Streets of Rage franchise is the perfect example of video game art done right

I completely agree with the above statement.

You rang?

Denjin Makai 2. Everybody sleeps on that game but I'd put it on par with Battle Circuit. Banpresto knew how to make a good brawler.

I love Streets of Rage 2 and 3. Yes, 3 just avoid the American version that changes more than just censoring the sprites and removing the gay biker boss. 4 was very good, more so after the DLC. Hope we get a 5 but I'm just glad we got a 4. I think the best is Streets of Rage Remake because it takes everything that worked in the trilogy and expands upon it.

When it comes to Beat 'em Ups I have to confess that Capcom made the absolute best ones and all of them are licensed.

IMHO the best Beat 'em Up ever made is right here:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=S5x9qDqfWWE
And then there's The Punisher.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=8rQwzq7j7vU
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=5i1pca5aCms
The much more obscure Battle Circuit.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=NpmVTWn14Tc
And that's not even mentioning Final Fight or the Dungeons and Dragons games. Capcom just dominated this genre at it's peak even the lesser ones like Captain Commando and Knights of the Round are still good albeit more generic while not innovating much.

But there's one offs that are great like Vendetta by Konami (again, check out the Jap version):

https://youtube.com/watch?v=JZw1VBdfzec
And Night Slashers which is a MUST if you're into horror:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=h-Ys_ufBGAY
Then there's Violent Storm and I mention that one because aesthetically it came the closest to resembling a Saturday Morning Cartoon. That and Boogerman and Earthworm Jim 1 and 2.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=GzPTDyKR9A4
Not to mention all of the TMNT games Konami put out. The X-Men Arcade game is fine albeit mindless. The Simpsons Arcade game is great too.
Nice to see Night Slashers getting some recognition. It's pretty good, but it's one of those games that would definitely benefit from a remake. Though there is the OpenBoR version, Night Slashers X.

You left out Warriors of Fate and King of Dragons. A re-release of Battle Circuit would be dynamite, but we all know Capcom wouldn't waste money on things not Street Fighter.

I've always had a soft spot for the SNES version of The Ninja Warriors and the remake that came out on Switch a few years back. It doesn't use the z-axis, which I love because I'm trash at lining up my attacks properly, and its super attack mechanic was at least something other than "burn health": your screen-wipe attack slowly charges over time, but if you get knocked down while it's not full, it empties out. You have attacks that can use a portion of the bar if you're willing to play a little risky for more damage, and in the remake you can use them without the bar needing to fill up the whole way.
Also, the remake put in two new characters. One of them is, by all rights, a boss character, and it's fucking amazing:

The soundtrack isn't anything super special, but I'm fond of a good bit of it and still get it stuck in my head every so often.

Raiden, FUCK YEA. Man he's so cathartic to play with.

Except for that last stage. Then it becomes a straight hell on earth...

That looks awesome...never saw that before! Really cool.

As a quick addition and thought after playing some Streets of Rage 4 this morning I think I would enjoy it a lot more if all the characters could dash. At first I thought nobody could dash but apparently some of the unlockable characters can? I dunno I always play Blaze, and she can't dash! I think actually none of the base characters can dash. Why on earth they did not think SOR fans would wanna be able to dash when it is one of the more fun mechanics of a beat-em-up I will never know...the game would be so much more enjoyable if it was just a little more fast paced.

My biggest gripe with that aspect of it is this: Hotline Miami came out a full EIGHT YEARS before SOR4. What was it that made that game so addictive? The fast-paced nature and the fact that the music pushed you along the stage. The guys who did SOR4 could have easily done this exact thing. Why do I mention HL Miami? Well, a lot of the music in SOR4 gets bumpin in some places and makes you WANT to push along and keep tempo and just get into that groove...but with how slow the combat is it won't let you. Making this even worse, a lot of the enemies have turtle-ish defensive abilities/attributes too that just completely put the brakes on for you. I see this as a missed opportunity, myself. Such an easy tweak might have turned the game from a cool and kinda fun nostalgic affair into something I was drawn back to time and time again. Mother Russia Bleeds did just that several years before SOR4 and it is certainly addictive once you master its strange mechanics.

I had more trouble getting to the last stage with Raiden than beating the boss. Not that it's a cakewalk or anything, but if you get it just right you can get two hits in with his throw and shave a lot more of the boss's health that way. Jubei still whips my ass six ways from Sunday no matter who I'm playing. That's the price for having cool boss music, I guess.
Yaksha is harder for me overall, since she's a technical character and I'm just bad at that. I think it took me longer to beat the last boss with her than with Raiden due to messing up the positioning of her throws constantly.

IIRC, SoR2 Skate, the SoR3 cast, Cherry, Shiva and SoR2&4 Max (technically) can dash, so anybody who could before still can. As to why others can't, it's because they couldn't in the previous installments. Yes, that's dumb, but it's also likely the reason. Oh, and to preserve the feel of the previous games.

I'm just happy that Axel got buffed, that guy needed some love.

That makes sense...I remember being able to dash with everyone in SOR3 but I thought you could for sure in the other games too...maybe my new memories of SORR are corrupting my old ones. Dashing is something I really just need to have for my own personal tastes in a beat em up.

I have heard a few people mention that game, I heard it was really intense. Should check out videos of it tonight

Batman Returns for the SNES is one of my favorite brawlers. The graphics are beautiful, and the Konami remixes of Elfman tunes were great. I was such a little weirdo, I'd just sit and listen to the jukebox mode when I was a kid. What was really great were the stage interactions though. You could toss enemies through fences, windows, street signs and benches, among other things.

A beat'em'up I never see mentioned(and I haven't actually played it) is Slaps and Beans, the Terrence Hill/Bud Spencer game that came out a couple of years ago. What a weird thing to make. It's got a "very positive" rating on Steam and it looks like a sequel is coming out and being a fan of the Hill/Spencer movies it looks interesting.

This is the first time I've heard of it, and I think my brain blew a fuse trying to process what the hell is even going on.
Is that motherfucking Danny DeVito in a wrestling leotard up in that first screenshot?

I like the Ninja Warriors remake and Fight 'n' Rage better than SoR4 tbqh.

Fight 'n' Rage really has everything. Anybody miffed that SoR4 won't let them vertical dash or run or whatever should try Fight 'n' Rage. The dev obviously loves the genre and apparently tried to throw in every mechanic he ever liked from any game he ever played, down to SNK short hops and Third Strike parries.
