Back on release, I actually really wanted to like it too, and now that I the last few days tried it out again, not only is everything bad still there (as expected) but it’s also crashing from time to time, which I’ve seen others talk about. I can’t remember the last time I crashed in a supposedly high quality game like that.
Same. I wanted a grounded sci-fi RPG but sadly it was another Emil shit show worse than Fallout 4. I stopped hoping for the game to get good once I finished the story the first time.
When I finished the DLC last month* I still had issues with infinite loading screens but it's probably from a mod, I also got the blank menu half of the time unless I used the tab key.

*I could have finished it a couple of months earlier but the main quest of the DLC was bugged. I think it took them 2 months to patch it.
I found myself when playing being surprised it an NPC didn’t come off as a total fag or bore.
Yeah, a 50-50 chance of the NPC being voiced by an Indian or a black woman.

Going back to the game also reminded me that they launched without having a vehicle available to traverse the fairly vast, often boring planets with, lol. Took them about a year to add.
I remember when they said that they planned it to be released with the Shattered Space DLC but if you have played it you can see that the planet they built for the DLC wasn't made with a vehicle in mind. It's clear that they rushed to add a vehicle in the game because it handles like crap. You can travel faster without it, just run and jump boost with your jetpack.

bröthērs. I might have the tism

can anyone recommend some good compact living space mods? most of the shit people build insists on being fucking Xanadu and all I want is a nice future-hygge cube with some infinite storage and consolidated crafting stations. static decor would be good too

I would recommend literally any other Bethesda game.

Oblivion
Fallout 3
Skyrim
Fallout 4 (if you have to)

Hell if you want open world space autism specifically No Man's Sky is actually pretty great now and its creator actually cares about it unlike Saarfield.

Played them all, beat them all, fully completed them all. this is not bragging, this is an admission of guilt

No Man's Sky
Isn’t that just space Minecraft tho? I don’t wanna build shit, I just want to be a pirate cunt with a cozy place to store all my ill-gotten gains

It used to be but after half a decade of updates it actually has decent combat, worldbuilding, and a fairly expansive single player campaign.

It goes on sale for dirt cheap pretty much every Steam sale too so I would actually recommend trying it.

furnish your fleet for more decor items, they recommend Better Buildable Walls and Doors and infinite ship storage, if you don't like the experimental factor of it you can pick one that increases ship cargo hold by X3 or X10 instead, for functions you can test with Betamax's Functional Decor

Also get the StarUI mod to make the UI actually useful.
and search on Nexus for mods that start with "feminine" or "thicc" for space suits that look normal on women. Thicc Sarah makes her way more tolerable.
slopfield engine fixes also fix a lot of things, pun intended, i managed to make npc's lose that weird fluoride stare with that mod.

Thicc Sarah makes her way more tolerable.
The companion that the Everbright creation adds is actually tolerable. Shes typical Quirky Girl with the volume and intensity turned down and she’s a wicked good pilot so she’s my wing belle

The Creations have been the most impressive shit about this game, giving shit like fleet control, orbital strikes/drops and better designs on gear basically all around. I can’t believe that a hover/flying vehicle had to be something players had to come up with. Bethesda keeping its tradition alive of having a community more talented and imaginative than them

i mean the entirety of saarfield is based off people making mods to sell, it's basically minecraft bedrock with how barebones everything is but you can mod something using whatever barebones shit they used as a foundation hint hint nudge nudge.
and i hate it because they will pull this shit for TES6/FO5.

I've started playing it. I touched a weird rock with my laser and am now The Special, which means that after a minimal of exposition I am handed a ship and a robot.

After landing in new Atlantis I agreed to get coffee for a cleaning lady, then wondered why there aren't robot cleaners in 2100s space colonies and then retrieved bio-data thingies for a brown scientist so that he could deduce that the trees are screaming.

While I was doing this I came across an old couple sitting on the ground talking about their dead daughter and a chubby, vacant-eyed NPC walked into them and couldn't muster the will or intelligence to recalculate his path and move around them. So I left him there, eternally walk-cycling into a grieving father's leg while he stared at me.

