nation in Alpha 3, and Rolento wants everyone in his fantasy land to be happy if disciplined.
-Damnd just fucked off to the Caribbean for a while and as of SF6 came back to lead a biker club named after the gang.

I doubt for the sake of FF proper we'd ever see Poison be a full-on good guy as the usual playable characters are, but I absolutely see her no longer being on the bad guy side of things in current lore progression.

CAPCOM: What? re-release Final Fight: Streetwise with minimal to-no upgrades? Sure!
Hey I like my bro Kyle! And glad to see them try to expand more on our fair city and all who inhabit it, but.... yeah.

Hey I really did like a lot of the setting elements and characters, it's just the gameplay was total ass. Import said characters and locales into a better actual game, Capcom.

As much of a joke as it was, a remake of Beatdown: Fists of Vengeance might not be so bad. Yeah, current Capcom probably would bungle it badly, but maybe in a better time it would be good.

but I'm old enough to remember people looking down on SOR3's
Sir, you are everywhere. Say, how's Jessica?

Kidding aside, really? I liked SOR3's OST. Espeically The Poets I and II. Especially I. It's right up there with Under Logic and Wave 131 as my faves.

The first game also got some bangers if you ask me but then again I got weird tastes in video game music.

So don't ask me.

Oh gameplay-wise, the game is fantastic! It just takes some getting used to but I could easily sink a few hours into it. Adam is my absolute fave to use. Plus he got some pretty cool alternative colors.

It's really good! And it looks fantastic. The characters got great designs too. Cherry is adorable and it's always fun to smash people's head in with a guitar.

The Y twins look very anime ngl but it actually works.

Hopefully, you remember to give Maki a call. Can't believe Capcom has been neglecting her just because Guy didn't stick his dick in her or something.

But won't this bring troubles to your career as a mayor?
