Problem is: books aren't canon, only what you see onscreen is.
Not sure what kind of excuse they will come up with, but I'm sure it's going to be something stupid.

I disagree. They're poor compared to what came after and it took time to get out of the TOS-style mindset, but it still had an interesting mood to it enhanced by a very 80s spacey and mysterious soundtrack (iirc Berman sacked the guy making the music which is why that goes missing later on). And compared to something like STD, we still had episode after episode where the characters were given time in the spotlight (never mind if the storyline in said episodes was strong or not) - Troi's relationship with her mother + a look into Betazoid society, Wesley trying to get into Starfleet Academy + a look into the process, Data's past and why he was built + what does being an Android mean in Trek's society, Worf's relationship with his heritage + how someone not raised in a primarily Klingon society deals with that culture and so on. I'd say that's already an improvement over TOS, where Sulu, Uhura and Chekov (his Russianness aside) didn't get a single episode centered around them and had to wait until the movies to have something to work with.

Roddenberry was still a hack and most of the good things in these two seasons (and in TOS as well, if we're being honest here) were not his doing, but people still tried to work around his bullshit.

Yeah S1 and S2 make for better viewing when you're more familiar with the behind-the-scenes stuff, like I enjoy looking at Data's Zany Human Shit bits with an eye to "does this make more sense as a bit they thought of for Xon".
 
How would you have done season 2 STD kiwis? I'd go full TOS with a new planet/anamoly every episode. Shows nowadays outside of comedy are too serialized.

It seems like they want a serious plot arc, but wacky science bitches BBT comedy also.

Firing Gates McFadden was a mistake. Never bothering to make her an actual character was also a mistake. She's a boring doctor who never shines on screen and her chemistry with Picard and her own son is mostly garbage. Pulaski at least had identifiable character traits outside of her work. Crusher is a doctor who gets very horny a lot (like most of the cast, especially in earlier seasons). The only thing she had over Troi is she's at least fucking useful on the ship. Troi isn't even actually a qualified counselor. That episode when she loses her powers actually proves that she's completely incompetent. They actually should have just booted Troi from the series at that episode and made Guinan counselor.
Watching through Season 1 of TNG with a friend while finishing my own rewatch at late Season 6 is making me super assmad at the early quality of the show

I think it could be nice to have a quieter series with an All Good Things aged Picard and Q catching up with characters and seeing how the timeline changed as a result. That would be an actual decent conclusion to TNG.

I'm thrilled that Nemesis will no longer be this character's curtain call, but baffled that this is being held hostage by CBS All Access

If they fuck this up, its going to make me much more assmad than STD ever could. I hope Jonathan Frakes comes back and they make him get in shape like Hamill, would be really nice to see Riker and Titan. Fuck if this is good, I'd like to see a little DS9 continuation miniseries where Sisko stops abandoning his family and we see how the characters are doing down the line. I'm a little bit excited and very wary of all this shit.