On the topic of NPCs and their appearances they are so, so horrifically dysgenic, their empty eyes scrutinising me as I pass them; This could easily be a sci-fi horror where you must blend in with an alien species and maintain normalcy by not staring too long at their disgusting visages, like a swapped around version of They Live with no glasses. My character is also disgusting - I scrolled through the presets and settled with a squash-shaped Scandinavian fellow, who I then fattened up slightly and transitioned to "body type 2" with a floppy mop of dark hair. How the fuck - WHY the fuck, have they watered down character creation this much in a roleplaying game?

While I don’t think you’re wrong, that just seems like such a wild decision to pin on what’s both a new IP and also a game that I swear to God has so little to offer if you’re not the right kind of exceptional to enjoy long-term the handful of gameplay loops it offers. The story and the companions are all so beige (at best) and the dialogue is so clearly an afterthought that I almost think another sub genre needs to be created for this kind of game. Because it’s not an RPG, it’s something less than that. It feels like it has the same problem Star Wars Outlaws has, where the game was marketed as having a far greater potential for skullduggery than was present in the finished product., which is something that’s been on the decline in FO and ES as a more longitudinal view.

I don’t require the ability to play a psychopath who thinks money is grand and viscera is funny if the narrative is otherwise good, because then I want to go along with it. When the narrative loses me then my ODD activates and I start pushing boundaries because in-game reactions to such activities can be funny and Starfield has very little of that.

I imagine if there was another game strictly about space smuggling and the lonely isolation of waking LS travel interspersed with life-and-death ship combat then I’d likely be sinking all my time into that

This could easily be a sci-fi horror where you must blend in with an alien species and maintain normalcy by not staring too long at their disgusting visages
Especially appropriate because the quests you describe take place on the Star Trek/Mass Effect inspired settlement where a thinly-veiled purported utopia rotting just below the surface would be perfect

Nope, MAST is totes fine, nothing bad has ever come out of allowing eggheads, generals and bureaucrats to run fucking everything

i don't know the why either, i speak from a creation kit standpoint, you can customize fucking POI's to generate per planet, not to mention customize/add starsystems too.

however i do find extremely funny that youtubers link the fact that bethesda banked on procgen again since daggerfall and got canned for it with saarfield being mid as shit, there is stuff that works here and there but there is stuff that becomes a glaring issue or downright boring that you will either mod out or avoid.

I genuinely have no fucking idea what happened with the npcs.

It's not like Fallout 4's npc templates or models were full of supermodels or anything but they looked way way better than this and it would have been trivial just to port them over.

Don't forget the weird NPC interaction where a security officer (a black woman with vitiligo) was telling a kid that she was assigning him to a foster family because he showed up on New Atlantis alone. She even implies that his parents died. Turns out it was bullshit and if you walk around New Atlantis later you encounter the kid again this time with his real parents. The reason he was alone was because his parents were on another ship.

his parents were on another ship
Which is precisely what he insists happened during the initial scene. I liked that. Having the kid get crushed would’ve been the obvious move and they didn’t take it.

Far Harbor in Fallout 4 was Bethesda's last gasp in competent storytelling and decent writing
William Shen is the guy who did 'The Last Voyage of the U.S.S. Constitution', the only quest in the base game where you have skill checks. He was the one responsible for The Far Harbor DLC too.

In a fair world, the only person who gave a fuck during Fallout 4's development would be the Lead Writer/Designer of Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Instead, Shen quit the company during the development of Starfield; when he, a creative, was relegated to bureaucratic paper work.

He had a GDC presentation that is really illuminating:

And that's the duality of the Bethesda devs that quit on their own vs the theater kids that Asha Sharma laid off. The damage has already been done since the 15 layers of management drove off the few people that still gave a fuck. Can they recover from it at this point? I highly doubt it.

At this point I've just started to believe that nobody gave a shit about anything.

I feel like every time I see a former Bethesda dev do an interview now, it comes out that nobody wanted to work on Starfield except for Todd and maybe Emil. But even Emil I'm starting to question.

So probably like everything in this game, NPC's were probably being worked on by people with zero passion, be it developers that wanted to work on Elder Scrolls/Fallout or a bunch of Pajeets who are just there for the money.
